This Friday brings us an in-depth look at Trooper progression, with a video in the flavor of the previous two progression videos that goes through both Commando and Vanguard Advanced Classes, showing a progression of gear and abilities. Check out the video embed below for more info about one of Star Wars: The Old Republic's emblematic ranged tanks, including abilities like stealth-detection droids and vibroblade attacks.
Official DevTracker post is contained after the jump. Our Working Dissection from the update is in the gallery below. As with all Dissections we will not mention stuff in past Dissections. If you find something you think we should point out, add it to the comments section of this post and if we use it we will credit you for the find.
As the elite Trooper rises through the ranks of the Republic military, there are several ways he can specialize his training, and several sets of armor and weapons to match. Watch this video to get a small sampling of the many different armors and abilities that your Trooper can acquire through the course of the game.

Posted 5/31/2011 12:29:49 PM1. Low level - not specced for max range;
2. Medium range on grenade ability;
3. BW wanted to show Stock Strike ability;
Commando AC:
1. Shot 2 (1 sniper) in a bunker from max range;
2. Shot room full of droids in a ship hall from max range;
Vanguard AC:
1. Shot 2 (out of pack of 5) melee mobs at max range;
2. Shot 1 (out of 2 on the cliff) from max range;
3. Shot SI from close range, because -
- he was ganked in a canyon;
- BW wanted to show Vibro Knife close range ability;
- BW wanted to show "shot in the face" ability;

Posted 6/1/2011 2:16:43 PMWhat I am speaking about, is why choreograph the longer range attacks at such shorter ranger, instead of showing off the positives of range attacks (which is being at range).
Basically, I am hoping that TOR range combat is not going to be 'run up to 10 feet and stand there shooting'.
Short range combat is fine, when it is warrented, but this video seemed to show a lot of it when it was uneccessary -- aka the trooper could have engaged the targets much sooner at a farther range.
And to be clear, I am taking about the scenes where it was just shooting that was shown, rather than the scenes like the swing-out blade attack (which obviously was choreographed to show the blade attack above range combat).

Posted 6/1/2011 2:52:21 PMThey could give some exaggerated range on attacks in progression video, but you could imagine the disappointment, when someone specces Vanguard AC only to find out max shooting range is really close mid-range.

I personally would like to thank all active/retired military personal for their service and allowing me to live in this great country.

Posted 6/1/2011 2:22:01 PMHowever, again, people should take such videos with a grain of salt, because they are specifically choreographed to show off the 'best' (and subsequently hide the worst).
While they are entertaining, I prefer to see unscripted gameplay -- or at least much longer combat sequences than these videos tend to show. I feel longer gameplay videos are better at translating what the game will play like and what we can expect to see when we are playing the game -- and that sometimes videos like this can skew the expectations and reality of the gameplay experience.
It is sort of like watching the Trailers, and expecting that is how the game is going to play.
