Friday Update: Sith Warrior Progression and Developer Blog

Today's Friday Update features the Sith Warrior as he develops and amasses power in The Old Republic. While there are many paths to choose from, this example gives you a small glimpse of the armor and abilities a Sith Warrior can claim as he pursues his own destiny. An embed of the video is now available below.

Additionally, Bioware has released a developer blog with Lead UI Artist Michael Voigt detailing the work that goes into creating the user interface in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Michael Voigt also provided a screenshot of how the new UI looks in game. Official DevTracker posts follow the jump. Working Dissection is in the media gallery below. As with all of our dissections we will ignore past items mentioned in earlier dissections. Feel free to point things out that you see in the comments section this post. Make sure to check back throughout the day and weekend for more.

Great work on the dissection DH team, but I think you missed three major points that can be seen in the images I took:

    That's awesome, loving it :)

One friend in our website thinks what produces the red icons on the head of the jedi in screenshot 4 is a taunt ability from the sith, similar to which was used by the jedi to taunt the imperial soldiers in the jedi armour progression video.

Hell of a better update this week, really nice to see the armor upgrades.

I went back and was examining the picture of the Cybertech crafting screen. Of particular note was the mention in the requirements for the selected piece that said "Advanced Armor Fabrication Table." Hopefully that is an indication of some degree customization of interior of our ships. Now of course it could also mean that as soon as you pick your path within the crafting skill (as indicated by the Plastisteel Specialist above the table notation) that the table automatically becomes what you need to able to make the stuff. I don't think it would be a special table only available on a capital world due to the nature of the crafting system. Also of note is the last green item on the crafting list, it would seem to be a jumble of different words from different languages.

I stopped by MMO-Champion today just for shiggles. I took a look at the Tier 12 gear sets for WoW and just busted up inside. Most of Blizzards gear sets have never really been that great, but having been removed from that game for a little while, the difference between it and swtor is laughable to me.

This game cannot come fast enough. I've been relegated to playing the Black Prophecy and APB beta's

I did the exact same thing and had the same reaction. The new armor sets in WoW are just laughably bad. They've always been hit or miss, as any game tends to be, but for raiding gear they are just a joke. It's only made worse by the release of this vid today, and others like it over the last few months, that really punctuate how solid the design team on TOR is. Hopefully there's plenty more great stuff we won't see until we loot it in game.

Not a fan of the Hunter Eye Patch (That mask looks like something out of Bioshock)? Or is it the fruity Mage armor? or just the WTF Paladin and Death Knight gear? And why does the priest have the biggest shoulder guards of them all?

Really, there's no need to go massively bulky and/or flamboyant. IMO a really good minimalist design with the proper color scheme will always be better than some bulky thing with frills on frills.

I'm glad that the SWTOR armor sets are so minimalist and build off each other. There is a logical sense of progression there. As for WoW, Death Knights go from having a really sweet armor set (imo) to something with flames and bat wings coming off the helmet that really doesn't reflect the class, at all. Let's hope the other 5 sets turn out 1/2 as terrible as these ones did.

I'm ok with large, perhaps even bulky, armor if it looks appropriate to the character. Juggernauts, Bounty Hunters, and Troopers should all seem heavily armored, especially as tanks. Where WoW has jumped the armor shark is that even mages end up with massive armor adorned with huge shoulder pads that just seem ridiculous.

Hopefully BW continues to draw on the films and similar resources for inspiration and understand that classes like smugglers, agents, SI, and JC should seem lean and maintain a "light" profile. Blizz seems to have either forgotten that or simply run out of decent ideas.

hmm going to put my speculation hat on. i think maybe that first screenie in the dissection can be used as an indication of how many companions we get. So far all that has been said is more than 3, less than 10, and up to 5 working at a craft bench at a time. And according to the US PC gamer article, the writer found 14 crew skill trainers. so if we assume he found them all and and all companions have 2 specialties or bonuses, then we could be looking at 7 companions per class. now I know DH only has 11 crew skills listed, which could mean the pc gamer guy miss counted. This is all speculation of course. let me know if some other info has come up that i may have missed that would debunk this. :)

Looks like the marauder gets an ability like the dark side power plague - I could be way off here, but to me it also looks like the marauder finishes off the zabrak with an attack that leaves a dot and performs several overcharge lightsaber abilities.

In addition, during the juggies segment of the video the amount of time between the unknown ability that puts the red aura around player faces and the time the consular uses the ability appears to be too short for both to be cast by the same character (the consular). Therefore, I'm assuming that its a juggernaut AOE debuff similar to an aura - maybe force suppression or something similar?

That was my favorite progression video so far. I think it was well-done from an artistic standpoint, and I can't believe I'm the first person mentioning the awesome music. Very foreboding and menacing.

The high-end Juggernaut armor is my favorite armor I've seen in the game so far. The beginning of that clip when he was walking, batting away blaster bolts before nonchalantly Force Pushing that droid was great. The music in the background made it more awesome. Must... get... soundtrack so I can re-create moments like that. I will say that I agree with a statement made earlier that I hope there are more cloth-type garments for the Marauder and they're not all super-mechanical. I thought it was badass, but I do think there should be a good mix in high-end content between that and the style from the first Marauder portion.

I liked the facial customization on the Pureblood, and I also liked the breather mask on the Jedi. I'm wondering if that's a head slot item or if that's something cybernetic. Either way, it's nice to see something that's a bit non-standard on the Jedi.

I do hope the customization options built-in to the UI are extensive. I like the way it looks right now, but I know UI is something that is very personal for many people. With that confirmation from CRR about no 3rd party mods at launch, BioWare better allow for in-game customization to offset that.

I'm also definitely very pleased with the high-end Juggernaut armor. It looks very nicely heavy without suffering from free-floating giant shoulderpad syndrome. Some of the other gear appears to have that, but this is a pretty nice, minimalist set.

Now, as for the Jedi with the breather, I really doubt it's a cybernetic thing. Looking at the planet surroundings, they appear to be on Quesh, which, being a toxic planet, would require them to wear masks. Yeah, now that I look at it, its definitely Quesh, because of the orange, spiky plantlife and the general color scheme.

This Jedi is a probably an NPC, but I highly suspect that players who aren't wearing full helmets on Quesh will automatically appear to be wearing breather masks. Just an idea, but it seems like that'll be standard for anyone who visits Quesh.

Heck, it'd be interesting and amusing if you'd lose health and start to suffocate if you didn't wear a particular headpiece item on Quesh, but I doubt they'd try to force people to equip such a thing if their current gear didn't plausibly cover the face. I expect it'll be a purely visual thing, so as not to deprive people of stats.
