Friday Update: Jedi Knight Progression Video

Today's Friday update is all about Jedi Character Progression, as it details both skills and gear in a video. The trailer demonstrates how both the Jedi Knight's Advanced Classes perform, and we get a good look at single saber Guardian moves and double-saber Sentinel action.

The Dev Tracker post and a small working dissection is available after the jump. We say small because Sado is busy at Miami's Ultra seeing some kind of dead mouse perform (we're all jealous), and he'll yell at us for whatever we point out when he gets back.

As you progress in Star Wars: The Old Republic, your character grows more powerful, gains experience, discovers new skills, and acquires more advanced gear.

In this video, you'll get a sneak peek at how the Jedi Knight can evolve in The Old Republic. This is just a small sampling of the armors and skills available, but we hope this gives you a taste of how the Jedi Knight will look as he develops through the course of the game.

I get the conquering part the only problem i would have is how would you get your first one.... Would you kill a sith warrior with a viroblade and just take it off his body? that also brings up a good question on loot as well.... Maybe its more of a proving thing your master will give you your first one only when you can best him in some way... and then ur charged with taking one from a jedi? So many story angles i bet bioware had a field day with this concept.

This is incorrect, it is anything but arbitrary for the Sith. They do construct their own lightsaber, if you read "Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter" they give some insight into how much the Sith pour over their work and how intensely they envelop themselves in the force while creating their own lightsaber, it's also a cool little read into the intensity that is creating a lightsaber in the first place.

Sith do take the process of creating a lightsaber very seriously... think of it this way, if all the lightsabers the Sith had were just handed down to them, how would there be enough lightsabers for everyone? Especially in the era of the Old Republic, one sith doesn't die every time an acolyte earns the mantle...

yeah, again I think of the two sides of the same coin... yin/yang. I see nothing that leads me to believe that sith are mindless brutes that just like to kill. They believe in power and control. But they are still in tune with the force. Thus, they are able to appreciate the finer things in life, plan out strategic assaults while considering all variables. This leads me to believe that they are capable of putting powerful passion and emotion into the creation of their lightsabers. also, luke got a hand me down to start off with before he built one.

I think its fairly arbitrary to be honest. in the bane books, bane is given his first saber, if I remember correctly, by one of his masters on Korriban. I can't think of another book/comic book etc which actually covers Sith training that in depth, and could shed more light onto this topic. I would imagine its more about obtaining a saber through any means possible, rather than a ritualistic right of passage.

I'm inclined to agree with that sentiment.

I may have to agree with you as well. In both versions of SW: TCW, both the 5min. shorts, and now The Cartoon Network version showed Dooku giving Ventress her twin curved-hilt sabers. He also gave Savage Opress his double-bladed saber in TCW.

I could see the Sith having a similar "rite of passage" feel to it. They respect power, after all, and demonstrating your ability to construct a lightsaber is a sign of your power. In Return of the Jedi, both Vader and the Emperor recognize that Luke has become a Jedi (or at least far more powerful) now that he has built his own saber. While Vader has Jedi experience, Palpatine is pure Sith and would only be impressed by something he felt was indicative of a powerful warrior.

While the Sith may not see it as a spiritual experience, the creation of a weapon is important to any culture that values strength and power. I hope that the Sith get an equally impressive moment when their first saber is constructed, and not merely loot it off a corpse. Unless you're taking it from the corpse of your old master, then that might be worthy. :)

From reading the first few chapters of deceived, I get this feeling that sith are sort of akin to samurai. they are all about the control and center of being, but the purpose is still war. so samurai minus the bushido and the tranquility.

Love the changes to the saber hilt inbetween 1:10 and 1:12. The armour looks great as well.

    A few things of note:

    1) Image 5. The Black Sun symbol is also on the Jedi's opponent's shoulder plate at the very left of the image in addition to it being graffitied on the walls which was already noted.

    2) Around 1:20 in the video. You can clearly see the blue crystal at the bottom of the Jedi's lightsaber, again showing that crystal colors determine the blade color.

    3) Around 0:45, (if you can get it to the exact, perfect frame) you can see that all of the enemy NPC faces are very different from each other. One has a black beard, the other is black with orange hair, and one has redish hair. This just points out that humanoid NPCs will actually have varied features as opposed to one or two specific models repeated. Awesome compared to other MMOs.

Georg reconfirmed on the forums that there are color crystals in lightsabers. In fact he confirmed sentinels/marauders can have two sabers of different colors.

Around 0:47, the thugs getting owned also appear to have the Black Sun symbol on them. In that same frame, there's what appears to be a blinking box (possible quest objective or lootable container?). Think there was another behind the thugs too. Also, underbelly? :P more like underworld?

Im an Empire player at heart but it just goes to show how cool the classes are when I see this video and go wow the jedi class looks badass.... I just hope they dont mirror combat styles of jedi and sith... with only 8 classes they should be able to keep them pretty unique right?
