Dual Shockers Interview With Cory Butler

In an interview with Dual Shockers, BioWare Live Producer Cory Butler talks about the present and future of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Among the topics discussed are prioritizing development work, Easter eggs in the game, the appearance of hooded armor, faction balance, and new features coming in the near future.

Dual ShockersDual Shockers: Some servers have a faction balance that seems quite skewed one side or another. Is there any future plan to give local advantages to the outnumbered faction in order to encourage them to come out and fight against the odds?

Cory Butler: We are hyper aware of server populations and faction balances on the servers. As far as what we’re going to do about that, it’s something we’re keeping up our sleeve right now, but I can tell you for sure that we are looking at that very seriously and we’re coming up with a plan of action there.

If they offered a paid service to go from Empire to Republic, I'd probably do it for my 50's. I like the Republic gear/classes/abilities and the Empire leveling stories.

I just could not force myself to play JK or JC after playing all the empire classes.... tried consular first, the story is lame imho /you are getting medicine for granma /, and most important of all, armors are horrible! Same goes for JK... played sentinel and had to look realy hard for an orange smuggler medium so I can wear that... all armors, even the high level ones, look like bland bath-robes! When you look at the kotor games or comics or clone wars, there are some awesome jedi armors, but the design team for the jedi classes just did a horrible job... add to that the "big butt" bug, and the armors are fail. Empire side is just plain awesome when it comes to armors, especially the higher level agent ones look amazing.

As a 50 Sorc I have to say that both my story and my armor are rather lackluster beyond the first act. Currently I look like a the love child of a KKK Grand Wizard and The Wicked Witch of the West.

I played alli in wow, was dead set on imperial until I actually played the game and now am Republic main. I think once the game matures it will not be as drastic of number difference on the 2, but Imperials will probably always be higher because so many people want to be the bad guy.

Well, judging by the comments, I guess there is a low correlation between WoW faction preference and TOR faction preference

They are still refusing to acknowledge yes or no for future, multiplayer space combat.

Well, if they haven't said no, we don't know if it is no. the uncertainty kind of sucks, but I can see why they wouldn't want to get people's hopes up just to dash them later like some MMOs have in the past.

Until they come out and say multiplayer won't be there, best thing to do is say your two cents and then move onto other things.

Empire all the way!  Freedom to do what I want.  Plenty of sex and bloodshed.  I can be nice if I want and not get punished for it!  Who would want to be a Jedi Space Monk?  No sex, little violence, no fun.  The Jedi are ascetics.

I played almost every character on both sides during beta.  The Imperial stories are soooooo much better than the Republic story lines.  The Republic story lines are downright boring by comparison.  I'm not surprised there is faction imbalance at all.

Played exclusively Horde in WoW, so far exclusively republic in SWTOR but will probably roll Imperial alts to see the stories.

played both sides last 7 years in wow. main is empire

I'm curious when it comes to the factions.  I wonder how many Republic players were former Alliance players and how many Imperial players were former Horde players.  It would be interesting to see if there is any correlation or if it is merely a figment of my imagination.

I played Alliance in Vanilla WoW, Horde in Burning Crusade, and then Alliance in Lich King just for a change of pace.  I have a level 50 imperial agent and am working on leveling a smuggler to 50 (currently 15).  It's been interesting to see the story from both factions point of view.

Played all alliance in WoW, am all Sith in ToR.

I played Horde through out every patch in wow vanilla -> cata. And I'm all republic. We horde pvp people know what its like to have to go through long que times to due to faction balances. I feel a lot of us saw the imbalance before anyone else did in this game and rolled appropriately. Me speaking for myself and all the people I play with of course. As of right now we love the warzone ques. And sticking together we have no problem on Ilum as a group.

I do think a lot of people assume most Horde players would go Sith when to be honest being horde back back in the day was the punk rock thing to do, and I think some of the old heads feel republic is more aligned with that since there a thousand red faced siths named Darth Angry, being the status quo.

All Sith? What about the non-Sith classes on Empire? Big pet peeve of mine when people say Sith when they mean Empire. All Sith are Imperials, but not all Imperials are Sith. I have an Imperial Agent, and he is most definitely not a Sith. Directed at termoil2 too. Just a pet peeve of mine. It's like saying Jedi to refer to all members of the Republic(I have a Jedi Trooper!), even if the Sith have much more influence in the Empire than the Jedi do in the Republic.

And to be on topic, I played Alliance in WoW, Empire in SWG, and Republic in TOR(34 Vanguard) with an Imperial alt(a 17 Sniper). I play both sides, but I favor the Republic.
