Friday Update: Fan Friday, Studio Insider, and Fan Site Summit Report

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update is a Fan Friday. Senior Community Coordinator Allison Berryman posted two new polls: Which companion character are you looking forward to meeting most? and What is your favorite area of the HoloNet?

Kelzak, Nick of Time and SteveTwo's fan art, new avatars and new icons round out Fan Friday. BioWare also included new concept art for Hutta. BioWare featured SWTOR-Life in this week's Fan Site Spotlight. BioWare announced their schedule of events for the next convention season. Check it out on their Events page.

Also in this week's Friday Update, Audio Designer Scott Morton guides us through the process of creating the perfect mix of music and sound effects to complement the combat experience, from the initial conceptualization to the final implementation. Check out the Studio Insider for more details. Additionally, BioWare created a new thread for community members to submit questions for the next Q&A. The topic of next month's Q&A is sound and music in the Old Republic.

Lastly, BioWare provided a new video from last month's Fan Site Summit.

We brought 15 fan sites from around the world to Austin, Texas to visit the BioWare studio and play Star Wars: The Old Republic.

For two days, the sites met with developers of The Old Republic and played various parts of the game for the first time. Did they enjoy their time here in Austin? Watch the video report to find out!

The Old Republic community has a lot of questions and we want to answer as many as we can. In fact, we're starting this new discussion on our forums solely dedicated to finding out what you want to know. Each month we'll create a new thread for you to ask questions in. We'll be reading and reviewing all of your questions and featuring some of them to be answered in a future Community Q&A section of the Studio Insider!

This month, we want questions focused on the sound and music in The Old Republic. Please feel free to ask us anything you want to know about it!

Some things to remember when posting:

  • Please keep questions courteous and respectful

  • Avoid asking questions that have already been asked this month

  • Ask only one question in the thread

  • Do not bump posts.

Keep in mind that there are some questions we're not able to answer right now, so please don't feel upset if we do not select your question, and please do feel free to ask it again in the future!

Thanks! We're looking forward to your reading your questions!

At the end of the rail-shot video, just to the left of the bounty hunter - does anyone else think that looks like a personal speeder bike?
  • #52 Blofeld
Well there was a vid from PAX East that showed the Jedi origin world played by some kid and he whipped out a personal speeder.
  • #49 DarthShnooky
Good eyes. That definitely looks like a speeder bike. Now, as to whether that is a parked mount from a player, on the other hand, i have no idea. We've seen plenty of speeder bikes in the game, as environmental decoration and non-controllable fast travel systems. No idea on if we'll get to cruise around on 'em with full control, however. I'm hoping for both speeder bikes and landspeeders. Especially multipassenger landspeeders. My girlfriend always puts me on follow when moving from point to point in a zone, let's just skip the middle man already. :)

i think hes right the speeder dosent look like any of the taxi ones we have seen and the decoration ones are usually seen a group
  • #53 Jecalips
I disagree, I think it's probably decoration. We've seen these several times before, in video and pictures, and have been told they are decoration or a 'flight master', to borrow another games term. I suspect this is another case of the former. Even the designing the darkside video example ended up being a 'flight master' ride.

The sound of that Bounty Hunter rail-shot just had me cheering. Sweet! I don't think I've played an MMO before where I would be tempted to "Turn up the sound cause the ability makes such a cool noise".

I'm glad that with all the voiceover stuff, they haven't forgotten the importance of good old sound effects!

That article on the sound design was just great. As a long-time fan of Ben Burtt and his work on the Star Wars films, it's great to know that so much attention and care has been used in making the sound fx for this game. Just hopin' for at least one Willhelm in the game, or it just won't be perfect. :)
  • #51 RogueJedi86
If you love Ben Burtt, I HIGHLY recommend you get the "Star Wars Galactic Phrase Book & Travel Guide". It's written by Ben Burtt himself as a silly in-universe language guide, and has an appendix on how he did the sounds for the original movies and TPM(it came out before AotC and RotS came out). The appendix alone is worth the cheap price you can buy it new.
  • #36 Dejarik
I too am a great fan of Ben Burtt's work and I fear it is patenly obvious from the article that Scott Morton is no Ben Burtt.
  • #37 DarthShnooky
Yeah, but who is? The man is quite literally an audio genius and few others in the industry seem to even come close to what he can do.

The audio they demonstrated in the article was fine by me, however. I don't expect Ben Burtt, and i appreciate that he is putting in the kind of care and attention that he is to this aspect of the game.
