Friday Update: Fan Friday and GamesCom 2011 Details

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update is a Fan Friday. Included in the update are two new polls, new wallpapers, and new Aurebesh forum phrases. Even though not part of the update, BioWare announced GamesCom details as well. GamesCom runs from August 18 and ends on August 21 in Cologne, Germany. New information and reveals will come out of the event and fans lucky enough to attend GamesCom will be able to get hands on with the Alderaan PVP Warzone and Origin Worlds. GamesCom attendees will also get to see demonstrations of a small amount of the recently announced Eternity Vault Operation.

As always, Darth Hater will be at GamesCom bringing you the news and reveals straight from the show floor. Look for our coverage starting next week.

Where did this Dec. 31st "hard wall" thing come from? Last I heard, Ricitiello said they were ready to push back into Q1 of next year as a worst-case scenario.

I also don't believe that Bioware needs to release every last little detail about the game before launch. I'm more than happy to learn things by actually playing the game. Sure, it's nice to know about large things like PvP, Operations, Crafting, Legacy, etc. but I like fun/pleasant surprises too

Because as of SDCC, BioWare started spouting the "Holiday 2011" thing. Anything after December 31st of this year is no longer 2011, and thus not Holiday 2011, so we're ruling out anything after that date.

Erm... some countries celebrate the holidays on into January...

I'm just screwing with you, dude. I doubt it will get pushed past December.:P

That's true, holidays can extend past Dec, I count New Year's among them, but at that point is would cease to be Holiday 20"11".

New Year's Day would be 2012, so could still be considered holiday, but I am thinking November.

Oh God, I'm going to hate myself for taking this to a semantics discussion...

Some holidays begin in December and run into January -- so they are considered holidays in 2011...

I knew I would hate myself for pointing that out.XD I still hope like hell that SWTOR will be out well before Christmas in America.

Man, in a matter of a few moments, the Forums and comment section of the updates will explode.

Although I don't think 'rage' is ever really an acceptable reaction to poor friday updates, I can totally emphasize with a healthy 'meh' that these probably garner amongst most people.

Back 6 months or so, much of the excuse for these small updates was defended on the 'we wont' release info until it's firm info', and such. At this point, that argument doesn't really hold as much, which I think is what accounts for the dissappointing reaction. There's infinite amounts of info that is now set in stone that they haven't officially released. Since the writing is done, that means all the stories are done, which means all the NPC's and their stories are done, companions for every class are all created, etc... Planet arc's are created. And none of that is really subject to change at this point...

Just my thoughts on why these updates are such a dissappointment...

I doubt you will see ANYTHING important that is story-related for SWTOR pre-launch, apart from curt character bios, and maybe a blurb here or there.

The videos they've shown us so far were singular scenes that lacked any context (we won't know the impact of those actions, or what led to them, until the game launches). We're just getting snippets of story, with most of the focus on game systems, or things people will be focused on at launch, like getting mounts.

I would love for BioWare to make the updates meatier, but I would never expect them to do that by opening up the SWTOR bible and evangelizing to everyone by sharing anything worthwhile on the plot lines in the game. They'll save that for launch.

They've been too busy worrying about GamesCom and Pax to focus on a good Friday update. A fan site/guild interview, wallpapers, and icons...... ZZZzzZzzzzzZzzzzZZZz
