James Ohlen Unveils Future Plans for Neutral Gear

Game Director James Ohlen recently conducted an interview with PC Gamer and a few interesting points about neutral/grey gear came out of the conversation, most notably its inclusion in a later release.

PCGamer

“We knew with the light side/dark side system that there would be an urge, especially for min maxers, to go completely light side or dark side. It happened in Knights of the Old Republic back in 2003. We knew it was going to happen,” said TOR’s game director, James Ohlen.

“We have a system for people who want to stay more in the middle. But that’s something coming up in a later release,” he continued.

“It’ll let you play a “Gray Jedi”. Basically you don’t need to go to the extreme to get rewarded. You can have a different playstyle. We like to call it the “Gray Jedi” playstyle. That’s coming in a future piece of content.”

This should give neutral/grey players something to look forward to soon. To read the interview in full, head over to PC Gamer.

I'm at 6600 Dark and 850-900 Light. I enjoy being a classic psycopath sometimes, but not when it doesn't make sense. I always put the interest of the Empire before me, though. So sparing the furries on Corellia and make them defend Imperials instead of wiping them out, makes more sense to me.

Oh, thank God I am not going to be forced to pick a side. I've been playing my Operative as a pragmatist, and half of the Light and Dark Side choices are just idiotic in the big picture. No, I am not going to spare Republic soldiers who knew that they were instigating a Galactic conflict, but I will not poison an entire Imperial settlement just because an insane Sith wants me to. I could maybe justify extreme douchiness with an Inquisitor that craves power over everyone else's wellbeing or a Jedi Knight that blindly does good everywhere he goes, but I am an Agent whose job is to subtly influence the Galaxy toward stability.

let's give two "Meh, whatever" for the Neutral jedi, who will stop at some things to put themselves smack dab in the middle... maybe.

    Wait... what?

I realize that in game terms, people who prefer neither LS or DS need options to avoid the mindset of "choose only LS or DS to benefit," but it does sound kind of funny...

I turned off all alingnment indicators, so my answers won't be influenced by them. The result: I'm over Light 4 at lvl 38. Of course, playing a jedi, it's not that surprising.

My friend plays a trooper, and was really into the thought that "I won'T be that goody-two-shoes, staying in the middle". Now his character is around light 3.

Simply: if you really play the choices of the character and not just "whatever gives me the point I need", and the character is a not a complete asshole or a homicidal sadist, simply cannot be Darkside enough.

Of course, for a sith, the homicidal and sadistic part is absolutely in character so thats easyer to work with but still. If you tries to play the cold, calculating evil, not the one who's path is covered with corpses... you'll easily end up at the light ^^°

I planned to play a neutral inquisitor, but am ending up slightly light (around 1400 at lvl 26). Most of the dark options are just non-sensically evil for a character with some someblance of a conscience that is not totally slefish or power mad. Nevertheless, Im intrigued at what they will do for this.

Also, I hope they actually roll out some chest and leg armors based on alignment - gloves and shoes are practically pointless alone.

I'm stting capped at 10000 light / 10000 dark, making me 0 neutral

Gray gear can't come soon enough. If I knew I was gonna get kinda shafted on relics I would have forced one side or the other I guess.

I've not even bothered looking at Alignment gear since finding out the vendors have nothing for my Marauder.

    It can't come soon enough.

My Agent ended up at around 500 Light points. Some of the LS or DS options are simply downright stupid, and I refuse to play stupidly to gain some points. Not to mention that stupid options are often boring options as well. I play to have fun so sometimes I will pick stuff that will lead to more interesting or longer conversations.

Heck, even my Warrior that I intended to be a real douche is sitting at a comfortable 200 Light at level 20. Some options are just not worth the points.

But I agree, more alignment stuff in general, make it worthwhile (though I must admit that the Light boots for hte Agent at the Fleet vendor look quite nice).

That difference really doesn't matter all they do is subtract from your dark side points to reach your next dark side level. Its when your ls/ds points are around the same, like 2000 light and 2000 dark where it hurts at the moment.

well, sayint that not getting titles for being neutral is a bit like saying that its wierd that youre not getting famous for doing nothing special :/

Nothing special? A neutral character goes through the exact same things everyone else does. We take the same tough decisions and put even more thought into it, given going full one or the other side is pretty much auto.

Titles that would fit Neutral "the Deliberate", "the Unwavering", "the Unbiased", "Judge", "the Calculating", "Broker", "the Pragmatic" and variation of that theme. I'm sure that my 2 minutes of thoughts can be advanced considerably. But the point stands, being Neutral doesn't make your action any less thought out or less determined. I would personally say they are more so, given that you weigh up the possible actions and choose the most advantageous rather than just go with emotions (DS) or blind compassion (LS) every time. But I guess there should indeed be a special title for ending up with only DS or LS "the Stupid".

My Agent is at 50, and sits at 500 Light, that is Neutral, I don't look at my total Light or Dark, only the balance as that is the only thing that seems to matter. So yes, that is the very situation I'm in. And by now I'm more or less comitted ot staying there. No point in grinding hard to get Light or Dark points only to sit at II when Neutral gear arrives, and thus only have access to level 30'ish gearlooks.

Also, something worth noting. As Ligh or Dark you gain titles, but you don't as Neutral. Spam alignment points ftw...

Yeah, I always felt a -little- cheated leveling my bounty hunter as grey. Could never use any of those relics. Got both of mine a while after hitting fifty (BBB cube, and one from false emperor). Looking forward to seeing some more grey loot.

That's great news - I have been playing a Light-side Jedi and a Dark-side Sith, but all my non-Force users remain in the neutral area, meaning they haven't been able to get the best stuff available to them. I knew they were going to implement this eventually, though, so I haven't worried about it.
