SWTOR Release Date Announced at Eurogamer

Official Forums Statement from the Doctors

Drs. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk posted a statement on the Star Wars: The Old Republic official forums regarding the release date announcement.

To all of our Old Republic fans:

In 2008, along with our partners at LucasArts, we took to the stage to announce the development of the long-rumored BioWare massively multiplayer game set in the Star Wars universe. Over the past few years, we've pulled back the curtain and shown you why Star Wars: The Old Republic is the groundbreaking story-driven MMO you've always wanted, and how this game will change the MMO genre forever. We've given you a peek behind the scenes each week, showing you what it takes to create the largest MMO in development. Our team has traveled the world to give fans a chance to experience the game first-hand, and you've created an active pre-launch community larger than we've ever seen. Our Game Testing program has been a huge success, and thanks to you we have been able to achieve the BioWare level of quality our fans have come to expect in all of our games.

Today, the wait is truly over for a release date, at least.

It is our pleasure to finally announce to you that Star Wars: The Old Republic will launch on December 20, 2011 in North America, and in Europe on December 22, 2011. This is an incredible moment for everyone at BioWare and our partners at LucasArts who have dedicated the past few years to build this extraordinary game. We appreciate the patience from the millions of fans who have been waiting for the game's release. When we launch this groundbreaking MMO this holiday, we hope you agree that it will have been worth the wait.

May the Force be with you,
Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk
Co-founders, BioWare

i think they should save all of the back-slapping and over-hyped speeches until/if they have a smooth launch of the game and when/if they get solid reviews. it's nice to know the game won't be delayed until next year, but seriously, finally pulling the trigger on an overdue release date announcement is hardly anything to celebrate.

There is always a downer at every party (see post above). I think I'll just enjoy the fact a release date has been announced.

You're enjoying your day, everythings going your way, then along comes Debbie Downer.

ah c'mon guy's, there needs to be a little "hater" posting in amongst all the rampant syrupy fanboism. ;)
  • #117 Hardradi
    LoL :) . Fair enough.
  • #122 Elkesai
Who says it really won't be delayed? Now they just have a date they can push back if they needed to.

Not saying you aren't entitled to your opinion, but come on - if you go to a party, everyone is having fun, then you complain loudly about the chips, you can't expect anyone to respond any differently.;)

It's not about "syrupy fanboism"; it's about trying to enjoy a party, while a Debbie Downer keeps trying to bring you down.lol

Had I known they were giving away Beta access, I would have flown to London just for that, and maybe a bit of poker.

Hmmm, Blizzard announces that Diablo 3 is delayed until 2012, and a day or two later we get a release date. Interesting... :)

If Diablo III turns out anywhere near as lackluster as SCII, Blizzard would be better off not wasting anymore time. Once the shine wore off that game (SCII), the flaws really started to show.

My main thought was that pushing the release date back to 2012 for Diablo 3 was that Blizzard would have nothing to counter the release of SWTOR in December. How much rage would there be if they delayed patch 4.3 till December, considering its going to be on the PTR soon? Kinda makes it a nice clear window for launch.
  • #139 Jaramukhti
I do agree with that (specifically about WoW patch 4.3). There is no way in Hell that Blizzard can delay patch 4.3 to December; even if they wanted to. They've hyped it up too much, and have been pumping it up for weeks. The nerdrage would be absolutely epic if they held off that long - and they're already dealing with some declining sub issues, so they don't need to give people reasons to jump ship and try out a freshly launched MMO.

As of this moment, SWTOR isn't going to get any impedance from Blizzard - a rarity for a newly launching MMO. Diablo III is pushed back to 2012, Heart of the Swarm isn't coming out anytime soon, and patch 4.3 has been hyped too much, too frequently, for WoW fans to tolerate it getting delayed by many months.

If there really was a release date chess game going on - BioWare got the checkmate.
