PAX Prime: Day 2 Developer Presentation Live Blogs

PAX Prime: Day 2 Developer Presentation Live Blogs

We are live blogging all Star Wars: The Old Republic presentations straight from the PAX floor. As always, initial transcripts will be rough (and probably something incorrect), but we always go over the audio and video to deliver you full transcripts shortly after we receive the assets.

Next presentation is 5p PT and live blog is after the jump. Earlier 11a session is available here, and includes full transcript.

Day 2 5p Live Blog

  • 5:07p PT - Gabe Amatangelo takes the stage.

  • 5:08 - GA: We have Warzones, 8v8, epic Star Wars conflicts. We also have an esport focus. Huttball is our new Warzone that we're letting people play at the convention.

  • 5:09 - Huttball video.

  • 5:11 - GA: Tomorrow we'llbe talking about open world pvp. Fully featured, and you can PvP from beginning to end.

  • 5:12 - Q: Talk about PvP and how it is different?

  • 5:13 - GA: It is very visual. You don't have to look at a combat log. You see it happening. Very Star Wars-y.

  • 5:14 - Q: How does the loot system work (tokens)? Can you run 50 times and get nothing?

  • 5:15 - GA: You get commendations which are good for the last tier of gear.

  • 5:16 - Q: How do KOTOR 1 & 2 affect SWTOR?

  • 5:16 - JO: It is the inspriation for us. You will learn what happened to Revan and The Exile. And meet companions from the games like HK-47.

  • 5:17 - Q: Function of alignment gear?

  • 5:18 - GA: Mostly cosmetic.

  • 5:19 - JO: You also have artifacts in the world that require Light or Dark side.

  • 5:19 - Q: Are you worried about faction imbalance?

  • 5:20 - JO: It is always a concern, but so far we haven't had a problem. If that changes, then we'll look into it.

  • 5:20 - Q: Will there be multiple Huttball maps?

  • 5:21 - GA: Not currently announced.

  • 5:21 - Q: Different styles of healing?

  • 5:22 - GA: Sure. Operatives/Scoundrels specialize more in HoTs.

  • 5:23 - Q: How does character customization compare to other games?

  • 5:24 - Less than City of Heroes, more than the game we're not supposed to be compared to.

  • 5:24 - Session ends.

All the talk of min/maxers make me want to have a special server just for them.

    5:17 - Q: Function of alignment gear?
    5:18 - GA: Mostly cosmetic.

That's good. Makes it so that only the min-maxiest of the min-maxers would cater their decisions or farm morality points from Mission skills just to get a specific piece of gear. Making them cosmetic (preferably more than just a palette swap) is just fine for me.

I loved this interview great job guys.
  • #71 theunwarshed
please tell me this is tongue in cheekery: "The guy in the death mask is walking around he's like full PvP gear, and I'm like, you're level 15!"

"5:23 - Q: How does character customization compare to other games?
5:24 - Less than City of Heroes, more than the game we're not supposed to be compared to."

I'm going to call BS on that one. Say what you will about Star Wars Galaxies (god knows I didn't think it was much of a game), but character customization was pretty fantastic. I kind of understand why BioWare are limiting character creation options to a series of presets, but I don't really care for it just the same.
  • #64 davestr1zl
The "game they're not supposed to compare to" is WoW, not SWG.. and it has far more options than WoW.
  • #83 TheWatcherUatu
I don't know...here's how the conversation goes on the official forums.

Half of the posts are about how this game should be more like Star Wars Galaxies and the other half are about how this game should be less like WoW. So I almost think it could have gone either way, except that it makes much more sense in this context that he was referring to WoW.
  • #70 theunwarshed
lol, since TOR bares no resemblance (beyond the SW ip) in anyway to SWG he probably felt that statement needed no qualification.
  • #65 FaerieFyre
He was talking about WoW, not SWG. THAT is the MMO they're not supposed to be compared to. They've been avoiding the "WoW Killer" moniker for the past couple of years.
  • #82 TheWatcherUatu
Yeah, I know, duh--I figured it out sometime later last night. Sorry for being so dense.

"11:22 - Q: Alright so my question is, if I roll on one server, and if I roll a Jedi on the same server, can I send stuff between the two?"
    "11:22 - GA: No."

Bioware hinted theres a reason theyre allowing players to have characters of different factions on the same server "beyond convenience."
  • #62 lemric
that reason could have to do with legacy system if it involves unlocking races on opposite faction

assuming it makes in of course
  • #58 Holinyx
"Q: Alright so my question is, if I roll on one server, and if I roll a Jedi on the same server, can I send stuff between the two? NO."

looks like a typo. should have said "if a roll (a sith or a trooper), and if i roll a Jedi.....

so can you send stuff between same side characters, or is the No just for cross faction like jedi/sith.??
  • #60 keginkc
I'm 99% certain the no is just cross faction. They've (meaning the devs) talked in the past about how right now you can only get items from character to character (in the same faction) the so-called "old fashioned way", meaning mail.

(unless I hallucinated that. But i'm pretty sure I didn't)
  • #78 Socrates
Your not hallucinating it, I remember it recently.
