Friday Update: Smuggler Character Progression, Developer Blog, and PAX Prime 2011 Highlights

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update is three-fold. First we have a progression video for the Smuggler, stuffed with all the violence and lopsided smiles we can handle. Then there is a developer blog from on The Old Republic's expanded universe told in the pages of several books and comics. Lastly, a PAX highlights video is available for anyone who couldn't attend the event.

The Smuggler progression video follows the same formula as its predecessors, and highlights the different combat paths a Smuggler can take. Whether the Scoundrel or the Gunslinger is your Advanced Class of choice, you will have a variety of looks and skills to choose from, and it includes a particular homage to everyone's favorite archaeological adventurer.

We were also treated to a new Developer Blog by Senior Writer Alexander Freed. In this installation, he focuses on the expanded universe of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Freed has some key insights on what goes into developing these expanded stories from his first-hand experience of writing two tie-in comics (Blood of the Empire and The Lost Suns). He also shares what fans can expect from future adventures set in this era.

The first thing that any potential tie-in to Star Wars and The Old Republic should do is answer a series of questions: What does this story contribute to mythology of The Old Republic? What does a reader get from this story that changes the way he or she experiences the game? Does it give the reader a new perspective on a character? Does it explain a mystery that isnt resolved in the game? Does it explore the setting and the timeline in new depth?

Finally, we are treated to a video montage that highlights the PAX Prime event from two weeks ago.

But wait...there's more! A working dissection of the smuggler progression video is now available in the media gallery below. As with all dissections, we will not point out things we noted in prior dissections. More content for the dissection is coming throughout the day so make sure to check back at this post in the future.

As your character progresses through the saga of Star Wars: The Old Republic, you will see them advance as you unlock new skills and acquire or craft superior gear.

Whether running blockades to deliver vital supplies or evading Imperial patrols, the Smuggler must rely on his wit and guile just as much as the blaster at his side. As the price on his head rises and his enemies grow more dangerous, the Smuggler will have to acquire new skills and utilize more powerful weapons and armor to survive.

Get a look at some of the ways the Smuggler can progress and see just a small fraction of the weapons, armor and abilities that become available to him.

Every major show and convention we've attended this year has been a blast, and PAX Prime was no exception! Throughout the weekend, thousands of fans visited the Star Wars: The Old Republic booth on the show floor. They were able to spend some time playing the game, and many even had the chance to face off against other players in the Alderaan and Huttball PVP Warzones! Those who attended the Star Wars: The Old Republic panel were able to watch a live demonstration of the Eternity Vault operation. They were also the first to hear new information about open world PvP on the planet of Ilum.

The reception from the fans at the panel was extraordinary, and it was an incredible experience meeting all of the awesome people who made their way over to check out the game. The reception from fans makes us truly grateful to have such dedication and passion in our community.

We have put together a brief highlights video to share some of the fun moments from PAX Prime. Thank you to the remarkable community for your continued passion and support for Star Wars: The Old Republic!

This has always been the class that I have wanted to play, been waiting for this video to come out

There is something I don't really like: the gunslinger shooting down all enemies in the end. It's like reading a infiltration story and suddenly there is a WTF moment where the agent just shoots down 20 enemies at once. I almost expected the enemies to open the door and find nothing, and the smuggler is gone.

Also how did the sith warrior cut down such a big door? Usually they only cut a circle where only one man could go through at a time.

BTW, nice dark side corruption on the sith assassin. That looks really neat.

It looked like the Sith Warrior sliced down the door crease. Maybe he sliced the locking mechanism off so there's nothing holding the two doors together?

I'm thinking Smuggler will be my 2nd Republic class after Jedi Consular. Looks like an interesting class to play...also looking as if Trooper and Bounty Hunter will be the last two classes I'll be playing.

    1st Playthrough: Imperial Agent
    2nd: Jedi Consular
    3rd: Sith Warrior
    4th: Smuggler
    5th: Sith Inquisitor
    6th: Jedi Knight
    7th: Bounty Hunter
    8th: Trooper

Really, after my 3rd playthrough it'll be up in the air anyway lol. But Agent, Consular, Warrior are certainly my first 3.

That's similar to what I'm doing I think. Going to start with Smuggler/Gunslinger on the Republic side to get set up for my eventual Consular/Sage (telikinetic) Main. On the Empire side, rather than starting with Agent for the story, I'll go with BH for the variety in play. Then Sith Warrior.

    Something like

    Smuggler/Gunslinger (light)
    Consular/Sage (light)
Bounty Hunter/Mercenary (love that I can use 2 pistols like my Smuggler but have it play completely differently)
    Sith Warrior/Juggernaut (light)
    Sith Inquisitor/Assassin (dark)
    Trooper/Vanguard (light)
    Imperial Agent/Sniper (light)
    Jedi Knight/Sentinel (dark)

I give an order, but I can see me starting all 8 of them within several weeks of launch, and alternating several of them periodically. I also expect that I'm going to repeat some classes to go different alignment and AC. Want to play (at least) a dark-leaning Smuggler/Scoundrel and a light leaning Sith Inquisitor/Sorcerer.

I've always played lots of alts in other games, but this will be the first time it's an intentional decision, rather than something to do when nobody else is on.

"I've always played lots of alts in other games, but this will be the first time it's an intentional decision, rather than something to do when nobody else is on."
I've played alts occasionally, but this is indeed the first game where I'm looking at what order and when I am going to play then and how.

    Currently, my list is:
Male Agent - Operative healer (grey)
Female Inquisitor - Assassin tank (dark)
Male Jedi Knight - Sentinel DPS (dark)
Female Trooper - Vanguard tank (grey)
Male Smuggler - Gunslinger DPS (light)
Female Bounty Hunter - Powertech DPS (light)
Female Jedi Consular - Undecided (grey)
Male Sith Warrior - Juggernaut DPS (light)

This will all likely change within 24 hours, except for the Agent as the first class.

Loved the progression video! and agreed abner this game both one big mmo and 8 smaller supplemental games in one, though all of my classes will be darksided, which may hinder me finding a decent group on the republic but it will be worth it.

The PAX video evoked some awesome memories of Pax East back in March, swtor is and always has been the highlight of every pax since its announcement!

    SWTOR Character Names:

Wound in the Force:: Avinoam (Lvl 50 DS Assassin), Gurion (Lvl 20 LS Sith Juggernaught), Adomin (LVL 33 DS Sentinel),Achinoam (Lvl 10 Grey Consular), Tzahala (LVL 14 DS Trooper),Juliraus (LVL 9 Grey/Dark BH)

The smuggler video was, in my opinion, the best of the progression videos. Loved the Harrison Ford-themed scenes. As is my habit after every progression video, I have changed which class I want to play at launch.

Um very clearly he Battle rezs and stealths in combat..... I thought they said no one would be able to go steath in combat.... Maybe im wrong about this
  • #56 Kaiser
Looks like an ability similar to "Vanish" for Rogues ie. in-combat stealth ability.

They said that engaging in combat will break stealth, which is standard for most RPGs, but a vanish ability is very useful to get out of pickles.
  • #52 Burningchaos
Playing a Shadow first, but I think a Smuggler is going to be my 2nd playthrough now.
  • #50 Socrates
Not really planning on playing Republic anytime soon, but that Cad Bane gunslinger look is awesome!
  • #49 Kaiser
I love how they parodied the Han Solo Death Star scene from Episode IV, where he runs after some stormies and comes across a whole room packed full of them, and bolts out XD

Awesome video, definitely playing a Smuggler as my alt.
  • #39 DarthShnooky
The "surrender" scene, in picture 13; that thing on the ground that falls out of the Smuggler -- um, am i the only one seeing something remarkably dirty here? I mean seriously, look at that thing on the ground!
  • #47 RogueJedi86
Even though it's clearly a lightsaber, I'm reminded of the gag in "The Mask" where the Mask pulls a condom out of his pocket. "Sorry, wrong pocket." I saw that movie when I was 7, and I didn't get that gag until I saw it again a few months ago.
