EA Details Beta Test Weekends in September

In conjunction with the preorder event, Electronic Arts released a statement this morning giving fans a better idea of when to expect to be able to get another opportunity to play the game. In what Electronic Arts calls Beta Test Weekends fans will get a chance to play the game starting in September.

As anticipation grows, BioWare also proudly announced today that Star Wars: The Old Republic will open "Beta Test Weekends" starting this September. These weekend play sessions will be open to selected players worldwide and create an opportunity for fans to get a sneak peek of the epic stories, worlds, quests, battles and characters in the game. Please visit www.StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com to register for game testing and to stay tuned throughout the summer for more details as they become available.

Dr. Ray Muzuka also comments in the article that they are targeting Holiday 2011 as the launch for The Old Republic.

"We are targeting Star Wars: The Old Republic to be one of the biggest launches of holiday 2011"

As we get closer to September, we will let you know when more information becomes available on the beta test weekends. Thanks to Wolf68 and chronium for the tip.

This *was* exciting, but being Australian, it'll probably tell me "Beta Play Weekends are not available in your region".

I'm so pissed off at EA right now.

Staggered regional launches have been going on with games for a long time, and that's talking about products that are nowhere near the hype level of this. It's honestly not surprising. It's unfortunate that not everyone is included right at the beginning, but I imagine it was a decision that was deliberated over for a long time. There are typically good reasons for a company to say, "You can't give us your money yet".

Hopefully the delay will only be for a month or two, to allow for things such as server stability, bug fixing, dedicated Oceanic servers, and more localized support. Looking on the bright side of things, the game that will launch in other areas of the world will be a better, more polished product than initially. Of course, there are a lot of drawbacks in not getting your hands on the game as quickly as possible too...

Sadly, releasing American and European versions of the game first and then releasing in other localities over time has become the norm. While I feel for my non-American/European friends, I can't say I'm surprised.

I'm just thankful to have a better window for when SWTOR will be released. I've been leery about getting too involved in Rift which (while I'm enjoying it), I'm really just playing it to pass the time until SWTOR gets released. By knowing that we're not realistically getting SWTOR until October at the earliest, I can enjoy it for now and not feel like I'm wasting my time playing it, with SWTOR possibly coming out next month.

This means we can probably look forward to the NDA coming off as well.

These closed beta weekend events worked out fantastically for Rift, so I'm glad to see BioWare doing this as well. I just hope I can get in. I want to play my TROOPER NAO!!!

Don't worry folks, Dr. Muzyka is a fellow Canadian. When he says holiday 2011, he's probably referring to Canadian Thanksgiving - the 2nd weekend of October

lol, sadly it's EA who is in charge of distribution so most likely no.

Received conformation of my order from origins and plugged my code in at the SWTOR site and once it launches will be able to download from origins while the CE is in the mail Thank you EA for a smooth transaction. Lookfoward to the beta !!!!

They'd be going head to head with a giant who really needs no introduction. I wish the best of luck to both companies.

My pre-order confirmation from Amazon notes "estimated date range you can expect to receive your order is Jan 3 - Jan 5"

I chose the 1-3 day expedited shipping option, and I'm in Canada

You'll be downloading the game for the early access, so it doesn't matter.

Oh definitely, I'm just curious if the shipping date is just a placeholder estimate, or an indication of potential launch window
  • #28 Oddball_E8
Game.se told me "september" as release date... so i doubt its anything but a placeholder...
