Community Q&A 2/24/2012

BioWare released their weekly Community Q&A today with a look at some features coming in patch 1.2 and beyond. Questions range from big such as streamlining travel in game, to small such as adding new player emotes. If you'd like to ask a question for next week's Q&A session, visit the official thread here. The thread will close on February 28 at 2pm CST (8pm GMT/9pm CET). Hit the jump to see this week's Q&A in full.

Chyp: Can we expect to see any animation/damage timing consistency changes between factions?

Georg ZoellerYes. The animation team has been working on a new set of animations for abilities like the Trooper's Mortar Volley to provide closer matching of animation timings and improved combat responsiveness. We expect to roll these changes out with Game Update 1.2.

Zennis: Has there been any discussion to streamlining the Space Port process? Perhaps allowing speeders in the Space Ports besides the Fleet?

Brian AudetteWe've absolutely heard what the fans are saying and have been exploring options to address these issues. While we are still investigating allowing speeder use in Space Ports, we've also been looking for other ways to get people from point A to point B with greater haste. One such feature will specifically affect planets that have Orbital Stations instead of Space Ports such as: Tython, Korriban, Hoth, and Belsavis. We'll be adding an option for players to go directly to their ships from the surface shuttles as opposed to having them run through the Orbital Station to their airlocks. This feature and some additional tweaks will start showing up in Game Update 1.2.

deusBAAL: Will you be providing a LFG tool? What will be its features? How will it be intended to work and when can we expect it to go live?

Daniel EricksonWe are hard at work on a much more robust LFG functionality that will quickly help put groups together while still offering the flexibility to decide how you group and what sort of people you want to be grouped with. We’ll release more details as we get closer to release.

LthalSavy: Will there be any way to implement a quick travel to your ship?

Georg ZoellerNot in the short term, but it's something we've been discussing on and off. Currently, given how easily available fleet travel passes are on the Security Vendor, we don't think adding this is necessary.

IsACoolGuy: Will any new emotes be added to the game? The Jedi/Sith meditation thing that NPCs do looks pretty cool, will emotes of that nature become available to players?

Damion SchubertWe do have some new emotes planned. Even cooler, we now have tech that allows us to grant emotes as rewards for various game systems. In Game Update 1.2, we have several emotes planned as unlocked rewards of the Legacy System. My favorite is the special dance that is so inspiring that your companion feels the urge to boogie down with you.

TrueDND: Currently, the incentive to choose other Crew Crafting Skills outside of Biochem is minimal due to the fact that, once you reach max level, all gear that is acquired through PvE and PvP is better than all crafted equipment and mods (mostly through the Commendation and token vendors). Is this being looked in to?

Georg Zoeller

Absolutely. With the upcoming Game Update 1.2, we are adding endgame crafting for all professions. This includes augment crafting, the ability to crit-craft custom (orange) gear with augment slots, new endgame schematics, new color crystals, expanded and improved research and reverse engineering and much more (we're up to 4 pages of crew skill related patch notes in 1.2. alone)

Combined with new features such as the ability to extract base-mods from purple items (including the set bonus) and the improved color matching feature, crafters of all professions will find themselves in a lot of demand once the update hits.

Toxin_Polaris: Do you plan to have mini-games like swoop races or pazaak? And if so what is the priority for this? Can we expect them this year?

Damion SchubertWe love mini-games, especially the ones that speak to the heritage of KOTOR. When would something like pazaak make its way to you? Hard to say - it's not on our immediate horizon, and we'd most likely do it at a point where we want to make a large splash.

Twaggy: I find it troublesome to compare mods/enhancements/armoring/hilts/crystals that are installed in my armor or lightsaber. Will you be implementing something that lets you see the stats of what you have (like the comparability you can do of the boots - boots or jacket - jacket)?

Georg ZoellerThis is a convenience feature on our list of things to look at once the higher priority UI features and community requests have been addressed. We definitely think it’s a good idea, but where it falls in terms of prioritization makes it impossible to give you an ETA at this point.

TheJestersHat: What is BioWare planning to do about performance issues that people get with Warzone, open world PVP, and general FPS issues?

Damion SchubertWe have an internal strike team that is fully devoted to ensuring that the game runs better and faster, especially on low end machines, and we consider this team's work to be a crucial internal initiative. You should see evidence of this work as soon as Patch 1.1.5, when we will be introducing a new 'very low' setting to shader quality, which should drastically increase the number of mid-to-low machines the game can run well on, especially in Warzones and Operations.

Frung: Have you considered adding a "companion" loot roll option?

Damion SchubertWe've discussed it and have a design for it - when we do this, we will make it so you can only roll 'need' on items that your advanced class is meant to use in one of its specs. I do not currently have an ETA on this feature.

Belthazaar: I like my ships but, I was wondering if or when we will be able to purchase, make, or steal a new and different ship beyond the one that we currently get from our class quest?

Damion SchubertUnfortunately, the nature of our ships as central story areas for all of our class content, and all of the associated triggers and cinematics that must therefore be done on the ships, means that giving players new ship models, particularly interiors, is very, very hard for us. We will probably look at addressing this instead by providing a greater sense of ship customization at some point well in the future. But it’s someplace we definitely want to go!

I hope they dont add same sex romance into swtor, It makes no since.

  • #35 HarryLongNguyen

I am totally 100% agree with you that BioWare shouldn't add same gender romance in SWTOR. 5 hours ago (since I write this) I just start a thread on swtor.com forum. It name is "Same Gender Romances denial" and guess what. 10 minute later the moderator close my thread because it's not a constuctive disscusion. I have never like BioWare at all. Also I have been searching for people who have the same thought at me and I am very happy to see you post. That mean I am not alone in this

  • #29 BludLust

Really?  You're worried about something that won't effect your gameplay at all?  You're worried about how other people that you don't know, or will never see, how they play their game?  Having same-sex romances takes NOTHING away from you or your game play.  Plus it adds to someone who does want it.  Meanwhile, not having it although still doesn't take anything away from your game play, takes away from those that want it.

In short ... Having same sex romances is Win for the Minority, and Win for you since you can still play the game the way you want, and it won't effect you AT ALL.

Not having it is Win for you, but a loss for others.  Stop being selfish and pushing your own beliefs on everyone.

Besides, even a straight male gamer wants to see some girl on girl action.  HA!!

  • #33 wrathsizor

OH hey bud obviously your one of those people who do not read or pay attention to whats going on and just gets red eyes. I am glade your in the minority and people like rouge can have a adult conversation about something like this that is so contervertial. Oh well you are one of those people who has only got further in school because your teachers hate hearing you talk, I can understand why.

In that case I am fine with it I just hate when people say "oh your a gay basher because you dont have a same sex (anything) in your (what ever)". Just like I hate when the goverment says "you have to buy insurence because (blah) and if you dont you are a bad person because of (blah) so your going to jail or pay a fine"

  • #31 RogueJedi86

But wraith, same-sex romances were planned from the start. Didn't you see the news several months ago, pre-launch, when the devs said it was in the works for post-release content? And given how long it takes to write lines and bring in all the voice actors across 3 languages and then lip-sync the dialogue and program the lines into conversations, it's likely a lot of the work for these has already been done well before their post-launch inclusion in the game.

Your right it wont effect me, and it would be a win for the minority of people who are. Games like ME3 that will have them from the start I do not care about. When they shoe horn it in the game just because a small group of people bitch about it that makes me pissed. I would like the game to have a better selection of aliens that do not look like or similar too humans, or have it be able to play to lvl 15 free so it would be easier to get my friends from wow to swtor. Which many more people would want but instead they might do something like add same sex romance arcs just because it will be considerd PC.

The word you are looking for is "sense" not "since".

Look at it this way.  You have no way of knowing what is going on between someone and their companions.  As it stands now at end game I rarely even see my companion.  She holds my PvP gear so I can save bag space, that is about it.  If my female character were to marry a female companion how would you even know?  How would that even affect you?

You would never even know...  You are simply looking down on homosexuals and trying to justify it by claiming it does not fit with the story setting.

  • #34 wrathsizor

Your right silver I do not like homosexuality it goes right in the face of Evolution and some of them have the audacity to say "We where born this way" unless there ignorant (which if they are then okay I will let them slide) they make religous people look correct. Next time you comment please for us all and yourself make sure you know what and how the person is talking.

  • #17 RogueJedi86

Why not? Just because we haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Plus Karen Traviss hinted at it with a couple of her Mandos, whose names I don't remember.

  • #28 RogueJedi86

But wraith, by that logic, they shouldn't give options to have non-caucasian skin colors simply because white people are the majority in the parts of the world where TOR is played. But I imagine you won't agree with that, right? Right?

  • #27 wrathsizor

Why listen to the arguments of another person who I do not know is fully informed. I like to make my own stand, on issues like this. At the base of the argument is this, should game company and all other types of media have to bend a knee to a small minority because it would be fair or should they go with the majority in a perfect world this would not be a problem. In this world we are not perfect, so who should win the Christians/Musilums/Jews/Anti-gay groups or the Pro gay groups which are too numerus to count. The first should win because they alone repersent the vast majority of all people of this world and gaming community. So if where going to be fair there should be no BLG relationships at all also should we make them spend the money and man power to creat that just because a small group cries about inequaility no we should not make them.

You might find this discussion informative. First, there is a "straight male gamer" making a long-winded complaint about GLBTQ content. Then there is Bioware's David Gaider's response.

acctually only about 5.4-6.9 precent of the world is homosexual san fran has the highest precent of homosexuals in the world at 12.5%. So no there is a tiny precent of people in the world and even smaller in Tor. Also yes they will make every current companion it makes no buisness sense(ty Silvervign) for Bioware to make all new companions just for gay/lesbian/bi relationships. On top of that, it would cost more money than it would be worth to make the change plusy ou know a bunch of Christian gamers will boycott the game over it. We all know those people tend to be determend about that kind of stuff.

I didn't see anyone making armor in the movies. Doesn't mean I object to Armormech as a crew skill in TOR.

The homosexual minority is bigger than you think. Rough estimates of 10%,and 10% of TOR's 1.7 million players is a lot, 10x the population of my small town. You give the players what they want. And since they've implied they'll make new companions for these romances, you won't have all the members of your crew suddenly turn gay/bi(though I think a few, like Kaliyo for Agent, would be more open to a same sex fling).
