PC Gamer UK Reveals Cyborg Playable Species

Update: It appears the list PC Gamer UK saw in the latest build is inaccurate.

Hey Folks,

The species/class combo list you're referencing is not accurate. If it does appear in the magazine, that's unfortunate.

My guess is that an enthusiastic member of the press wrote down everything he saw in the character creation screen which, as we've stated often, is nowhere near final. Occasionally we'll have species in odd classes or in all classes because of a bug or testing.

Hope that helps!

Daniel

As with any game in development, everything in any current or past build is subject to change. It is important to note that no species/class combination is final until BioWare announces it. Thanks to Gerbo and Meglivorn for pointing out Daniel Erickson's comment in the Dev Tracker.
PC Gamer UK magazine released what they claim to be an entire list of species and compatible classes in the the latest build of Star Wars: The Old Republic in their May 2011 issue. What appears to be a humanoid wearing a face implant is referred to as a Cyborg, and according to the chart, Cyborgs can be Troopers, Smugglers, Imperial Agents, Sith Warriors and Bounty Hunters.

An entire rundown of species/class combinations are as follows:

Humans: Can play every class.
Zabraks: Can Play every class.
Miraluka: Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular
Pureblood: Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor
Chiss: Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter
Rattataki: Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter, Sith Inquisitor
Mirialan: Trooper, Smuggler, Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular
Twi'lek: Sith Inquisitor, Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler
Cyborg: Trooper, Smuggler, Imperial Agent, Sith Warrior, Bounty Hunter

It also makes more sense now thanks to an old Daniel Erickson post:

Hey folks,

Just to clear up any confusion. Implants in SWTOR, much like in KOTOR, are not visible and can be changed out. They are a way to give more loot and stat options to characters without covering them in random art pieces. Except for the flavor name given to them, they function the same as rings or amulets might in a fantasy game.

They are not the same as the visible cybernetics you're occasionally seeing on player characters. Being a cyborg is different and a very specific choice that, as posters have pointed out, is not undertaken lightly nor commonly done in the SW universe.

Hope that helps!

Daniel

More is covered in the issue, so be sure to pick it up. Hat tip to Shrivenx on the heads up.

    this is a very poor set of species choices. not everyone wants to be a human. i for one want to be a Nautolan and i look forward to them making that addition for release.

    I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this list won't change before launch. This seems like a strategic, official reveal held out for a magazine deal for them to give so much detail. Well, let me be more specific: a few of these may shift around or get shared by other classes, but no additional races will make the list.

    I think it is a little strange for some of the more popular races not to make it in at launch, but they do need appealing races for future xpacs IMO, as others have mentioned.

    I'm also going to go out a little further on this limb and say that I think this game would still be wildly popular even if they had said from day 1 that Humans would be the only option. KOTOR only gave 1 option. Of course, that leaves the canon less confusing when defining Revan's race/gender, but still... I never heard any complaints about race choices.

    Sure, MMOs have developed a certain expectation by now, and SWG leaves more unrealistic expectations for some, but honestly BioWare is being pretty selective about their features. MMO staples aren't being added just for the sake of adding them. Point being: be glad you have any choice at all ;)

    "I never heard any complaints about race choices"

    Every day species threads pop up in the general forums, but the mods shoot them down extremely fast. Faster than "release date" threads. Wonder why. :)

    He was talking about KotOR... not SW:TOR... read his post again a bit more carefully...

    Right, I was mistaken. :/

    -- Cross Faction
    Human, Zabrak = 8 Classes
    Cyborg = 5 Classes
    Twi'lek = 4 Classes
    -- Republic Only
    Mirialan = 4 Classes
    Miraluka = 2 Classes
    -- Sith Other
    Rattataki = 3 Classes
    Pureblood, Chiss = 2 Classes

    So I wonder if this will forecast the population sizes of each species. Perhaps not many Miraluka, Pureblood, or Chiss wandering around.

    I find it difficult to believe there are no Cathar, considering we've seen them in media. It makes me question the source.

    You question the magazine pictured in the link? That's a million-dollar fake if it is. Not to mention the post hasn't been locked on the official forums.

    If nothing else, trust DH not to go around linking unfounded claims :P
  • #47 DarthSerious
    Yea you are right. I wonder why they would leave that out.

    I think that the Imperial Agent should have the Twi'lek as well since they are basically that for the Sith Warrior.

    Really pretty weak selection of species/races imho. I'm surprised that if they can do Twi'lek for some classes why Togruta didn't make it in for at least JK/JC like Dar'Nala, Shaak Ti, Ahsoka Tano & Raana Tey?!

    I also think it's sad Cathar didn't make the list as I'd guess it could be popular with being a funky catlike species + helmets fit no probs.

    Hell, why not add Kiffar and Arkanian/Arkanian offshoot in - not a huge difference from human so really an easy (if somewhat token effort) to at least pad out the lack of choices!

    Hmmm...
  • #56 darthuser1508
    Yeah, I have to say, I really did expect more races than this. I mean, why some obscure race like Rattaki and not Togruta? What about Cathar, Muun, Kiffar, or Arkanians? There are a ton of near-human species they could add in with just the smallest of changes: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Near_human

    The races are just so...blah.

    I am happy beyond belief! "Twilek: Sith Inquisitor"

    In anticipation of almost every comment :

    "because remodelling thousands of armour sets to fit lumpy/spiky/tentacle headed species takes resources that are better used on gameplay"

    and

    "because no-one wants to kiss a fishy smelling/breath mask wearing/bugfaced/bugeyed/hairy/sharp toothed/slimy mouthed alien"

    Also, someone who very heavily inferred he was in beta said it was nice to be able to talk about the "cyborg origin" as opposed to a species but that could be baloney, who knows.

    Between this and swimming I'm almost starting to sound like a BW apologist but in the years I spent playing SWG with its 16 (I think) races the overwhelming majority of people played humans and Twi'leks.
