All in all the E3 info drop was like Christmas this year. Sure people may not have gotten every single thing they wanted but there was easily enough to spend the next few weeks dissecting. Also thanks to the DH team for bringing the goods so I didn't have to wade through the childish nonsense over at the SWTOR forums. I think I speak for everyone here when I say we appreciate the time and effort.

    Thanks. We appreciate the compliments.

Hehe... I surprised myself while reading your comment. I found myself nodding at the thanks to the DH team. Without them I would be in the blind completely. I do not have the stomach or patience to go to the main site and play goldsifter.

Incidentally that is also why I haven't been bothered by a lack of releasedates, friday updates etc. I know DH will keep me in the loop.

So thanks guys. You make it possible to keep myself fully updated with all the relevant info just by pressing F5. Damn, more like you and I might just get lazy. :P

    Charming... yes? http://imgur.com/r6WrI

Kind of off topic, but since I've seen it mentioned in the comments I wanted to ask about it. Am I the only one that thinks the excuse they gave for no open beta is pure and utter BS. They can't accommodate the number of players who want in on the open beta? Really? REALLY?!?! How does that even make any sense. The purpose of open beta is more for stress testing servers, not catching major bugs. How are they going to say they can't accommodate the number of people who would want to play in an open beta and instill confidence that they'll be able to handle the server load at launch.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I left a hand print on my forehead from the sheer force of the face palm after I heard that.

I agree on the BS and smokescreen of the excuse for no open beta.

However they will probably do something along the lines of "pre-pay for the game and join the Beta" after the NDA drops. WAR did this and it was still a very successful launch.

The other thing you have to keep in mind is the SIZE of the game. Its not like Rift that was 9gig download. ToR is SIGNIFICANTLY larger in file size (ToR is larger than all of biowares games put together... DA2 was 8 gig IIRC).I am sure there would be plenty of complaints about stalled downloads and lack of disk space and how the open beta was already half over by the time they finished their download....blah blah blah...

They can stay more focused on finishing/polishing/bug killingand releasing the game that diverting energy into putting an open beta together.

They also expressed a high level of confidence with the beta testing group they have.

They already know how many people can play per server. They already know how much 'stress' each server can handle.
They already know how much bandwith they need for each server/data center.
I am sure they already have a plan in place for launch. These things are not a mystery.

As for marketing, 1m+ signed up...think they have intereset in the game covered.

Totally totally agree... Honestly i get both sides of the argument. People like us who say not having an open beta is dumb. and those who say having one is dumb. Im sorry but an open beta has become a stress test and a marketing tool. To not have one to me says they dont have full faith in their product. Im not talking about an open beta in the next two weeks im saying one that is two to three weeks before launch, so that their launch can be as smooth as silk. On the other hand though we shouldnt feel intitled to an open beta which is how alot of people (myself included) feel. With every mmo and a other genres coming out Open beta has become a standard to show the game off and get people hyped about it. When done right an open beta does more for a game then anything else because it gets people wanting more, and that makes them buy it, their friends buy it, hell id even pick up a copy for my dog. They are missing out on a great chance to relieve some people of the worries that they have about the game, but im not going to be a doom sayer just because they are not having one.

what you all fail to see is .. 1 million player signed up for beta

so that would mean 1 million players wanting to log onto open beta..
most open betas have at most 10 servers..

    1,000,000 / 10 = 100,000 per server ... basically thats not stress testing .. thats garunteed crash :D
  • #48 rickroll
Rift had a million sign up too. they did an open beta.

W/O open beta i will have to try out something else. Im not wasting 60 dollars on another MMO.

imrick is why BioWare doesn't wanna do beta. People today treat betas more like free previews of the game and not actual testing servers, and complain and badmouth the game when there's any big glitches, not realizing what a beta means. That's why most developers today do their "betas" in alpha and treat betas more like a free preview, specifically because people have tried to turn it away from an actual testing process. That would be why BioWare's sticking to the closed game testing.
  • #64 Mesar
Actually Open Beta -IS- a free preview of the game and much more of a marketing stunt than actual testing. It tests the network infrastructure for high load conditions, but the main aim is to generate positive word of mouth about the game.

What's wrong with a free preview of something that you're potentially going to spend hundreds of dollars on anyway?
  • #50 Kaiser
So unless you try a non-finished, glitchy, buggy game that will reset your characters once you're done for free, you won't dish out the money to play the full game?

That doesn't make a lick of sense...
  • #43 Dejarik
"The purpose of open beta is more for stress testing servers" is the reason, not to give everyone who wants to a free trial of the game.

Businesses try not to spend money they don't need to and a stress test doesn't require that you run the game as if it were live when you're not getting any revenue from those playing.

A stress test doesn't even require all the 1m+ people signed for beta so they just invite as many of them as they need and they extrapolate from that.
  • #41 stoffi
Why are people raging so much over open beta. Open beta is a thing of the past, and seriously, you are going to want to play the actual game anyway, where your toons don't get reset after next build is installed.
