Newsarama Interview With James Ohlen

In an interview via Newsarama, James Ohlen discusses the reasons behind the lack of a Star Wars: The Old Republic release date, details companion customization, and gives a behind the scenes take on the early production of the game.

We don't want to give a specific release date until we're absolutely certain that when we launch the game it'll be a smooth launch and a bug-free experience. It would be terrible if we released and the servers fell down or there was a bug that detracted from the overall experience. It'd be terrible for Star Wars fans, they'd be really sad, cause they're excited about it as shown by the pre-order numbers, and it'd be disappointing for team members. People like myself, I've been on this project for six years. I want it to live up to the expectations.

I played Dark Age of Camelot since beta and the release was more or less smooth, but I wasn't exactly slavering to get into the game after having played it in beta for 3 months either. Like a total noob I took a week off work at the release of WoW, and WOW it was a freaking waste of time. That release was HORRIBLE. I don't remember any major bugs, but even being able to play for more than an hour or two after waiting two hours to get into the game was a pretty trying experience.

I don't want that for TOR, but if your game is actually good and you have a decent launch it will be fine. Throwing around "bug free" is just going to get them lambasted later because we all know there is no such thing in the gaming industry, hell, not even in the orange juice industry lol

Well, he will get ribbed about it the first time one of the several million players figures out something the ten thousand beta testers didn't.

I really wish they would stop saying that it would be devistating if the servers came down... and there were bugs in the game at launch.

HEY BIOWARE... there are going to be bugs at release... AND your servers will go down.
It is inevitable that these issues will exist but the gaming community will forgive you if there is communication about the problems and visible improvements made at that time.
SWTOR will be no different to any other game launching at this kind of scale.

It could be different, tho. Less bugs are always good (no bugs would be ofc awesome but impossible). With the 'earlier game-access' there will be even less issues with server capacity (at least, that's the plan, and that should work as well).

    "...and a bug-free experience"

So it's never going be released, then?
  • #6 Anvil
Just what I was thinking. If they weight until the game if perfect then it will never come out.
  • #10 Kraxis
I think he means crashing bugs, or bugs that halt your game by now allowing X or Y.

I doubt you can ever get rid of visual bugs, or exploitable bugs. But those are generally only going to show up at maximum playtesting, or in other words, when we all play. The first types are however considerably more visible due to their high impact.

    Charming... yes? http://imgur.com/r6WrI

Not very much info tbh, I don't really like the questions. I guess there are some who will appreciate some more insight into how the game is made, but I'd much rather we get more details for announced features.

Not a big deal, I guess some interviews need to focus on asking less penetrating questions to avoid the "we can't talk about that yet" line.

    Sadly quit :/

A nice read thanks for the heads up - Sado

Well since they have already waited past the life of this computer, might as well take the time to make it right.

I am thrilled how high Bioware's standards are for TOR and how they really want to release a finished project. Take all the time you need guys. I've been waiting almost 3 years, I can wait a few more months but please finish before January if you could ;)
  • #7 Jadrian
As much as I'd like to agree with you, some of us have been waiting 5-6 years and the anticipation is starting to cause permanent brain damage so if they can get the game out this year (which seems to be more then likely...) then we can all relax.

Anyway the article itself was an interesting read and I"m rather curious as to what the "best for last" topic is...

some have been waiting their entire lives...I believe I was born to do nothing else than play this game as a bounty hunter and become the most notorious bounty hunter of all time eventhough they didn't mention me in the movies that occurred 3000+years after this game:P
