Random House posted an excerpt of Chapter One from Revan, Drew Karpyshyn's upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic novel. In the excerpt, the reader learns more about the environment & people of Dromund Kaas and of Lord Scourge, the Sith focal point of the excerpt. As Darth Hater previously reported, the novel synopsis is also available.
"Unlike the humans that made up the bulk of the Empire's population, the Sith species were all blessed with the power of the Force to varying degrees. It marked them as the elite; it elevated them above the lower ranks of Imperial society. And it was a legacy that was fervently protected."
Sooo... why can you play as a Sith Pureblood Sith Inquisitor if they are former slaves in the story?
To quote the excerpt "A pureblood born without any connection to the Force was an abomination; by custom such a creature could not be suffered to live. During his time at the Academy, Lord Scourge had encountered a handful of Sith whose power in the Force was noticeably weak. Hampered by their failing, they relied on the influence of their high-ranking families to find them postings as low-level aids or administrative officials at the Academy, where their handicap would be least noticed. Spared from the lower castes only by their pureblood heritage"
I guess you could say if a family continually bred Purebloods with diminishing to no force talent that the family would slowly fall out of favor and could at some point be forced into slavery. OR better yet all it takes is one stupid family member to piss off one of the Dark Lords or to fail them at a task for their family to be punished for it. In Sith society failure is not an option and is usually punished severly...
Sadly the excerpt didn't really offer much in the way as to hints of the storyline for the book. It mostly gave you an idea of the writing style of the author and a little idea of what Dromund Koss looked/felt like.
Still looking forward to reading it. I think its a great lead up to the release of SWTOR. lets you find out where Revan went in between and how he affected the world we have to play in.
I did not realize the sith pure blood was Lord scourge. Seems like an interesting choice for a name considering the fate of Lord Scourge in the Return trailer.
