Design Notes: Game Update 1.1 James Ohlen Blog

Shortly after the deployment of today’s Game Update 1.1, James Ohlen posted his own community blog detailing design notes on the update along with a tease on future content.

James Ohlen

This first Game Update will show everyone how serious we are about expanding Star Wars: The Old Republic, and there’s much more to come. We have another major update planned for March and future content arriving throughout 2012 and 2013. We plan to release new Operations, Flashpoints, Warzones, Space Missions, single player content, vehicles, and companion characters. We’ll always be improving our existing game with additions like guild banks, PVP ranked matches and interface customization. Our Legacy system expands in March, bringing more options and a new level of depth to the existing character classes.

Our Game Updates will also include bug fixes, balance changes, performance improvements and exploit-proofing based on your feedback. We review reports from the community every day and compare them to gameplay metrics, QA bugs and our own experiences in the live game—where we’re playing right alongside you. Although we already address critical issues during our weekly updates, the major Game Updates will implement some of the most sweeping changes and fixes.

Expect a few surprises between these Game Updates, too. You never know when the Republic might strike Dromund Kaas, if a mysterious alien fleet could appear in the Core Worlds… or when the Rakghoul plague of Taris might infect the rest of the Galaxy. Changes are coming, and they’ll affect everyone.”

TOR runs 100x better after this patch on my machine, no idea what it was but color, texture's etc look great.  It should noted that I'm running it on a partitioned harddrive on my iMac.

This is indeed interesting. And to all those who whine and compare to WoW....let me tell you this, if you haven't understood it before.

WoW was not a new entirely inovative MMO. It took all the good bits and pieces from ealier MMO's such as EQ and earlier. No one has reinvented the wheel, and there is no need for it.

BW has imho improved and added to the MMO-template which to me is something that WoW (using it as an example since it is the single most successfull MMO still) made far to late or even at all.

BW has a outstanding growing MMO on their hands and nearly only a month after launch they have and are still improving it based on our descires, ingame glitches/bugs which they never could foreseee before the servers where populated by us. Also, this game is playable and has been from launch....not many MMO's can boast this feet. So therefor I am really looking forware future content updates and world events. BW has, at least what I think, made a very good MMO and delivered it in a awesome IP's box. They do justice to the Star Wars franchise and has satisfied and exceeded many of my expectations. So , read my first passage in this post a few times again and maybe, just maybe the Force will guide you to understanding.

    J. O. : We give you free bananas

random Flameboy: I DON"T WANT BANANAS, I WANT APPLES

    J. O: well you might get apples with a major update

random Flameboy: BUT I WANT APPLES WHENEVER YOU GIVE FREE BANANAS OR /RAAAAAAAAAGEQUIT

seriously... if people could earn money with flaming, 70% of forum people would be milionaires. I think there should be a Comic from Steve showing Republic player getting ganked over and over with a speech bubble (I want to finish my daily, leaving Ilum is NOT an option).

    "balance changes" hmmm

"You never know when the Republic might strike Dromund Kaas, if a mysterious alien fleet could appear in the Core Worlds… or when the Rakghoul plague of Taris might infect the rest of the Galaxy."

So basically SWTOR will get a copy of the pre-xpac WoW events.

Doesn't even seem like they are trying anymore (see Ilum for more info).

You, sir, are an idiot. This is the same as someone offering you the choice of free muffins in any flavour available, and then you complaining that they don't have YOUR flavour. It is this kind of moronic "entitled" thinking that kills all concepts of new ideas.

Go play something else if all you're going to do is complain about what is, in essence, a great step forward for MMO development.

  • #13 Kaiser

Agreed. Don't know why I bother, really.

    Quote for justice.

Although you shouldn't waste your time replying to someone whose first MMO experience in life is WoW and therefore believes everything starts and ends with WoW.

They said these are between the big updates, as in the updates that aren't part of expansions, which means this is exactly NOTHING like the pre-expansion ramp-ups WoW had.

I wonder how the Republic are going to get to Dromund Kaas when they are all freezing on the ground in Ilum.

Oh noes! "a mysterious alien fleet could appear in the Core Worlds" .... Vong confirmed.

You don't even know how much I'd squee if a Vong Scout Force was in TOR. Make it a one-time scouting expedition that is wiped out quickly, on a small scale like the Kaon flashpoint. Canderous' encounter with a Vong ship in an asteroid belt was all the tease I needed. I've been sorely disappointed at the lack of Vong in videogames since the NJO, given their impact. Just give me a tease, like how Rogue Squadron had the bonus battle against the World Devastators on Mon Calamari straight from the Dark Empire comics.

But that's why it'd only be a scout force, VisceRogue, and one that would be wiped out before they could report back, delaying the Vong's efforts for thousands of years. After all, Canderous saw a lone coralskipper just a few hundred years before TOR, so the Vong are here in small numbers. Their presence in TOR would just be a one-off thing. One of the early NJO books already established that Vong had scout forces on worlds like Bimmiel as early as 50 years before the NJO, sometime in the middle of the prequels. Why not an early scouting force a while before? Any presence can be handwaved as lost to history, like the Chiss' involvement on the galactic stage in this era.

But mostly I'd just love to see the Vong in ANY SW game, with TOR being the only SW game of note that is out(and LucasArts having no announced games at all in production).

I would actually prefer NOT to see Vong as that would bust current EU stories. If the Vong patrolled the galaxy during the Old Republic era it would be a whole different story... they would have found the Sith a worthy ally to partner with or exploit. They had no such powerful force in the era of the books.
