Ten Ton Hammer Interview With James Ohlen

In an interview with Ten Ton Hammer, James Ohlen discusses cross-faction communication, BioWare's approach to having hundreds of the same companions running around in the world, shifting alignment at max level, what exactly players can do on their own ships, neutral alignment items, and more.

TenTonHammer: We are also curious about the banking system. Will players be able to share items between their own characters through the bank on the same server, or even across factions so long as it's on the same account?

James Ohlen: Currently no, you have to do it the old fashioned way through the mailbox, but only if they're the same faction. There are multiple reasons why we don't want the different factions to communicate with each other.

We had the big argument that this isn't like Horde and Alliance, we all speak Galactic Standard so we should just allow it. So we actually did allow it for a little while. The argument against it was that, what happens is people start saying inappropriate things to the other side. That's just the way it is when you're on a different side and you gank each other, people tend to say inappropriate things.

Guys,

Let's back up for a minute and clarify what's going on here.

Nothing has changed since San Diego Comic Con.

As discussed at SDCC, the decision was made to separate the general chat channels by faction. However, this decision ONLY affects the planet-wide chat channels such as "General Chat." If you're standing next to another player (local chat), you can talk to them regardless of what faction you're part of.

The only thing we removed, as already mentioned at Comic-Con, was the ability to communicate with the opposing faction across the entirety of a planet to avoid the issues (like griefing, abuse, and other factors which led to a very unpleasant experience) which we saw way too often in testing.

We discussed the option of hiding the global chat and defaulting it off, but ultimately the ratio of negative incidents was too high to justify that. The reasoning here is simple: We really didn't want to create a game option that essentially says "[x] Give me an 80% chance of having an infuriating and annoying chat experience," and putting the onus on the user ("you can just /ignore them") is not our idea of a quality game experience.

Removing planet-wide cross-faction chat radically reduces the amount of reach a misbehaving player has before account action can be taken. We'll likely add the ability to filter local cross faction chat as well.

Hopefully that clears it up a bit.

"So you might have a specific lightsaber crafted thats just for the Sith, that youll have to be dark side to be able to use."

I find the mention of "crafted" lightsabers very interesting in the interview. I was under the impression they would not be crafted.

Just because cross-faction communication is out (for now) doesn't mean Republic stooges don't understand the international language of tea bagging their corpse after I kill them.

Thanks for posting that update from Georg. They need to just have him and Schubert talk about the game, with Erickson talking about the story/writing. They give the best, most accurate info with clear and logical explanations.

This compromise seems to be pretty decent, and also lore-friendly. Now players can communicate with each other in person, but don't have access to long-distance because they wouldn't have access to, say, opposite faction radios or what have you.

Yeah, I 100% am on board with this decision. I want to be able to have a little smack talk and develop some rivalries, friendly or otherwise. But I don't want to be griefed (or be tempted to grief) someone throughout their playtime just because I was ganked once upon a time.

Gotta love Georg for coming in and settling the issue once-and-for-all.

Good to see they didn't change their minds, then.

    1. They didn't realize that player housing caused anti-social behavior before they put in player ships? Uh ... look at CoH and bases. Looks like a similar design.
    2. How come cross faction chat worked in Rift and FFA AoC and Bioware can't make it work in TOR? I'm just saying, Rift players from two different factions didn't have any problems and were even able to team up to complete zone puzzles together.

I feel like every time this guy talks, he's describing a problem WoW had in'04 and then the bandaid solution that Blizzard used to hide the problem. Flame if you want, but if they don't want WoW 2.0 or 2.5 comparisons, solve the underlying problem instead of using old school MMO design paradigms that weren't ideal when they were originally thought up.

The original concept of Bases in CoH was PVP. However CoH PVP had problems and base raids were even worse. So the devs said "screw it" and let everyone go nuts with the base designer.

It's similar to STO and walking around your starship. There's no bank, market, or mail access on your ship in STO so you have to go to one of the social hubs.

If you can't handle a little trash talk after ganking some one, then you shouldn't be attacking low level players.

Anyways, guess this method means there will be no KEK's

I never got the whole "Be an ass to the opposite faction bit", in City of Heroes the only time you saw that was in PVP areas. Since the PVP in City of Heroes wasn't that good, it wasn't something you ran into a lot. Granted, the endgame is "Hero teamup with Villain" and you can also faction switch. They also gave you the option to opt-in to cross-faction chat in PVP zones.

I suppose it's different with games with larger playerbases and more mainstream appeal.

BW just can't stand to give players the "choice" even in a game that promotes it. opt in/out would've solved any issues with griefing w/o resorting to the draconian method of disabling it for everyone.

Am THRILLED that they finally see cross faction communication as more of a problem than a necessary feature. I've said it all along that cross faction communication has the potential to cause more problems than the so-called benefits it brings to the table. Kudos BioWare!

I would concur in saying that things are tentative and speculative at this point. While I understand and agree that, from a PvP standpoint, disabling cross-faction communication is probably for the best, I cant help but wonder what their answer is for the roleplayers who are looking to interact beyond their own faction.
