Friday Update: New Karpyshyn Novel

Today Star Wars: The Old Republic announced Drew Karpyshyn is authoring a new novel titled Revan. An in-depth interview with Karpyshyn is also available on the official site.

Q: In what ways will readers who have read Revan benefit when playing Star Wars: The Old Republic?

A: I think the novel will give them a much better understanding of the Sith Emperor and the Empire, for one thing. The Old Republic Sith Empire is very different from what people know from the movies, or even from the Great Hyperspace War comics that focus on characters like Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh.

The novel will also give them some very direct background and detailed information that ties in directly with key Flashpoints in the game. I can't say too much, of course, but like any great prequel the books will give you the details of what came before to add an extra layer of depth to the experiences in the game
.

As you might expect from the title, the main character of the forthcoming novel is Revan of the Knights of The Old Republic series. While that sets the novel some 300 years before the time of the game, Karpyshyn let us know that there will be some significant characters [in the novel] who appear in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The book will be available "later this year," which surely bears some relationship to "soon." Hit the jump for the official announcement.

In other news, if you are in the Austin, TX area tomorrow, Austin Books & Comics is hosting a Star Wars Day featuring autograph sessions with Star Wars: The Old Republic comic authors Rob Chestney and Alexander Freed. Details about appearances from film stars and schedules available here.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is continuing to expand beyond the core game and into novels and comics. Del Rey Books has already published two novels in the Old Republic timeline, Fatal Alliance and Deceived, and last year announced that a third Old Republic novel was to be written by Drew Karpyshyn, Principal Writer at BioWare, and author of the Darth Bane series of Star Wars novels.

Oh for sure. But those three extra days are going to rub the community the wrong way.

Shield yourself from the nerd rage.
  • #56 MechaGodzilla
that is an event for press like DH and all info learned is under embargo for at least a week I'd say

Spoiled brats, the lot of ya.

    Not at all.

SWTOR.com is a website about a VIDEO GAME, not a book store.

People expect to hear an Update, about the Game, not a sales pitch for a book.

Call us 'spoiled brats' is like saying we should be thanking the postman for delivering junk mail.

Like this is the first game site to advertise something about a book or card game or comic tie-in...

If not "spoiled brat", then maybe "negative nancy" is a better term.
  • #33 Jobi-Wan
    I agree with Loekii

Swtor may not be the first site to advertise something about a book or card game but this is supposed to be the Friday update about the game, not advertise and try to sell the latest star wars book update...

This has more to do with the game than some of the earlier Fan Friday posts. It doesn't matter, because we are not entitled to any of these updates. BioWare could say "screw it" and only update the site once a month with huge updates for all I care. It's not going to change what's going to be in the game whenever it launches.

    Seriously, people.

it's still a shameless personal product promotion masquerading as a "Friday update" regardless of it's loose tie-ins to the game. it could be construed as, especially knowing that ppl are getting antsy about the release of this game, insulting or at least insensitive/out of touch to many.

  • #54 abner_ford
The fact there is "work" being done on Good Friday can be insulting or insensitive to some people. But hey, that's just another thing people can complain about. It can also be insensitive that they're posting something about a book when they *know* there are a few blind people out there that can't experience the content without special considerations. I'm sure there are other things people can trash BioWare about too.

And where does it say they need to post game related stuff on there website EVERY week? Stop acting like a spoiled brat that whines that they didn't receive the info they wanted!
  • #58 Godsphoenix13
This is a book about the story of the game the past two books have been quite enjoyable and I hate reading books. Its just like if they release a time line update or info about certain characters .... everyone is blowing this way out there is quite ridiculous especially with the fansite summit in a couple days and E3 in almost a month.

another book to fill in the gap before release day? that's such great news! ....................................
also great how this update has nothing to do with the game, adding to how they need to fill in the gap.... bravo BW, bravo
