Friday Update: Esseles Developer Walkthrough

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update is a new developer walkthrough based on the Esseles Flashpoint. Republic players will be able to experience this flashpoint early on in their journeys, and will need to band together to protect a high-ranking diplomat and fight off an Imperial boarding party.

Working dissection is in the media gallery below. As with all of our dissections, items noted in prior dissections will not be mentioned here again unless otherwise important. Feel free to add your thoughts and items you noticed in the videos. If we decide to use your find, we will credit you in the dissection. Make sure to check back throughout the day for more. Official Devtracker post follows the jump.

During the week of San Diego Comic-Con, a select number of people had the opportunity to play through The Esseles,' a Flashpoint that Republic heroes will be able to experience for themselves early in their hero's journey. In the Flashpoint, players must group together to protect a high-ranking diplomat and fend off Imperial boarding parties.

For everyone who was unable to join us in San Diego, we've put together a new video featuring developer commentary from Director of Production Dallas Dickinson. Check out our new Developer Walkthrough, and then secure your place in a galaxy far, far away by pre-ordering your copy of Star Wars: The Old Republic!

with TOR being advertised as having "cinematic combat" it was disappointing to see the "rocket punch" ability being used on the pc and the pc just standing there shrugging it off as if nothing happened. i'm pretty sure it has a kd component to it, so did the ability miss or the pc resist its effect? even if that were the case, it would be nice to see some kind of registry of the attack. i hope it just need polish

Sticky grenade has a "that that" typo. You can see it in the dissection. That that's awesome! I love it!

Are the levels for this Flashpoint correct?
In the beginning of the clip the groups levels are as follows:
    Jedi Knight level 9
    Consular level 9
    Smuggler level 9
    Trooper level 9

Then their levels dramatically change to the following:
    Jedi Knight level 74
    Consular level 24
    Smuggler level 68
    Trooper level 80

Then right before they open the airlock on the Engineering department their levels jump again:
    Jedi Knight level 88
    Consular level 27
    Smuggler level 49
    Trooper level 60

    What's going on here?

From begginning to end they are all level 9.

Anytime you see a different number is during a conversation, and the number indicates the roll number they got, explained in the video. If you roll the highest number you "win" the conversation response.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you Jobo for the insight regarding my question. I totally missed that explanation in the Flashpoint video.

Yeah, showing us the numbers is useful. If they didn't show them, people would wonder why they didn't get to talk in a group conversation. Showing the numbers ensures we see exactly how close we were to winning(or losing) any random roll to talk.

well I like the game, but I was disappointed with this video. I had a few problems the first being when the little shock teams were ramming into the hull with their drill bit drop ships. The metal looked pretty jagged from the hull being pushed in wouldn't that vent air into space and suck everyone towards the breaches in the hull? I mean I could see laser cut precision with a seal being okay but punching through like that would just vent everything. My second problem occured with the contreversial decision of the group to vent the engineering crew. Reason and logic alone would dictate that a jedi npc, a jedi, and a jedi consular would all go with the decision to spare the crew and take the long route. On top of that who designed their ships to open the doors to space, disable the magnetic shielding that prevents air from escaping into space, and even built the main engineering deck of the ship to do that to reset the power core? My third problem was the encounter with the bounty hunter boss...right off the bat he uses jetpack charge with uppercut on the smuggler, yet the smugg doesn't get knocked down or dazed/stunned at all. In fact he just stands there seemingly unaffected. It just seemed like poor planning went into this and I hope they correct some of these things before release. Don't get me wrong I'm still a huge fan of this game and I have my pre order, but this vid just didn't sit well with me. I play games to escape from reality, but this vid was a little too far from reality for me...On that note I'm going to jump back in my spaceship now and rocketboot away.

My answer to the perceived technical issues is this: This science fiction/fantasy. You can come up with just about any excuse for anything.

    For instance:

"I had a few problems the first being when the little shock teams were ramming into the hull with their drill bit drop ships. The metal looked pretty jagged from the hull being pushed in wouldn't that vent air into space and suck everyone towards the breaches in the hull?"

Did you see what the pods looked like from the outside? Maybe the part of them against the hull is larger, and the surface that seals onto the hull points down at the hull where it's not damaged. Or maybe they use some neato sci-fi space foam to seal.

Also, difficult decisions must be made and everyone is different. Maybe they didn't want to take the chance there wasn't enough time, and save the many by sacrificing the few (which doesn't explain the dark side points, but whatever).

And the fact that the engineering section has a door that can vent it to space is probably a very good idea, in case venting it saves the ship. The fact that the crew was caught in there is probably not part of the normal procedure, especially since it was the Imperials who locked the place down. A bridge lockdown shouldn't be able to be defeated easily, thus using the reset is a drastic solution that isn't normally done in a case like this.

The rest is just game mechanic stuff. It has to do with rolls and stats. MMOs are going to have some license when it comes to reality. Otherwise lightsabers would kill "boss" types with one swipe (except, of course, for those wearing mandalorian iron (not to mention the shields of the era, I suppose)).

Players making decisions you don't like may happen during moments like this...with my Agent I probably would've picked the darkside option anyway lol.
  • #58 RogueJedi86
Your agent also can't do the Esseles anyways. :P
  • #64 AgentOP
    I know lol
  • #57 stoffi
Ah, can't wait to be a light side imperial lol. I'll be a rare breed :p

I love the look of the heavyset NPCs, like that one guy at the beginning. I wonder just how chubby we can make our player characters.

So far, all of the fat characters I've seen have been male, but I personally think a big, fat, female smuggler would be awesome.

I'm only halfway through watching the vid and I've nerdgasmed about ten times.

God I love the polish in this game. It's going to be revolutionary!

My condolences to your soiled keyboard and mouse.
