What's Next for The Old Republic

As part of today’s launch festivities James Ohlen, Creative Director for The Old Republic, took the time to lay out the broad plan for the game’s future. Touching on nearly every major concern most players had had during pre-launch testing, the outline is well worth the read.

James Ohlen

Many of you helped make the game what it is today by participating in our testing programs. You’ve watched the game grow over the past year and have been very vocal about things you’d like to see in the game in the future.

A team is never finished building a massively multiplayer game, so we’d like to take this opportunity to reveal a little information on what the team is working on for patches coming in the near future. Our priorities have been, and will continue to be, based off of the feedback we receive from our players.

Welcome to Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. It’s been many years in the making and the team is very proud of what we’ve achieved. Since we’re an online game we are going to continue building on the game for years to come. You can count on us to diligently expand the game and service to surprise and delight you. We’re going to not only respond to your feedback, but also hopefully exceed your expectations on how Star Wars: The Old Republic will evolve over time.

A team is never finished building a massively multiplayer game, so we’d like to take this opportunity to reveal a little information on what the team is working on for patches coming in the near future. Our priorities have been, and will continue to be, based off of the feedback we receive from our players.

• New Content – We will be adding new content to the galaxy on an ongoing basis. These worlds will include Operations, Flashpoints and solo content.

• Guild Functionality – Guilds are important to the long term health of any MMORPG. We have a huge list of guild centric features. This will be an ongoing effort that will probably never end. Guild banks are the first thing we’ll be delivering in our plans for increased guild functionality. Eventually we even want to deliver on the promise of the long hinted at “Guild Capital Ships”.

• UI customization – You like choice. We hear you! SWTOR is all about choice. Being able to choose how you interact with an online game is something we feel is very important. We are going to be giving more control over the UI as an ongoing effort. This is a very big priority for us.

• PvP – We have an entire team dedicated to adding content and features to player vs. player. We have some of the most experienced PvP developers in the world on this team. So far very few people have seen, or know much about the stunning Open World PVP on Ilum; when you get to the high levels prepare to be blown away! In addition to that high level PVP content, expect new Warzones and new PvP features on a regular basis.

• Space Combat – We will continue to add missions to the space game. We also have a special project going on right now that will expand space gameplay in a significant way… for now the details will have to remain under wraps.

• Legacy System – The ability to select a surname for your character is just the start of something much bigger. Soon, the Legacy experience and levels you earn will grant your characters access to powers, objects and other cool benefits.

• And more – We have an entire team of developers working on future content. Right now we are focused on nothing else but Star Wars: The Old Republic, so expect new and cool things.

It is fair to say that we’re just as excited as you are about the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Not only are we launching one of the largest and most impressive games ever created, but we’re also excited about the prospect of continuing to work on the game so that you, the fans, will always have something heroic and amazing to enjoy. Thanks for playing.

God I love new MMORPGs... seeing how and what they evolve into is so exciting!

These hints are very exciting, indeed. Hopefully those secret space changes are substantial, and hopefully they come out by the time the first expansion does. Guild Capital Ships being named specifically is also a great sign.

I imagine UI customization and guild features are going to be first to come in patches.

Hope they bring back that match to chest piece feature back or something better sooner than later.  It blows to have unmatching gear on.

Blofeld, they've already stated that will be coming back. They are working on it now, trying to get it to where they want it. But, they did say it would be back when they feel it is ready.

Really looking forward to getting into the game and seeing all the stuff planned, it looks like a fun couple of years.

    Cheers!

Nice article and good hints for the Future. Laughing

Imperial Agent: Check, Trooper: Check, Bounty Hunter: Check, Smuggler: Check!!

Who needs force powers when you got a Blaster at your side. Cool

We are witnessing the beginnings of a new era, fellow Haters.

Perhaps there will be co-op space gameplay? It could still be on rails, the two or four players would just take different routes.

Perhaps in the future we'll be escorting our guild ships as well :)

One thing I'd like to see in the legacy system is "Crossover powers"

What do I mean by this? Say I level my SI main to 50, as a result, my Jedi Knight character has the option to unlock force lightning if he goes darkside.

Not a system their likely to include, but would be nice to go along with the "powers" they are talking about.

    SWTOR Character Names:

Wound in the Force:: Avinoam (Lvl 50 DS Assassin), Gurion (Lvl 20 LS Sith Juggernaught), Adomin (LVL 33 DS Sentinel),Achinoam (Lvl 10 Grey Consular), Tzahala (LVL 14 DS Trooper),Juliraus (LVL 9 Grey/Dark BH)

Nice! But I would've been more excited if he had mentioned improving character creation in there somewhere... People are very passionate about that subject.

  • #1 RogueJedi86

It looks like a shortened version of what all JO said in the IGN interview for the future of TOR. Still good, bullet point version without all the fluff.

I wonder what has top priority on the list(I assume guild stuff), though with multiple teams working on the UI and Warzones and Guilds and Operations and Space and such, we could get them all at once for all I know.

And still I have no idea how guild spaceships could work in the on-rails combat system. I dig the on-rails system, but guild ships would be hard to put into it.

  • #10 AgentCelric

Don't care how its done, a guild hang out just sounds bad ass. Maybe with it they'll allow us to group up and fly to operations or flashpoints on the capital ship. /win

  • #3 Klogg

Who said the guild capital ships will be on rails? Maybe the won't even move for the most part

  • #17 dekwa

a lot of fighting about who gets to fly it then :p

  • #9 Crushanator

Some people could be in engeering positions, and raise deflector shields effectively filling the "tank" position even though it's just one ship.

  • #6 Eid LeWeise

Or you all play in a Turret game say. Maybe even one person flying and a bunch of you in Turrets...
