E3 2011: Gamespot Live Stage Demo Dissection

Gamespot scored a live stage demo at E3 2011 of Star Wars: The Old Republic with Lead Writer Daniel Erickson as the narrator of the action on screen. In the demo, a Republic group on Alderaan attempts to make Bouris Ulgo answer for his crimes. Fortunately for us, the demo contains several tidbits such as epic set piece loot, rested experience system, tiered alignment system, and much more. As with all of our dissections, items noted in prior dissections will not be mentioned here again unless otherwise important. Feel free to add your thoughts and items you noticed in the video. If we decide to use your find, we will credit you in the dissection. See the Media Gallery below for the dissection.

Would have been neat to have 'Bishop' VO all the Codex info.

georg responds about the rating on gear:
    http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?p=6754199#edit6754199
"Since all weapons and armor in SWTOR have modification slots, this rating is not reflective of the overall quality of the item, since that's up to what the user slots into the item.

Damion may elaborate more, but I think you guys are overreacting a bit"

I'm curious how they get that 7 piece epic set while leveling. If they didn't put it together just for the video, it'd be cool if you got an epic item at the end of major class story chains.

you get different pieces at various levels throughout your story arc:
    Levels: 8, 13, 16, 19, 22, 24, 28, and 30

The current set is not really comparable to blue (or higher) gear you could get at say level 30 but I believe BW is working on that.

i got a pic of the gloves at level 8 for the Jedi Knight if someone is interested.

In screenshot 13, the first paragraph on Bouris Ulgo is taken right from his official site bio. The second paragraph isn't though, and looks more like an updated version of his bio that reflects the situation you encounter in-game. So at least parts of the in-game codex use info from the official site(or vice-versa).

I like the Armor Piercing Rounds on one of the last screenies. After playing ME2 Soldier Shepard I had hoped Trooper would get ammo powerups, and I'm so pleased we get them after all.

In the gamespot version of this, DE says the difficulty of the boss encounter scales to group size and that includes solo play.

In the "VIP" showing of this, it's mentioned that Ulgo is a descendent of Trask, the first character you meet in KOTOR who tells you to get dressed, opens a door, fights with you and takes on Darth Bandon while you make good your escape from the Endar Spire.

In the IGN version of this, DE talks about a "vote node" for really important decisions where scores seem to be added together to make the decision meaning 1 person can overrule 3 others if their combined conversation roll scores are less.

I'll have to see more before I believe that "Rating" was specifically about a gear score or if it was just in regards to the armor. I hate putting "gear scores" on a character's UI. Absolutely hate it.

I like the idea of gearscore. It helps to see the good players from bad, but don't get me wrong, I won't be kicking people simply because of bad gear, but if I see a trooper wearing a Jedi robe, it's /vote kicking time... xD

And how exactly gearscore helps separating good players from bad? I've seen maxed out characters in terms of gearscore standing in fire and then again I out DPS them in 2 tiers lower gear.
  • #27 stoffi
That greatly depends on how easy the content is. If we're talking about vanilla wow comparison here(which had no gearscore, but you could judge players by the gear just as easily), then you can obviously separate good from bad, considering the content is for the hardcore players, granted there are some leachers, but most guilds, at least the ones I was in kicked those right away(AFK'ers and just bad players).

In terms of TBC, it was a little easier, but still, you were able to see those rotten eggs clearly, excluding healers, since they can get away with things easier.

I didn't play WotLK much, so mentioning it is a bad example. And from what I've heard, the content was really easy. So no, you won't be able to see who's good or bad in terms of gear score.

Hopefully, SW:TOR will be different, and actually difficult. :)

Don't expect a too challenging difficulty, I guess they want as many paying customer as Blizzard wants for WoW (and in the end that's why since WotLK it's going downhill there imho).

Very much agree. Somewhere along the way things just went to shits. Judging if people are a good or bad player by looking at there gear is absolutely ridiculous. Gearscore among many other brainless addons, ruined the little fun was left of wow.
Hell, before i quit after 5 years of playing i'd cleared All content using only one addon and one addon only, boss mods. A brilliant addon that could very very easly been added to the standard addons of blizzard. Im probably rambling hard here now, but that's the reason i applaud no external addons in swtor.

100% agree with you on this. I got so tired of people on WOW requiring certain gearscores or ilvls + achievements to get into groups. totally ruined the fun of the game. I'm still hoping they exclude achievements or at least keep them to a minimum and praying they never allow outside addons.
