Friday Update: New Karpyshyn Novel

Today Star Wars: The Old Republic announced Drew Karpyshyn is authoring a new novel titled Revan. An in-depth interview with Karpyshyn is also available on the official site.

Q: In what ways will readers who have read Revan benefit when playing Star Wars: The Old Republic?

A: I think the novel will give them a much better understanding of the Sith Emperor and the Empire, for one thing. The Old Republic Sith Empire is very different from what people know from the movies, or even from the Great Hyperspace War comics that focus on characters like Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh.

The novel will also give them some very direct background and detailed information that ties in directly with key Flashpoints in the game. I can't say too much, of course, but like any great prequel the books will give you the details of what came before to add an extra layer of depth to the experiences in the game
.

As you might expect from the title, the main character of the forthcoming novel is Revan of the Knights of The Old Republic series. While that sets the novel some 300 years before the time of the game, Karpyshyn let us know that there will be some significant characters [in the novel] who appear in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The book will be available "later this year," which surely bears some relationship to "soon." Hit the jump for the official announcement.

In other news, if you are in the Austin, TX area tomorrow, Austin Books & Comics is hosting a Star Wars Day featuring autograph sessions with Star Wars: The Old Republic comic authors Rob Chestney and Alexander Freed. Details about appearances from film stars and schedules available here.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is continuing to expand beyond the core game and into novels and comics. Del Rey Books has already published two novels in the Old Republic timeline, Fatal Alliance and Deceived, and last year announced that a third Old Republic novel was to be written by Drew Karpyshyn, Principal Writer at BioWare, and author of the Darth Bane series of Star Wars novels.

I think this thread wins for the most posts ever at DH ?

Newp. The record is over 600 valid comments in one article.

This one had to win for the most deletes though.

Well, I am looking forward to the book. I am happier hearing news about this than about "polishing" the game. Having said that, the Friday updates have lost a lot of their luster and tend to casually wander by later on the weekend than slavishly check on Friday to see what tidbit Bioware let escape.

I must say with the Friday update be this dudes book has really left the weekend full of NOTHING to discuss or speculate on.. Very disappointed in BW ..... extreamly

Last warning, many posts are becoming flame wars. Further posts targeting those who have differing views and intentionally harassing them will have their account temporarily suspended from posting. Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Why do my comments keep on getting removed? They are not offensive, and I did not flame any one. If you are not going to apply the rules fairly to me, then it is something against me, or something is amiss.

I would like to know if I am welcome here, or was the deletion part of a discussion that went sour. I have a copy of what I said.

I like what DH is doing, but if you don't want me here, I won't bother you.

Deletions are part of entire discussions that turn counterproductive. If the original post of the thread was inflammatory, chances are we deleted it and all the responses to it.
  • #228 Sleeper
Emlaeh is correct, if the root is destroyed, so is the product. That's deep
  • #229 DarthSerious
Hehe. Thanks for clearing that up. Have a good day DH!

If the thread doesn't have anything to do with the article and is just a flame war, chances are it is going to be deleted so... don't respond to them!

Nothing bioware does right now is going to get you "hooked, seriously addicted, wife-threatening divorce". Nothing bioware does right now is going to make you stop playing RIFT and start playing TOR. Because you can't play TOR. That's really it, in the end: the *only* thing that can get you to the point you want is to actually play the game. No amount of updates, no amount of information that they put not, none of that is what's ultimately going to sell the game and retain players. The only thing that can do that is for the game to be both playable and good. The updates are just window dressing.

All that said, I should probably clarify: my point is not that they shouldn't do their best. My point is that people get up in arms over the most meaningless things. And that's really what those updates are. Meaningless. They give us crap to talk about. They're about building and maintaining buzz. The equivalent of water cooler talk. But they don't count for much in the end. They don't reflect in any way, shape or form the quality of the game. More, deeper updates would not mean it's a great game. Fewer or less informative ones don't mean it's a bad one.

Good point. I just want to feel good about dropping $55 on a game and then paying a sub.

However a more deeper update, would mean that they are at least in touch with the community -- acknowledging the feedback of the community -- and working to do a better job.

This was easily recognized as not what the community wanted. So it indicates a lack of care for the community, or some really poor decision making. There are far more things that could easily have been put up as a Friday update that would have been much better. Sure some might have complained, but not nearly as much as this one cased.

Bioware/EA have been, and because of their track record I believe they will continue to be, as upfront as possible with the TOR 'community'. Complaining about a company not being 'In touch' is just another phrase that equals entitlement, 'Customer is always right' crap.

Am I satisfied with the recent update? My TOR-geek isn't, but I can also look at the bigger picture of the game's development, the marketing/lawyers involved. Not to mention a recent convention/event and one currently underway (embargo aside), which this update fell between.

To be honest, I'd rather think positive about this update. As I posted prior, I look at this update as BW/EA giving face time to one of their lead writers, not to mention some great story filler to what we will experience in game.

Will I buy the book? Hell yeah I will now that I know it will further enhance my experience and understanding of the game world.
