Friday Update: Battle for Alderaan and E3 Highlight Videos

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update is the Battle for Alderaan Highlights Video. The video includes footage of a group of players taking on King Ulgo. Before this, a live stage demo from Gamespot featured the quest at E3 2011 along with many others. Up until now, the context of the event was muddy at best. However, we now have a greater understanding of Alderaan's story and more specifically, the self-proclaimed King Ulgo.

A working dissection of both of the videos is in the media gallery below. Make sure to check back for more. As with all of our dissections, items noted in prior dissections will not be mentioned here again unless otherwise important. Feel free to add your thoughts and items you noticed in the video. If we decide to use your find, we will credit you in the dissection.

The official DevTracker post and video embed follow the jump. Alternately, you can view the high-definition version of the video via our Youtube account.

Update: BioWare just moments ago released a new video from E3, this time highlighting commentary from the fans lucky enough to get a chance to play. Embed of the video is available after the jump.

DevTracker Post

Many people in attendance at this year's E3 had the chance to slip behind closed doors and see a live demo of a previously unseen portion of Alderaan. In it, a group of players confronts a Republic war hero-turned-power hungry King who has seized the throne in a misguided bid to protect his people from an impending Sith invasion.

We wanted to share the experience with the community as well, so we put together this video to capture the highlights of the mission to bring down the would-be King of Alderaan.

The excitement was palpable and many people waited in line for several hours before finally getting into the booth. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive and we are truly humbled by all of the enthusiasm and excitement for the game.

We have put together a highlights video to share the best parts of the experience with the entire community. Thank you all for your continued support and passion for [I]Star Wars: The Old Republic and be sure to keep checking back for the latest updates!

i just saw Daniel Erickson.....'s abs next to Felicia Day.....'s glasses.
    /another nerd bonner.
(yes the bonner is for both of them)

but still, the fact that BioWare still updated another thing we already knew or that was barely interesting (i still find Daniel & Felicia interesting...honorably...and sexually) gives me rage of a nerdy variety.

He's all over that video. Jeez Sado, Did they just follow you around with a camera hoping for another reaction shot of you shaking your head?

Animations are still a bit clunky, but to me, lighting and blaster effects seem improved, especially near the beginning of the vid. Still, don't count on TOR having the best combat animations out there, even at release.

From my experience all the animations in any video always seem a bit clunky. It changes a lot when your actually playing the game. They look odd as well because they are being seen from the perspective of a non player or a 3rd party, so it looks weird with all the dif latencys factored in as well.

That's true. I've always said MMOs in general rarely look "fun" or "smooth" in videos, but when you're actually playing, it's a different story. Unfortunately, most of us can't actually play it, so vids are all we have to judge :(

It seems a bit silly even to me, but I got a little excited by the music. Great music can really add a lot of epic feeling to a game.

I don't recall seeing that smuggler shock CC before, although I'm not as keen on that stuff as some of you haters are.

I agree. This is one of the few times that we've heard some original music from TOR. And, I liked it. It had a fast action-friendly pace to it. Cant say that we didn't get anything new in todays update.

The Jedi Consular wears Pants and that was indeed a Force Slam Ability. good to see a Consular in combat rather than healing.
  • #79 SlickAWG
The Consular ability seen in the video is "Force Stasis", not "Force Slam". We've actually seen it before, in a Taral V playthrough video.

    Updated with link.

I don't get why people are raging over Friday updates. Take them as they are and move along with your day, if it's disappointing or not, oh well. There's always next week. Why in the world would they jam pack a Friday update with every little piece of content and explain every class tree, companions, ect? To me, that'd make the game boring when it was released because nothing would seem new. One part of MMO's I've always loved is theocrafting and finding things out by myself or with friends. I don't get peoples mentality these days.

yea i mean at least we get friday updates. They could just hold all info untill near the release if they wanted. I cant stand all the qq on the official forums.

was a good-ish update, wished for something bigger, but meh...I take what I can get and be grateful for it. beside, it was a good watch :D
