Thanksgiving Beta Weekend Servers Are Live

In the unlikely event that you’ve been avoiding all news related to Star Wars: The Old Repbulic over the last two weeks, we have a small FYI for players: the testing servers are now live for the biggest concurrent test of The Old Republic in the game's history. Please keep in mind that with this many people testing at once, there may be server issues, crashes or queues to enter the testing environment, so be patient. Above all else, though, enjoy. Remember to share your experiences in the comments, on our forums, or with others on our Ventrilo server.

For full details on testing SWTOR, head over to the official Game Testing page.

UPDATE: It has come to our attention that servers displayed as full may not actually be full. Only servers showing an estimated wait time are not immediately available. Check for queues before abandoning all hope for logging in to your chosen server.

3 weeks 2 days til early access, already going through withdrawals.. Why do I have a feeling that the next 3 weeks are going to feel worse than the last 3 years? Foot in mouth

Another random thing I noticed this weekend is TOR's icon on your taskbar when it's minimized. What is it supposed to be? A Sith Trooper helmet? It doesn't look like any of the major icons BioWare has used for the game so far.

This game is so insanely good.

Obviously there's polish issues, balance problems and bugs. But the one thing that used to hold me back from advancing - that dull, endless grind, has now become the thing that keeps me going. I MUST know what happens next, have to know what happens to your teacher/companion/friend/collegue next.

The Old Republic drew me in like a typical BioWare game that just keeps going and going.

After hearing "Story" and the 4th pillar over and over again we all got a little tired from it. But for me, it's the missing element in MMORPG. I don't care what this does to the masses. I hope for BioWare it will be a grand succes. But for me personally, this game is simply awesome.

"...the biggest concurrent test of The Old Republic in the game's history."

Might want to remove the "game's" part:) By last count, there are 89 servers. That's bigger than almost any MMO currently (More than twice LoTRO), and WAY WAY beyond any games test. I think Rift had like 42 and it was an insanely large open beta. ( By comparison, we're talking about numbers that WoW didn't hit until over 7 months AFTER launch. )

    Impressions:

    •   I'm playing on a 5 year old Laptop, with minium specs, and I'm definitely playable once I turned down settings.  Not great graphics at this level, but good.
    • The verticality of the world sets it apart quite a bit from WOW, which I like.  Otherwise, it feels quite similar in terms of most gameplay.
    • I've got serious reservations about the cover mechanic.  Sure, as you get more familiar with it, it's sure to come more naturally to you, but the gameplay between the Smuggler and the Knight were worlds apart.  The knight was all action, and once you initiated, you could really take a beating.  The smuggler had to set up his engagements, and once you did, you didn't totally take out the enemies any better.
    • As others have said, the story and dialogue was really a huge point of engagement.  Kept me really focused on the gameplay.  in between, it's still hunt this and kill that, but trading in quests and getting quests is now much more engaging...
    • Although I was unsure before, the dark side is definitely going to be my preferred allignment.
    • Overall, very pleased with the small taste I got adn looking forward to release.  The difference between the Smuggler and Knight definitely cemented my desire to go with a BH Powertech and Maurauder over an IA as I'm not sold on the cover mechanic.

Really?  I'm surprised you had issue w/ the Smuggler, I played an Agent, and actually I played that toon way more than I did any other toon, I loved it.  I really liked the cover aspect, of course, I used to play a Sub. Rogue in WoW, so I'm kind of used to 'setting the state' for my attacks.

I'll prolly roll an Agent for my first toon.  Can't wait for launch!!!  Laughing

Oh I loved Imperial Agent, but while grouped with a BH it was somewhat annoying.

The BH with Mako healing him was pushing forward really fast. I on the other hand was spending my time rolling into cover only to aim my snipe at an enemy that the BH already killed.

I was often the last man standing in flashpoints. Partially due to the fact I was the last on the scene and struggling with cover while others were killing the enemy and were being killed by the enemy.

I would say it is a bit of an impediment and a waste of time as it is right now (at least on my old and slow laptop). Great for solo play, but in groups it just turns you into an outsider behind the lines unless you always run ahead and let someone else fetch the loot and clickable objectives.

    Shlomo,

Cover is a lot clunkier this build than it has been in the past.  I'd say about 1/2 to 2/3 of the cover points just arent working right now.  That being said, the class design is not for everyone.  If you're interested in blasters, but don't necessarily want to do the dug in thing the Sniper and Gunslinger does, you may want to consider looking at Commando or Mercenary.

How far did you get your IA leveled?  At lower levels you are more or less chained to cover, but  once you hit the 25-30 level bracket you've got access to, via the Marksman skill tree, quite a few things that allow you some pretty decent flexibility in terms of playstyle.  You can dig in and just blast, but at the same time you have the option of, with a little creative portable cover deployment and use, dish out some serious mobile damage.

thanks for the heads up.  The thing is, normally I would go for the 'dug in' style, I just found this one way too difficult.  That said, if it's not working as intended, that's worth keeping in mind.  Either way, I'll be going imperial, so it's really about chosing between the BH, the Warrior, or the IA for me...

One thing that's surprised me so far is that the Imperial classes seem much faster leveling in the early going. The Jedi Knight "beat up ever more Flash Raiders" story gets boring quickly and the Consulars powers seem very weak when compared to my Inquisitor, who is a killing machine that even puts my Warrior to shame

Compare and contrast from a glowstick addict

Re: JC being less powerful than Inquisitor, this is not true. The 2 factions are mirrors, so the JC and SI are identical.

Note that I said "seems". It might just be that I find shooting lightning from my fingertips more enjoyable than throwing rocks.

Hilarious bug: Khem Val started spouting Vette's dialogue after some combat sequences

Anyone try clicking Credits at the main menu? It puts up a lot of placeholder values and you can't hit escape out of it until they get to the scrolly credits. I got curious, wanted to see the VAs. Tongue out
