Electronic Arts 2Q FY12 Earnings Call

Electronic Arts held its Q2 2012 earnings conference call, where they discussed with their shareholders and analysts the potential revenue from Star Wars: The Old Republic now that it has a confirmed December 20, 2011 release date.

In the prepared comments, EA COO Peter Moore talks about the SWTOR launch and some plans for the upcoming testing:

Next, our biggest event of the year, the December 20th launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic.
This is inarguably the most anticipated game of the year, an epic MMO that makes each player
the hero of their own Star Wars saga. The Old Republic is in Beta right now and players are
blown away by the immersive story, dynamic combat and authentic Star Wars feel. In the
coming weeks we'll invite hundreds of thousands of players into our biggest Beta test to date.

I don't know what beta they are talking about, but it's not the SW:ToR beta that I know of.

" an epic MMO that makes each player the hero of their own Star Wars saga".

    - Really? http://www.hulu.com/watch/13828/saturday-night-live-really-with-seth-and-amy

"The Old Republic is in Beta right now and players are blown away by the immersive story, dynamic combat and authentic Star Wars feel."

    - Blown away? Most of the posts/polls I've seen over the last month have been along the lines of "well... the story is cool... I guess" then massive eruption over everything from crafting to pvp to the glorified loading screen that is your ship. Combat is clunky and slow at best. I don't think that BioWare really understands the MMO player-base. There are a lot of areas in this game that are very neglected or barely afterthoughts (crafting being one of the biggest). Right now it would make a decent RPG, but it's not that great as an MMO. I think that the IP and hype will drive initial sales but as the game currently stands BioWare will have a massive riot on their hands once people actually play the it.

Hundreds of thousands of beta invites... Well since this was info for investors/shareholders i choose not to jump ahead and believe right away that the numbers are correct or incorrect. Though from reading the entire phone conference call it sounds like EA is planning on working in a lot of Micro Transactions (DLC) to most of their games. I hope we NEVER EVER see an in game store in swtor. Or an online store like Blizzard did.

Hundreds of thousands of invites? Guess I still won't be getting into beta.

I'm not bitter just because I won't be getting into this one beta, its because I haven't gotten into ANY beta that I've ever applied for that wasn't a sure thing.

I suggest you sign up for patch betas with DICE then. I did that for Battlefield 2142, and boy was that fun. Free and open banter with the devs, challenging them to duels on the maps etc. I can't say I have had as much fun in the actual game as those weeks.

And it was pretty easy getting in.

    Charming... yes? http://imgur.com/r6WrI

Not if you're in a red zone, otherwise, this will at least up your chances. And don't be bitter if you won't get in to beta, you'll be enjoying the release more then anyone else because everything is fresh to you. (I know that doesn't help much now, but it's true)

Fry those servers! (I won't be around for launch.)

Why do people assume they are adding "hundreds of thousands" or Core testers? I think it's far more likely they will be "hundreds of thousands" of weekend testers. If it's weekend testers, it's not surprising. They have already sold 700,000 retail copies, add in the online sales and future advance sales and there will be between 1 and 3 million players at launch. It would be prudent to test hardware and game play bottle necks with 1/10 of that before launch.

Yes, that's how I think they will do it as well

Waited 3 years. Less then 2 months to go. I'd rather wait and play the finnished product at this time.

    I second that motion.

At this point, I'll be glad if a beta invite comes - but if it doesn't, I'll just look forward to seeing it all at launch.

    Just two more months...

I played in two Beta weekends. In the second weekend I didn't exactly feel like I was wasting my time because I was having fun, but I knew I would have to repeat that content sometime after release. At this point I would decline a beta invite, we are likely a month and half away from early access and I can wait. If you haven't tried Batman Arkham Asylum on the PC, go for it, it's pretty great and that's not a type of title I would normally play.

I forget, does participation in a weekend beta exempt you from general testing invites?

Cuz I was in the October weekend test, and I've got serious withdrawal now.
