Friday Update: Sith Inquisitor Progression and Community Blog

We're only moments away from game launch, and for some of us, early access is right around the corner. We’ve had some excellent updates so far, and this Friday is no different. The developers have given us a new video, featuring the character progression of the Sith Inquisitor. In addition, BioWare announced the launch of their new Community Blog, which will be "a place to communicate the latest game status updates, community-focused news and developer thoughts as efficiently as possible to our fans." There was also a long developer post about color matching. Finally, Launch events have been announced in Austin, New York City, Paris and London.

Courtney WoodsFeared across the galaxy for both their mastery of the Dark Side of the Force™ and their ability to manipulate those around them, even those within the Empire know to watch themselves when in the presence of a Sith Inquisitor. Some acolytes who complete the trials use their newfound powers to channel the Force into devastating mental and lightning attacks. Others command the Force to deceive their enemies both in conversation and on the battlefield.

UPDATE: On a side-note, a few Intrepid SWTOR players found that the retail client includes the option for users to toggle in-game chat bubbles. Visit the link to find more information on it.

Emmanuel LusinchiFew of our systems seem to have generated as much passion as our 'Unify Color to Chest Piece' system. So, I'd like to shed a bit of light onto exactly what this system is, what happened to it and what is in store for it in the future.

Pretty much from the start of the project, one of our goals was to solve the 'mismatched color' issue that exists in many MMORPGs. This initiative has actually been driven directly by James Ohlen, our Game Director, as this is an issue close to his heart.

Now, it is useful to understand that when artists create a new piece of armor, they always create it as part of a set. A certain pair of pants, for example, is thematically meant to go with a specific chest armor, gloves, boots, bracers and helmet. If the players always put on full sets, they would look very good indeed and the colors from the different pieces would complement each other. Of course, at any given level, players have access to many such sets and wear bits and pieces from multiple sources. Now, in Star Wars: The Old Republic, we have created sets that, in many cases, are quite compatible with each other. You'll notice that, for example, Jedi Knight outfits use a lot of earthy colors that work quite well together regardless of which set they come from. Unfortunately, this is not always true – the Trooper is a good example of a class that does not look its best with mismatched pieces.

To solve this we created an option called 'Unify color to chest piece', which we also called 'Color Match'. Once turned on, the option automatically matched the color of any equipped piece of armor to the color scheme of the chest piece. This option was very popular with our testers and did solve the color clash problem, but not without introducing some issues.

While we have a policy not to give details on a system in progress, I do want to talk a little about the worst design issue we encountered with this system. As implemented, Color Match had a subtle but ultimately perverse effect: from the moment it was turned on, the player would perceive far less diversity in their loot. In some cases, to be honest, there are only so many differences we can create between two pairs of boots apart from their color scheme. Take away their color differences - thanks to the Color Match system - and you are left with a game that feels a bit less rewarding; where, sometimes, putting on your exciting new gear barely changes the appearance of the character. Depending on your personal preferences and your play style, this may or may not seem like much... but an MMO is a complex system of challenges and rewards and, as designers, we must stay vigilant in that regard.

So, anyway, the good news is that we are not only committed to solving the color clashing problem, we want to actually improve on the Color Matching system players experienced during Game Testing. The bad news is... well, this won't be in for launch. The system we are currently working on isn't quite done yet and has many dependencies. After taking a hard look, we decided it would be preferable to keep Color Matching turned off for launch rather than try to do a potentially messy post-launch conversion. If anything, the live changes we made during testing to other systems (like the cover system or the item modification system) have shown us how confusing switching things under people's noses can be.

This wasn't exactly an easy decision – we know how popular the feature is and how eager and vocal the community has been for its return. So, I humbly ask for your patience. The feature (or, to be exact, something I consider a better version of the feature) will return. The next time you find a particularly bad combination of armor pieces, take some screenshots - and hopefully in a few months (as always, no deadline is guaranteed), you’ll be able to tell new players "Back in my day, we had to wear those orange pants with purple boots! Uphill! Both ways! In the snow!"

As always, I’m very interested in hearing from you... I have (so far) managed to read every single post on the Item Modification system and will hopefully be able to post a follow up clarifying many of the concerns and questions that you have.

I'm not so worried about the gear, but it seems that they played stealth *way* down for the Assassin. Is this because they wanted to give it a substantially different flavor from the Shadow progression video? I know that the Sin in the video is spec'd for Death Field (aka not deception spec'd) but given how very large a presence stealth made in the Shadow video, it felt like they were intentionally avoiding it.

This Video is fail. They show a Assasin with Sorcerer gear. And a Socerer with Assasin gear. Looks stupid.

This is completely false for people who don't know the class. The armor types in the video are correct to the sepcs they represent.  Not sure where he got the idea that they are backwards....

Someone who reached level 50 on the forums told me that both advanced classes could get both sets of gear. The one the Assassin was wearing is apparently PvP gear.

Am I the only one who has to think of Hellgate:London when reading this?

It had color matching in (not only the chest piece - you could choose the color from any piece of armor you wanted). And afaik it was the first game to do so.

HGL introduced a lot of clever new mechanics that see more and more usage in other games now.

So more useless videos, they should have notified guilds of their servers today, instead of waiting to the last minute.

Yep, because a marketing trailer is directly related to letting guilds know where they're deploying.

Calm down, broski. The servers aren't even up yet. All you'd get is a worthless server name.

The early access is meant to make launch smoother, not so you can get your pointless world first tier 1 boss kill.

You say that like they're intentionally not telling guilds yet. I'm sure it takes a lot of work to set guilds up on specific servers that meet the server type requirements and the requirements of the Allies/Adversaries system(like if EVERY guild was connected via the Allies/Adversaries system, you'd have to put them all on one server, or make decisions on how to split guilds up that were connected through that system). It's not as easy as you'd think, and I'm sure they didn't hold back announcing the server homes for guilds when they had them set already. Do you really think that lowly of BioWare?

  • #28 Snuffy

They already stated they are announcing where guilds are going and what the server list is monday, so be patint.  honestly its not that big of  deal with all the communications guild s have available today.  If your guild cannot function due to this then it must not be a very good one.

Nope think they are the best gaming company out there, with that said, the way information is being put out is directly tied to EA's marketing department, they by now have everyones server assignment and the full server list, I would have liked to be able to update my website and get the server info out to my members today, sadly by waiting till the last second because nobody can interupt the brain dead blonde marketing major ie. couldnt take a real college major cause I am too stupid, so we must put any and all usefull information on hold for the friday update.  Remember the embarrasing E3 presentation, and the fall out post show, same thing, its Marketing not Bioware driving this.

So Color Sync's being dropped for launch, but they have a new idea planned for a few months post-launch. What could it be? It can't just be color sync I guess, since she said it'd be different.

I personally had hoped there'd be a checkbox for "Sync to..." in options, with a dropdown beside that for various gear slots in case you prefer the color scheme of your boots or helmet or whatever.

  • #22 chronium

The DCUO method would be suitable and still works with all the gear customization options that are in the game.

Just to clarify, Emmanuel is a He. Tongue out At least, he looked and sounded like one lol

Heplfull french tip: if it was spelled Emmanuelle, it would indicate that he is in fact a woman. (would sound exactly the same, but spelled differently, I know, we're funny like that)

Back on the subject, I'm sad it's gone, but I'm happy they're still working on something better, uphill, both ways, in the snow!!!

My bad, I should know better, guess I'm used to the females who post 90% of the TOR stuff on dev tracker lately. Courtney Woods, Amber Green, and Allison Berryman.
