GameStar Magazine Interview With Gabe Amatangelo On Operations

In this month's issue of GameStar magazine, there is an interview with Gabe Amatangelo on operations, PVP, and more. As part of the interview, Gabe Amatangelo gives us some new insight on the operation sizes players will have a chance to take part in The Old Republic.

Each Raid has 2 sizes, for 8 and 16 heros, as well as ajustable [sic] difficulty levels. The quality of the loot is based on the difficulty setting of the instance." After every bossfight EACH player gets a bag of Rewards", says Lead designer Gabe Amatangelo. "Inside that Bag you can find class specific Items, or Badges which can be used to buy items. You don't have to fight for your rewards."

Credit on the quote goes to Cebo and his thread on the official forum. We'll alert you on any translation updates regarding the magazine as they happen.

Update: More translated for the article on PVP:

There will be no companion characters in PvP fights, at least not in the Warzones, where teams of both factions battle each other. The game modes in pvp will be along the lines of classical pvp variants such as capturing and holding control points and Capture the flag. Thus far we have seen four and eight player warzones.Although there are tests for mass pvp fight going on Georg Zoeller didn't comment on mass pvp fights at that moment.

Furthermore BioWare is working on a warzone where players from the same faction can fight faction each other, but only as a backup solution in case the enemy can't provide enough players. There will also be open world pvp fights in which each faction can pursue missions objectives. Several planets will offer special pvp assignments, which could be something like capturing enemy buildings or eliminating enemy leaders.According to Zoeller this ensures that pvp oriented players can focus on certain areas and it gives them a bit more structure. The question concerning armed combat vehicles, Georg Zoeller answers with a promising maybe... So, chances are the players might be able to ride into combat in vehicles, maybe not in open world pvp but in Warzones. Apart from this, players will be able to fight against other players during some of their regular quests, similar to Warhammer Online, where some quests lead intro enemy territory making an pvp encounter more likely.

And actually... assigning the loot, and surviving the drama took more time then killing the enemies...

    THIS!

When you have to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour on loot distribution politics, something is very wrong with the system.

No DKP? No ladder system? Simply brilliant. Now people can concentrate on downing mobs and not worry about what's going to drop, who's gonna roll on it, "no you can't roll on that for your alt we already have two of that class here", no loot ninjas...Feel free to disagree with me on this if you will, but I just developed a man-crush on Gabe I loved that news so much.

Is it possible? Can it be true? Will raids now be more about having fun rather than becoming nightmarish loot grinds? I certainly look forward to that. Though, I hope there is some room to adjust the number of raiders between 8 and 16, while incrementally increasing the difficulty. Just for those times when more than 8 but less than 16 people want to go raiding.

I doubt they will have sliding difficulties for that, but I wouldn't put it past some guilds to take on normal 16-man op content with 12-15 decked out, experienced raiders. Just for the fun of it.

The bag system is just so... beautiful.

I didn't think I could like Gabe Amatangelo more after the "Guard" system in PvP was detailed, but now? I just need someone to point me to the nearest Gabe Amatangelo shrine so I can light some candles and present a suitable offering.

After reading this, and then looking at the official forum post I think a lot of people are missing a lot of the point.
Based on the Q&A from SDCC, there are boss drops. Same as per usual. This bag system appears to be a bonus. If that is the case, the class specific loot might simply be loot from any of the random world drops, might be epic raid loot, or might be random junk.
I do think the idea of a chance at something, even "badges", to use the WOW term, are a good way to provide a small incentive to those who don't always win loot. Badges have always left a mixed feeling with a lot of people when done in the WOW manner. That means getting raid level gear without ever actually raiding. Personally, I have mixed feelings about that, but its come in super handy for gearing up alts, so I'm going to abstain from voicing judgement.
As long as this is some sort of supplement to the boss loot, where the best loot is still the couple of items directly dropped by the boss, I see this as pretty cool. Heck, you could even do away with the badges/commendations and go to a semi rigid table and simple make it chose-able per boss bag. Then, after running it enough times you are able to fill out the off set pieces of your gear.

    Dear Haters ,
here's a on the fly translation of the lemrics text .I hope that it's a bit better than the google one .

awesome job. it reads alot clearer. :)

Very nice, they should take that idea and use it for all the way down loot. That model resolves much of the loot issue that happen in many MMO's.

Im liking the sound of this. Also i did mention it in the thread on the forum but its moving very quickly and quite heated. Just that i saw this in the Facebook post from PC Gamer UK today....

'In this months preview section, Tim takes a look at Star Wars: The Old Republics endgame...'

Just wondered if anyone had there sub copy yet. Sounds like a blanket info release for the printed mags. So should be some more articles coming i reckon.

You do go the extra mile to get information. I like a bag with items, tokens and cash. Even if the item isn't usable at least you receive something.
  • #26 Muskaan
It may not be useable to you, but it maybe useable to someone else. I.e. explaining with WoW analogy, two Fury warriors in raid and boss drops Deathbringer's Will in Bag for Warrior 1. Bag drops some random junk for Warrior 2. Warrior 1 already has DBW and Warrior 2 does not-- you get the drift ?
  • #16 nuDEMON
Thank god, I hate going through instances where a boss drops ONE damn item.
  • #20 Furycrab
Your odds of getting loot might not be that much better, but you won't be debating loot. Just look in the bag. I personally don't mind as long as the odds of getting loot aren't stupidly low. Can't say I mind the idea of not having to deal with Lootcouncils of any kind.

  • #14 Bartholomew
You also need to have items of some kind for people who have already completed the raid. That way they will come back several times to help other players and still receive something.
