PAX Prime: Day 1 Developer Presentation Live Blogs

PAX Prime: Day 1 Developer Presentation Live Blogs

We are live blogging all Star Wars: The Old Republic presentations straight from the PAX floor. As always, initial transcripts will be rough (and probably something incorrect), but we always go over the audio and video to deliver you full transcripts shortly after we receive the assets.

Just a note: there was a cache issue earlier. This is now resolved, but keep in mind it is best to go to the homepage first and refresh to see the latest feed during presentations. The second live blog of the day and video is after the jump, and the first one held at noon is available here with the full video as well.

Day 1 5p Live Blog

  • 5:01p PT - David Bass & Alyson Bridge on stage, splitting crowd in two. Giving away hats to the side that makes the most noise.

  • 5:04 - Gabe Amatangelo takes the stage to explain the backstory and rules of Huttball.

  • 5:05 - Flashpoints are 4 people going on roleplaying adventures together. Operations are 8 or 16 with varying difficulties.

  • 5:05 - Showing last Friday's Huttball video

  • 5:07 - Gabe back on stage for Q&A

  • 5:10 - Operations are high level story content. World bosses are on every world, which can only be defeated by several groups of players working together. Loot from world bosses not as good as ones from Operations. World bosses need 3 or 4 parties.

  • 5:10 - Target marking confirmed

  • 5:12 - Q: Can you change endgame armor looks?

  • 5:13 - GA: You can tell who is a badass at endgame. Sets for PvP and PvE

  • 5:13 - JO: We also wanted to make sure players looked like the characters from the movies. Yoda wears simple clothing. Mod-able items are available. You can mod a low level item into something more powerful. Level 8 robe can be modded to be legit at 50 so you can look like Luke or Obiwan.

  • 5:14 - Q: Benefits to being in a guild?

  • 5:15 - JO: Basic features at ship. Features like guild leveling later. High priority.

  • 5:17 - Q: How much storage space will you have?

  • 5:17 - JO: You've got a whole ship to put your inventory in. You can fit a lot of shit -- er, stuff in your ship.

  • 5:23 - End of Live Blog

    "12:29 - GA: No dungeon finder. "

Eh, once I got used to the dungeon finder in WoW it was an addition that I really liked. One thing I hate is the pain of trying to put together a PUG when none of your friends are online. This is especially true if you are playing a dps class. The dungeon finder in WoW took that headache out of the game and allowed me to spend my time doing quests or pvp while waiting for a pve group.

You only have to find 3 other players to fill a group vs 4 in WoW, so that should help. Also, I think in one of the EV videos, they showed a browser with players who could list themselves that they were interested in the operation, and the group leader could invite them, and the players could accept/decline.

I will say that I generally had better experiences in instances pre-DF as opposed to post-DF. But this topic has been beaten to death on the official forums.

I like an still like the DF in fact I wish they do cross sever DF. As the person mentioned you commented on was such a burden lifted with that.
I strongly disagree with BW taking a step backwards with this DF list of names. An ya I am sure its been beaten to death. I personally dont know how people consider it a community killer when in fact its a game an its suppose to be played not a social gather as if its Facebook. Eh well I guess this is why everyone is differnet. Likes an dislikes
Though I hope its added in the future

I completely disagree, it's not only a community killer, it's a civility killer. DF is a bad, bad idea, making a grindy game more "grindier" and making people hate each other if they don't finish things within 10 minutes.
  • #71 Blackpenance
True story... people have now come to expect having a group made for them, finish a run as fast as they can so that they can do it again. By passing bosses and encounters in the name of saving time to grind more dungeons. Once the dungeon is done everyone goes there separate ways and the process starts again. The idea of community is destroyed with system and is replaced with lightning ninjas that show up to grind a few more tokens or steal a rare drop when it happens and then he is gone without a trace. Every dungeon has a story and strategy, not just tank and spank, so it makes sense that bioware would want us to: take few minutes, talk to people, problem solve and get a group, and enjoy what they have spent so much time on. Honestly its not a race. Its a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying game.

"Trandoshan/Wookiee hate is alive and well." Will the Consular's companion Qyzen-fess and Bowdaar get into it if both players are in the same party? That would be great. Bowdaar will crush that Lizard.
  • #64 Night_Stryker
Nuh-uh! Qyzen Fess will eat that walking carpet head first! Then bask in the sun, and nap with his eyes and mouth open.

May he choke on a furball!

This was pretty lame, basically just a recap of gamescom. Hopefully we get some better info later today and tomorrow.
  • #24 Mongo
Coming from GC that was a weak panel. Hopefully they finish strong.

    3 hutball videos? 3 different?
All known or is it something i can look forward to see at youtube or somewhere?!

12:19 - Q: Will you be able to queue in groups of 8?
12:19 - GA: Not currently. Eventually might add multiple group queues, but they want to minimize premade "steamrolling."

Horrible reason. So now guilds have no benefit of joining a Warzone as a guild. Hope they change their minds else we'll likely not be participating in any Warzones.
  • #21 brewsteak
I thought the same thing! So much for a PVP guild, it looks like these will be limited to world PVP for now.

I'm sure this is one of those things where community input will be extremely valuable. I'll bet they fix this issue sooner, rather than later. What's more fun that stomping PUBs with your friends? :)
  • #38 Daelda
Perhaps they will work on a system to match Premades with Premades and randoms with randoms - thus avoiding the steamrolling issue. At least, after launch.
  • #23 Salsa30
Yeah, it would have been pretty awesome to get a "team" together and kind of build a rep on the server. It can't be that hard to implement a system that prefers that premades play against each other, and if no suitable matches are found, then the premades get stuck playing against pugs.
