Gabe Amatangelo Reveals Upcoming PvP Changes

Principal Lead PvP, Operations & Flashpoints Designer Gabe Amatangelo posted a new community blog on the official Star Wars: The Old Republic noting some changes coming to Player vs. Player combat. Specifically, he mentions the introduction of a level 50 bracket for Warzones, ranked PvP Warzone matches, stat tracking, and additional medals for objectives in Warzones. You can read the blog in whole below.

Gabe Amatangelo

Fellow PvPers, thank you for taking on the challenge of player vs player combat in The Old Republic!

In the first week after launch there were over a million Warzone matches played, with nearly half of all players participating in Warzones. Bad news for Republic players, though - the Empire currently leads overall, having won 53% of all Alderaan Civil War and Voidstar matches (across all servers). Huttball has been played the most, accounting for 39% of all matches – and yes, we’ll be adding a new same faction vs. same faction enabled Warzone in the future.

We are all really excited at the tremendous volume of participation we’ve seen in PvP thus far. Your interest and demand dictates what we’ll be delivering in the near future. I wanted to give you some insight into where we are with PvP development and where we are going.

First and foremost here is what we are addressing as a top priority:

Level 50 Bracket Warzones: Level 50 players will have a bracket of their own, playing in separate Warzone matches to lower level players. This is something we have wanted to do for some time and now that there is an increasing number of level 50 players we will be implementing the feature in January.

Open World PvP on Ilum: The planet of Ilum currently allows for open world PvP even on a PvE server, but the mechanics and incentives of the planet are not in as intended yet. We’re working on longer term goals for the planet and for other PvP areas, but expect to see some interim adjustments in January - such as more respawn points to focus conflicts, restricting Companion Characters from the area, and revisions to rewards. Ilum will also become a major source of Valor. Valor buffs will increase and decrease based on the objectives your faction owns. These buffs increase the amount of Valor you receive per player kill. However they do not give anything in and of themselves, so players will still need to defeat other players for significant Valor rewards. Additionally, daily and weekly missions will require player kills to complete. Player kills for quests and Valor credit will have diminishing returns per player killed. So, the more players that are fighting other players, the better it is for everyone.

Combat Gameplay: You’ll see several optimizations come online in January, and we are going to continue to tune this as time goes on.

We also have other exciting features coming in the near future including Ranked Warzone Matches, PvP Stat Tracking, Open World PvP Loot Drops, more Warzone medals for different objectives, Guard Optimizations and Target Optimizations.

Additionally we’re looking at ways to enable team vs. team, more level brackets and the ability to choose which Warzone you want to play in.

This is not a complete list of everything we’re working on that’s PvP related, but we have to keep some surprises for later! Thanks again for all your feedback and please keep it coming. We read as much as we can then cross reference with metrics to take action on features and tuning the game to ensure an enjoyable and competitive PvP community.

    Yes please.

I'm not so much for PvP but theese new changes actually appeal to me. In other games I have just played where the masses are and usally that interfere with my questing and leveling.

Good thing I took to my senses and choosed a PvE server this time since it's very easier to not be killed 6 times in a row when trying to reach max lvl but sometimes I choose to play a bit PvP and then I don't want a lvl 50 killing me point blank.

Who needs force powers when you got a Blaster at your side. Cool

I find it interesting, and rather telling, that this guys title is "Gabe Amatangelo Principal Lead PvP, Operations & Flashpoints Designer". Obviously PvP is NOT a priority for Bioware at this point.

Or maybe he's just high enough the ladder to be in charge of both dept....?

Do you think their structure is all vertical all the way up? I bet you expect them to have a VP of PvP...

Could this mean proper deminishing returns?!?

I can not believe the % of people which apparently don't know anything about the game (lvl bracket for < 50... really??) but QQ about everything. Serverdown only 3 instead of 8 hours... "damn Bioware I wanted to go out?!" People might find it hard to believe but it shows much greater knowledge to improve a steady system instead of fixing a complex one. Meaning, the basic game has to fit, then you add everything else step by step which I'm sure they already prepared long before launch. So those which "have the button on the cancel button" because the game has something not yet, give it a rest or just go. Please.

See people have faith in Bioware... the most expensive game in history will be strong with the force!

50s need their own bracket yes, but I believe there needs to be other brackets as well, as I've seen everything from 10-49 in the same PvP battle.

Different brackets for lower levels aswell? !No thank you! It didn't work for WoW, and won't work for SWTOR. Splitting up the the lower levels might sound fun for the shortterm to get even closer to give fair chances in PvP, while over the longterm it really won't be as enjoyable. You have to realise that overtime people decide that they have got enough alts, or don't really care for their twink anymore, and that's when you get gaps of Warzone inactivity at various level ranges. Which doesn't sound quite right if BioWare wants to let the 10-49 Warzones be an alternative leveling option.

I disagree, according to Taugrim.com, if you keep your gearlevel close to your own the bolster mechanic will make you able to compete with higher levels. (Not level 50 with pvp gear though)

So what? I continually beat higher level players on my 35 Marauder. They have the advantage of higher-level abilities, but even those can't possibly be enough to dominate you. Play smarter is all I can say.

I agree with the Level 50 bracket though, as they are basically in a league of their own with the Level 50-only PvP gear.

  • #8 Heaven's Agent

Generally this isn't an issue, though; levelling gear all scales to be about the same, so the difference between a level 10 and a level 48 in the same warzone is minimal. It's only when 50's begin obtaining progressively better end-game gear that the scaling system becomes insufficient to level the playing field.

Really suprising to hear these changes. I was completely expecting not to even hear of changes to pvp for atleast a month.

But to hear that they are already preparing a lv50 bracket, great news.

    - Allow 50s to use Speeders when OOC in Alderaan when they get their own PvP bracket.
    - Need more PvP maps.
    - Need more PvP objectives (specially for healing classes)
    - Need incentive to finish Huttball quickly (6-0) when one team is dominating (Currently the dominant team takes a lead and stops scoring and starts farming medals. This is bad for the game)
    - New Huttball maps would be awesome.

  • #16 schnopsnosn

Why would you end the match prematurely?

It also stops the losing team from farming medals aswell.
