Friday Update: Trooper Progression Video

This Friday brings us an in-depth look at Trooper progression, with a video in the flavor of the previous two progression videos that goes through both Commando and Vanguard Advanced Classes, showing a progression of gear and abilities. Check out the video embed below for more info about one of Star Wars: The Old Republic's emblematic ranged tanks, including abilities like stealth-detection droids and vibroblade attacks.

Official DevTracker post is contained after the jump. Our Working Dissection from the update is in the gallery below. As with all Dissections we will not mention stuff in past Dissections. If you find something you think we should point out, add it to the comments section of this post and if we use it we will credit you for the find.

    The "secondary blast" was actually spotted here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I0imBz6y38) at least 3 times: at 9:14 (when a cat goes down), 14:07 and 14:58 (again, as a last hit ability). As we see, it's used to deal a ton of damage while not in danger of getting seriously damaged, which leads to a pretty obvious conclusion. HP cost.

    I wonder why they use so much close range shooting, when they could have made it look better with more longer range combat.

    Only true up to level 10. Possible reasons:
    1. Low level - not specced for max range;
    2. Medium range on grenade ability;
    3. BW wanted to show Stock Strike ability;

    Commando AC:
    1. Shot 2 (1 sniper) in a bunker from max range;
    2. Shot room full of droids in a ship hall from max range;

    Vanguard AC:
    1. Shot 2 (out of pack of 5) melee mobs at max range;
    2. Shot 1 (out of 2 on the cliff) from max range;
    3. Shot SI from close range, because -
    - he was ganked in a canyon;
    - BW wanted to show Vibro Knife close range ability;
    - BW wanted to show "shot in the face" ability;

    I understand the short range and melee attacks they wanted to show off.

    What I am speaking about, is why choreograph the longer range attacks at such shorter ranger, instead of showing off the positives of range attacks (which is being at range).

    Basically, I am hoping that TOR range combat is not going to be 'run up to 10 feet and stand there shooting'.

    Short range combat is fine, when it is warrented, but this video seemed to show a lot of it when it was uneccessary -- aka the trooper could have engaged the targets much sooner at a farther range.

    And to be clear, I am taking about the scenes where it was just shooting that was shown, rather than the scenes like the swing-out blade attack (which obviously was choreographed to show the blade attack above range combat).

    Another thing to consider is that Vanguard AC is advertized as "close-mid range DD, tanking". So basically Commando AC is the only one capable of long range DD. Bioware showed the class just how it is.
    They could give some exaggerated range on attacks in progression video, but you could imagine the disappointment, when someone specces Vanguard AC only to find out max shooting range is really close mid-range.

    I imagine a few reasons. One being that it's a trooper, not a sniper. They want to portray the class as an in-your-face combat class. Second, it's a video to show off the armor. They want to have good shots to show off the detail of the game. Third... I imagine the range limitations of the abilities were about max in the scene where he's shooting at the agent in the field.

    Hey who said you guys could take a break for a national holiday?? Where is my Pro Tips comic???

    Well anyway, hope the community has a great memorial day.

    I personally would like to thank all active/retired military personal for their service and allowing me to live in this great country.

    Happy Memorial Day soldiers of The Old Republic! Your valiant effort and sacrifice throughout the Outer Rim shall not be forgotten. You are the foundation upon which we build this new and glorious Empire! (muwahahahahaaa)

    With each progression video the graphics become more and more detailed and stunning and the music is phenomenal.

    I believe each video is created using a newer version of the graphics engine, with each iteration the detail improves. The Consular progression video may be the best yet and I hope will be available during the E3 Expo in June.

    Which would make sense.

    However, again, people should take such videos with a grain of salt, because they are specifically choreographed to show off the 'best' (and subsequently hide the worst).

    While they are entertaining, I prefer to see unscripted gameplay -- or at least much longer combat sequences than these videos tend to show. I feel longer gameplay videos are better at translating what the game will play like and what we can expect to see when we are playing the game -- and that sometimes videos like this can skew the expectations and reality of the gameplay experience.

    It is sort of like watching the Trailers, and expecting that is how the game is going to play.

    We still haven't seen a Consular announcement vid and update, we'll get that before a progression vid.

    makes me excited for the SI progression video since they showed the class trailer already =)

    @0:53 you can see the IA sniper rifle's laser site reflecting off the chest armor of the right most scrub trooper.

    I don't know if that is just for cinematic or actually in game. Regardless epic!!!
