SWTOR Release Date Announced at Eurogamer

Official Forums Statement from the Doctors

Drs. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk posted a statement on the Star Wars: The Old Republic official forums regarding the release date announcement.

To all of our Old Republic fans:

In 2008, along with our partners at LucasArts, we took to the stage to announce the development of the long-rumored BioWare massively multiplayer game set in the Star Wars universe. Over the past few years, we've pulled back the curtain and shown you why Star Wars: The Old Republic is the groundbreaking story-driven MMO you've always wanted, and how this game will change the MMO genre forever. We've given you a peek behind the scenes each week, showing you what it takes to create the largest MMO in development. Our team has traveled the world to give fans a chance to experience the game first-hand, and you've created an active pre-launch community larger than we've ever seen. Our Game Testing program has been a huge success, and thanks to you we have been able to achieve the BioWare level of quality our fans have come to expect in all of our games.

Today, the wait is truly over for a release date, at least.

It is our pleasure to finally announce to you that Star Wars: The Old Republic will launch on December 20, 2011 in North America, and in Europe on December 22, 2011. This is an incredible moment for everyone at BioWare and our partners at LucasArts who have dedicated the past few years to build this extraordinary game. We appreciate the patience from the millions of fans who have been waiting for the game's release. When we launch this groundbreaking MMO this holiday, we hope you agree that it will have been worth the wait.

May the Force be with you,
Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk
Co-founders, BioWare

Almost exactly a month later than I expected. Going to be a long, cold wait for launch. I don't think I'm breaking any game testing rules by saying this, but I was in the first testing weekend, and I'm *still* having a hard time playing anything else. There's a LotRO expansion hitting Tuesday, and I basically told an old friend ingame there's no way I'm going to waste a few weeks grinding levels in a game I won't ever play again come TOR's launch. So I guess it's back to KotOR, and now I have time to play all the way through KotOR 2 tslrcm.

Still, it's good to finally know for sure.

You know, I may replay KOTOR as well lol...I need a new copy of The Sith Lords though, that buggy game lol.

I haven't played KotOR 2 since it came out. I remember next to nothing about that game other than I hated the way it ended. Hopefully the reclamation mods will help some.

KotOR I started playing a few weeks back, had planned all along to replay before swtor. Kind of surprising just how playable it still is. I'm working through the Sith Academy right now, nearing the end of the game.

I'm not sure why I didn't think about this earlier, but the 20th is after Galaxies ends, isn't it. Wonder if that's a coincidence?

I'm happy. It will ship this year, even if it seems a little late. Better to get it right than put out a super-buggy game (and I'm still expecting minor bugs that'll need squashing months after release)

That's a healthy way to look at this situation.

I thank God every day for WAR; mostly because, I think that game showed EA, in a fist-to-face sort of way, that you can't rush out an MMO with an established name and expect it to just sell itself. BioWare is never going to have a "bug-free" game at launch (no MMO is "bug-free", even years after the initial launch). But if the bugs are minor, and the experience is fairly smooth, word-of-mouth is going to be gold for your game.

Luckily, EA has given BioWare time to polish, to add more features, to continue to improve; I'm not sure that would've happened - EA's new found patience - without the mistakes of WAR.

You also have to remember the 'mistake of WAR' was more Mythic that EA. EA came in and gave Mythic another 6 months of funding when the project was about to be scrapped entirely and the company shut down from bankruptcy. EA told them thats the best they could do, get something playable out. Sadly Mythic just bit off more than they could chew and promised things they couldn't deliver.

Either way it showed EA to give time and money to MMO projects if they want them to make money.

So much for the train coming down the track, this one arrived from nowhere like Doc Brown's BTTF3 locomotive time machine.

The date speaks to me of a development team anxious to keep promises made to the money men it would ship in 2011 and sure they made the "Holiday 2011" target but this is probably the absolute, last ditch, 11th hour latest they could have released within that window.

Also, launching at a time when a lot of people are on holiday from work and school invites even more server overload than would already have been the case putting even more pressure on support and infrastructure.
