With the game now officially out, fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic will likely experience space combat for the first time. Some, if not most, will notice that there is currently no support for a gamepad natively through the client of the game. Luckily, Darth Hater has an answer to that very issue. Using JoyToKey along with the help of a tutorial on Instructables, we were able to create a configuration file that will allow players to use their Xbox 360 gamepad in Space Combat. To assist users in the setup process, we made a quick video along with a small text guide.
Hit the jump for the video and text tutorial.
Note: You will need the JoyToKey software, our config file (right click/save as), an Xbox 360 Controller, an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver, and Windows for this to work.

Tutorial
- Download JoyToKey.
- Extract it somewhere you want it to live on your hard drive.
- Download our cfg file.
- Place it in the same directory as JoyToKey
- Open JoyToKey.
- Select our configuration file.
- Click the others tab.
- Set the ‘Threshold for input’ setting to 20%
- Play and have fun
If you wish to modify the default settings we used, you can change them at your leisure. We would advise visiting the Instructables tutorial for the specific key information as it can be pretty confusing without it.

Posted 12/22/2011 7:25:40 AMI am having a problem with it, i installed it fine, added the config from DB site, and it works in windows, but as soon as i go back into swtor it just wont do anything, if i alt tab to windows from there it once again works, so for me its having problems working only in swtor, its rather odd, i am also using a wired pad not the wireless one.
EDIT : I have sorted it now, it was simply becuase i wasnt running JoyToKey in Admin mode, so if anyone has problems with it seeming like its turning off when u try loading up SWTOR then make sure u have JoyToKey running in admin mode

Posted 12/21/2011 11:23:57 AMits going to be a lot harder on the higher end missions some of the level 40+ ones you have to be able to hit the 1, 2, 3 keys or you die plain and simple space bar also is much more of a need in the last 2 or 3 missions you get in the game
trust me they get a lot harder then what you where doing there

Posted 12/21/2011 11:48:41 AMYeah, due to that I went ahead and bound the left bumper by default for the cfg file. You also are able to bump up the sensitivity as you need it so it should be alright. Not saying it would be nearly as precise but i definitely didn't have problems on the harder ones at 40+.

Posted 12/21/2011 11:18:35 AMAlso for those that end up using it, you can adjust the sensitivity of the sticks by bumping up the number value of the -50, 50 numbers that lead the top of the list. 80-90 works well.

Posted 12/21/2011 11:12:23 AMWhy in the world would you want to use a controler for cursor based combat? The Space Combat would be horribly inpercise with a controler. It would be like playing a Star Fox game where the enemies are a third of the size on screen and in significantly larger numbers.

Posted 12/21/2011 11:50:20 AMI have yet to find a single space combat mission that I haven't been able to beat using it. I am currently 41 and doing among the hardest missions so I would refute that claim a bit. ;)

Posted 12/21/2011 8:46:59 AMIs this set so that the joypad only works/is active when you are in space combat? Or does it effect other things in game. I would prefer it that it is set to only work when in space combat.
I apologize if it was mentioned in the video, at work and cant watch it yet.

Posted 12/21/2011 8:16:17 AMIf you don't already own the hardware and don't mind using cords, the wired 360 controllers use standard USB plugs. They're a bit cheaper than the wireless models, you don't have to buy the receiver, and Windows automatically recognizes the things when you plug them in.

Posted 12/21/2011 6:52:28 AMThe first thing I noticed was your Imperial trooper armor. Awesome. Can you get that set in-game, or is that limited to the CE-store?
