During the MMORPG.com panel at PAX East, James Ohlen mentioned that Star Wars: The Old Republic Update 1.2 would start to roll out next week. We were luckily able to not only transcribe the comments but also bring the audio to you so you can decide for yourself.
Well, Star Wars: The Old Republic is already out, so I won't plug the gameplay because I am sure everyone already knows what that is. For 2012 we really want players to, going back to the subscription model, feel like they're getting their money's worth. So the scope of our game updates in 2012 is going to be unimaginable. You're going to see so many changes and additions to the Star Wars Universe. It's going to be impressive. We have our Update 1.2 coming in the next week and then after that it's going to continue to roll out month after month. It's exciting.

Posted 4/9/2012 9:32:46 AMDoes anyone know what will happen to Mercenary Commendations after 1.2? Will they dissapear, or just sit there useless? I'm not level 50 yet but i've maxed out both warzone and mercenary commendations. Wondering if 1.2 hits before i get to spend them, i might get screwed for turning them into mercenary commendations.

Posted 4/8/2012 10:50:43 AMPersonally, I think that the biggest problem with this game is not the game features themselves, but the feeling of entitlement that so many people feel these days when it comes to games. In one aspect, we have been so spoiled by games that we have been playing that when we go to a different game and it doesn't go as smooth or have the same features, it's a terrible game. In another way, we feel the need to compare every game to the other, failing to simply take a game for what it is instead of looking at it for what it's not. Every single game out there has pros and cons. You'd be happier in a game if you started playing a game and took in what IT has and the way IT makes use of different mechanics instead of complaining that it's not good since it doesn't use a control system like (insert name here) mmo or so on. I've played so many different mmos over the years and If you look at them all like that, you will find that most, not all, but most are not bad games and worth paying for.

Posted 4/8/2012 6:11:29 PMIt's simply a case of having reasonable expectations. If you're waiting for a perfect game on day one you'll be waiting forever. No game in this industry was an overnight success. No game in this industry ever will be.
SWTOR may not be perfect, but at this point in its life no MMORPG title is. What determines if a game will be a success is not its launch state, but its mature state. This usually takes shape anywhere from six months to a year after launch; if the mature game is lacking it will likely fail to attain its potential, but if it meets that basics that are expected by the community it will grow and thrive for several years at least.

Posted 4/9/2012 3:39:38 AMExactly,
Expecting ANYTHING to be fully grown and matured within a few months of its birth is absolutely ridiculous. Nobody goes to 3 months of karate classes and is a master; nobody drives for 3 months and is suddenly an expert (some people drive for years and still can't do it for shit); nobody takes 3 months of classes and suddenly has a masters degree; no MMO is out for 3 months and has every feature some deem it must have.
There isn't a single MMO that launched, or had within a few months, EVERY single necessary feature - not even the king of the current mountain: World of Warcraft. Mostly because necessary features, in the minds of many, also include frivolous quality of life features that take development time away from the core game to implement.
For some, cantina activities are necessary features, while others see open world PvP development as a more necessary feature. Others still see Operations as the most necessary feature that should be developed, first and foremost. Almost everyone has an opinion on what is necessary, but I have yet to meet a large MMO community that could agree on what is paramount among said necessity features. God knows some said UI customization was an absolute necessity (it is coming in 1.2), while others would trade in their spouses AND the new UI customization for a more meaningful open world PvP experience. Until a player base can agree on what is most important, than what is actually most important is all relative.
Because of the above phenomenon, no MMO will ever launch in a state that will satisfy all parties. I hope people realize that - fat chance - before games like GW2 launch. Otherwise, a game some herald as an MMO messiah will just get lit on fire when people tear through the available content expecting it to match games with an almost decade-long head start.
Anyone who expects a fully polished, feature packed game that satisfies all tastes straight out of the gate is a complete fool.

Posted 4/8/2012 2:25:02 PMWhilst i agree you should judge each game on their own, there is still the point that bioware has completely messed up on on things you can reasonably expect from a current MMO. I'm mainly talking interface functionality here. Where is my equipment manager ? The GTN search and category filters are crappy and lacking for current standards. The crafting interface, where is my "have materials", "has skillup" filter, where is the search on name/stats/etc function in it ?
Gameplay-wise i think they did a good job, i really like the game but imho they really missed a lot of things that should be considered standard convenience in a 2011/2012 game.

Posted 4/8/2012 6:13:03 PMIndeed, most of the game's primary systems are complete, well-developed, and enjoyable. Its the subsystems that are lacking at this point.
As you noted, some of them are really lacking at the moment.
