GC 2011: Ten Ton Hammer Interview With Emmanuel Lusinchi

Over at Ten Ton Hammer, Star Wars: The Old Republic's Emmanuel Lusinchi speaks a bit about open world PvP objectives:

Now, with open world PvP, we have objectives that can just happen naturally you run into players of another faction and you can just attack them, especially on PvP servers. But we also have special places where there are objectives. Fulfilling the objectives will give you some tokens as well, which are different from the warzone tokens. They can be exchanged for each other, but not a favorable rate so that we encourage you to do both forms of PvP, but we dont force you to do both forms of PvP. The reason why we have objectives in the open world for open world PvP is a) to focus the player as they know that there will players on the other side who is trying to do this objective, which is great. Its a big universe, where do you fight otherwise? Not only does it let us focus them, it allows us to focus them in the right way, because if you put every player on the server onto one spot, it never works very well for many reasons: technical, gameplay, visual effects. It spreads them though the clever design of objectives and the clever design of what you need to do. It gives us control, but its also out of control because its open world.

Here's another pretty awesome interview with Emmanuel Lusinchi. His answers are pretty refreshing to hear, even if they're not chock full of new information.

    At there there is something.

Comparing to the GW2 info this is pretty sad, while I know they don't have things ready they at least could tell something new.

I was interested in GW2, but all those "GW2 experts", who appear on other MMO (not just TOR) game forums and video comments and bash on everything different than GW2, made me change my mind.
I don't really want to be part of this kind of community.

He just... did you not read the quote DH highlighted in the article? What info does GW2 have out that Old Republic doesn't? They've both had plenty of gameplay videos out, both PvE and PvP. I certainly know a release date and beta start are not among them, yet I don't see people raging over a lack of a release date for GW2.

I think he is referring to the fact that GW2 has 3 faction server v server v server event based PvP and SWTOR appears to have war zones and some token based world PvP.

Though, truth be told, we will find out a whole lot more this weekend. So I am hoping for some great PvP news.

Every day I wake up wondering "will this be the day where I finally don't have to hear anything about GW2?" and every night I go to bed disappointed.

I love this mentality I see of GW2 vs SWTOR, too. Liking one or the other always seems to make you someone's enemy.
  • #17 abner_ford
Seriously. I'm interested in both, because they're both different games. They have their own strengths.

I personally don't like cross-server PvP, but some people do. Oh noes! We must argue on the internet now!

I feel obligated to clarify, although I don't think anybody misunderstood me: I don't have any kind of problem with GW2. I'm just getting tired of hearing about it when I'm trying to keep up with TOR information and discussions. I mean, when I'm looking for information on GW2, which I have done from time to time, I go to GW2 sites and sources. I don't log on here for it (and it's not actually bad here....), or onto SWTOR.com, or on to youtube channels featuring TOR videos. But unfortunately it seems lately like a lot of GW2 acolytes are feeling a need to proselytize anywhere TOR fans congregate.

It's just a pet peeve. Just to give another example, I'm a big fan of both Dragon Age and The Witcher, and for some reason Witcher fans got really aggressive on Bioware's DA2 boards. Which ultimately turned me off to the game.

I just don't get it. I understand loving another game. But why the need to trash the one I love?

In the end, I honestly hope GW2's great, and that the people who plan to play it love it. Heck, I may end up playing it myself sometime. But the more people throw it in my face, the less interested I become. Which is a shame, because I think it's really a situation where people should be able to embrace them both, instead of picking sides.

They keep teasing us with their modification system. They say just enough for it to sound excruciatingly interesting, yet not enough to form any sort of view of it.

That said, it almost sounds like you can keep your favourite level 25 armour all the way up without losing too much stats. And I like the idea, we'll just have to see how it pans out.

    Charming... yes? http://imgur.com/r6WrI

more likely you'll have to change it out every 10 levels to stay "optimal". though like you said if you don't mind being a few percent downgraded you'll prob be able to keep it somewhat longer.

Think Warzones was the first paragraph. Level Matching and all that. Then World PVP later in the article.
  • #6 Kelrekk
Good interview now get back to work making this game great Emmanuel.
  • #5 Dreyder
It's unclear if he's talking about Warzones or World PvP in the frist part... cause then he comes back in the 3rd paragraph with "Now with World PvP.."... so...

Would be nice if he cleared that up
