SDCC 2011: Day 1 Live Blog & Coverage

The first day of Darth Hater's coverage of Star Wars: The Old Republic activities at San Diego Comic-Con kicks off at 3:30p PT with our live blog of the "Join Us, It Is Your Destiny" panel, and we'll burn up the servers again at 7p PT for a live blog of the Q&A session at BioWare Base. Please note this post will contain all of our on site coverage for today.

Make sure to refresh this post for the most up-to-date information coming out of the panel. We will transcribe the audio and update with direct quotes as soon as possible after the conclusion of each event. Live blog follows the jump.

Note: Please keep in mind that all of quotes are rough and should not be taken as 100% accurate until we get the audio transcribed. ;)

  • 7:13p: Stream started of the panel, life-size Malgus unveiled at the BioWare Base. Attendees should go to check it out.

  • 7:16p: Q&A Starts. Stephen Reid Introducing James Ohlen, Rich Vogel.

  • 7:17p: Question: Release Date? Stephen Reid: We are targeting holiday 2011. Rich Vogel: What does that mean? That means we're beta testing the game, figuring out at the quality level we want to release, and that is why we haven't released the date yet. We're testing the game, making sure it has a good balance and experience for our players. We don't want to release crap, and we wont. That's not BioWare. James Ohlen: You heard it from Rich Vogel, we are not releasing crap. RV: There you go.

  • 7:17p: Question: You released details in the preorder that there is going to be the store in the collectors edition, what sort of items should we expect to see in that store? JO: Well, they are quite very exciting items that we have yet to determine so... Question: What kind of items will they be then, like cosmetic items, etc? SR: They will be more cosmetic than would be... JO: Actually, there will be weapons and armor but we are not going to be giving you an advantage in power levels. When you get the store you'll be able to buy items that will up your power, but they'll really just be cosmetic in terms of you can a similar powered item that looks different by playing the game normally. SR: But you will have it because you have the CE. And in addition the collectors store is actually a location in the game as well, it's not just a random vendor. JO: It's actually an exclusive location in the game, kind of like a... RV: VIP area. SR: Yeah, like a VIP lounge. Question: Will the items be microtransaction based or credits? JO: Credits. SR: Yeah, we already got your money when you bought the collectors edition.

  • 7:18p: Dallas Dickinson welcomed on stage.

  • 7:19p: JO: We have the ability to have dozens of dozens of colors to modfiy weapons in the game. The color crystal you get is a yellow, gold, or a "yellow core with a black glow." Look for confirmation later.

  • 7:20p: Question: Are there shards in the game? JO: We have the tech to do that but we will be using it very sparingly. On launch day we might have to use it in some capacity, once the population normalizes though, that is not something we plan to use.

  • 7:21p: Question: Can you change your Advanced class? JO: "So the question is, in Star Wars: The Old Republic you have advanced classes that you are able to pick at a certain level, or you specialize your class, can you switch once you have made a choice in advanced class? Currently we are going to be allowing you to respec (change) your advanced class, and the reason we went that way was because it is a big choice and some people might make the wrong choice. The very first time you decide to respec (change) your advanced class it's not going to be super expensive, we're going to make it relatively affordable and then after that it will become a lot more difficult. So we're going to let you correct your mistakes, for example - if you're a Sith Warrior and you decide to pick the Juggernaut route and then two levels in you're like "I didn't want to be a Juggernaut" - that first correction will be easy but after that we're going to make your advanced class choice be very difficulty to respec."

  • 7:22p: Question: Can we get extra details on the companion ai customization? JO: Can't talk about that yet.

  • 7:23p: JO: We wanted to allow customization of companion looks, this was based on testing feedback.

  • 7:23p: Question: When can you make that customization? JO: Initial companion kits will happen early but later ones we're working on and will comment later. RV: It's still a work in progress.

  • 7:24p: Question: What options are there for people who can't play much? JO: One of the things we wanted was to make sure we never had a grind in Star Wars: The Old Republic. It's endless. We're going to have plenty of story content for you, so if you love BioWare RPGs, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

  • 7:25p: JO: We have reacted on the reaction of the speeders. We were originally going with a more traditional upgrade route to the speeders in terms of speed, slow at first and then at endgame get the super-fast one. And that led us to, if you're going to have a slower speeder it has to not look like it should go super fast so that's why we designed those ones. After a little thought and reacting to what fans were saying, we went back to the drawing board and adding new speeders because we were originally afraid of clipping issues but found that they actually look really good in the game in the case of land speeders. So now we're just churning out a bunch of them and I think people will be really happy. RV: Yeah, I think you'll be happy with what you see.

  • 7:26p: Q: Will there be multi-seat speeders to have your friends be able to join you on your speeder? JO: That is an excellent idea for a post-ship feature. RV: Absolutely, excellent.

  • 7:27p: Q: Any plans for a Mac version? JO: We have no plans for a mac client at launch, we have plenty of people in the office though that play the game on Bootcamp, and it works great.

  • 7:28p: JO: We have an unannounced feature that will unlock other races/species for factions. (Legacy system)

  • 7:28p: Q: Number of abilities at 50? Everyone: Around 30.

  • 7:29p: Q: Sith pureblood inquisitors? JO: Currently not allowing that, they fit the class but not the story, right now we're not allowing it but maybe. There was a lot of debate on this.

  • 7:30p: Q: Plans for vanity armor that overwrites the equiped one? JO: We debated that, but we're not doing that. If you want to look great you'll have to make scarifies in combat strength. SR: All of the items you get from the vendor will be primarily cosmetic items like a vip location that you will be able to purchase with credits.

  • 7:32p: Q: Are you going to be able to customize the look of your starship? JO: That's on the wall of crazy post ship features.

  • 7:32p: Q: Titles? JO: We have a ton of titles and you'll be able to choose. They're totally cosmetic.

  • 7:33p: Q: Favorite class? RV and DD: Imperial Agent JO: Sith Warrior SR: Smuggler to balance out this empire bias.

7:21p: Question: Can you change your Advanced class? JO: We are going to allow you to respec out of your advanced class, first time not very expensive, and then after that it will become progressively more costly. First time easy, after that difficult.

Two AC of the same core class share about 50% of the same skills and a share talent tree. If you switch ACs your learning cure will be a lot shorter then switching to a fully new class. Read a few forums posts and play solo for a few hours and you will be set to play your new AC. BW made the right move here. WTG BW =-)

I was on this bandwagon myself an I am glad they add it in to the game. Woulda been a real bitch to level one ac to 50 to check out the full abilities just to say well this class isnt my style an have to reroll.. Glad this was done

I'm in the camp that knew it would happen too. All those people on the forums who didn't want it weren't speaking from a perspective of a player. They were just looking through their rose colored glasses. Once people got their hands on the game, it became abundantly clear that AC switching was necessary, and there was never a doubt in my mind that this was the case. In the end common sense won out and I'm happy about it.

I wish they asked about the planets. Were were told there wasn't going to be any more planets and we have 17, they said 19, as well as other small planets (flashpoints/raids). Does that mean that they are trying to scrape together some extra planets fast (unlikely), or were they working on them this whole time and just didn't think they could finish by launch?

I'm not sure why not wanting it meant that I "wasn't speaking from the perspective of a player". I was only (originally) hoping for skills to be tied to story quests, rather than purchased from vendors - which obviously for a long time we've known was not the case - and in that vein I wanted the advanced class selection to ultimately be something important for my character, something that in fact identifies me. I think being able to change advanced classes means it's inconsequential.

But, in the end, it's not really a big thing. I can always choose not to change it.

While I understand that, the fact of the matter remains that gameplay takes precedence over all else, and that's exactly how it should be in a game. Like you said, you like the idea of having your decision mean more and identify you in some way, but that is not the case at all for me and many other gamers. Some people just want to enjoy the story and be able to optimize their characers gameplay, and that takes trail and error.

Locking AC's is extremely inconvenient, and a massive time sink for people who decide after 30+ levels they made the wrong choice in AC. That argument of simply rerolling is a very bad one as this game is huge. For those that are on limited play time, all that progress would simply go out the window. If you have 10+ hours a day to grind out 200 hrs worth of content that might not be problem, but for someone who might only have 2hrs or less a day, that's weeks or potentially months of progress lost, when a simple AC swap is all that's need to experiment with a new style of gameplay. If there was a different story per AC, then that would be different, but you'd have to go through the same exact content again in order to see the new AC. Forcing people to repeat content is the opposite of what BioWare wants. That's when you get into the realm of grinding.

It simply didn't make any sense at all from a gameplay standpoint from day one, and once in the hands of beta testers, they agreed. Many people who were against switching AC's changed their mind once they got to play the game. AC switching of some kind, even if was only a few times, was absolutely necessary and that's why it's in the game.

Yeah, I was hoping for it to be locked to add more weight and significance with your choice as well. However, they probably made the right choice to allow respecs on it for the overall playerbase. Of course, I hope their "progressively more costly" mechanic is steep, and not a "Okay, first respec is 100 credits, and they increase by 50 each time" kind of thing.

Some of the people who made Dark Age of Camelot are involved with the making of this game. I don't remember the exact prices, but in that game respec prices did ramp up considerably. I for one would have love to see a quest chain involved to switch your AC.
  • #91 abner_ford
That would be cool too. Time is the invaluable commodity that always makes players think twice.

I think it's fine as long as it's expensive. There's a certain convenience to respeccing to fill raid roles and the like, but I don't want a system like in lotro where I was changing my lore-master's skill set several times a day, depending on whether I wanted a pet focus for soloing, a dps focus for soloing or grouping or a debuffing focus for raiding, and carrying multiple sets of gear for stats in each role. As I said before, I think choosing an advanced class should be a significant event. Change your mind or want to try the other AC to see how it plays and then decide? Great. Then you can settle on something. We'll always have the ability to repec the trees for our advanced class, so my consular can go from throwing pebbles to healing if I need to (well, okay, yeah, that's not ever gonna happen :D )

And then if you want to change ACs later? Sure. You just pay out the yin-yang for it.

Although I would suspect that eventually that price will be inconsequential to endgame players and, again using myself an example, you'll see a consular spin-kicking all over the place with a double-bladed saber one minute and casting healing trance the next.

The quest chain thing is a cool idea, too.

I want to know, how many PER SIDE flashpoints there are total? And how many Raids (operations) there will be? I know these numbers might be a flux but a rough idea would be nice.
