During the MMORPG.com panel at PAX East, James Ohlen mentioned that Star Wars: The Old Republic Update 1.2 would start to roll out next week. We were luckily able to not only transcribe the comments but also bring the audio to you so you can decide for yourself.
Well, Star Wars: The Old Republic is already out, so I won't plug the gameplay because I am sure everyone already knows what that is. For 2012 we really want players to, going back to the subscription model, feel like they're getting their money's worth. So the scope of our game updates in 2012 is going to be unimaginable. You're going to see so many changes and additions to the Star Wars Universe. It's going to be impressive. We have our Update 1.2 coming in the next week and then after that it's going to continue to roll out month after month. It's exciting.

Posted 4/6/2012 10:15:43 PMMaybe they are simply allowing the parts of the patch that won't change to be downloaded early. Wow does this don't they?

Posted 4/6/2012 10:40:50 PMI think, and I could be completely wrong, that it was just a poorly-formed sentence.
I read it like that with "changes and additions" being the subject of the clause "going to continue to roll out" because, as far as the structure of the paragraph goes, that actually makes sense. I think Ohlen just screwed up the syntax between "is" and "are" and the whole thing reads kind of stupid.
SYNTAX AGREEMENT IS SUPER IMPORTANT, KIDS.

Posted 4/6/2012 9:26:25 PMFrom what I understand of the soundbite this is what happens :
1: 1.2 comes "next week". Whether he means the April 10th reset or April 17th isn't really clear.
My personal opinion is that if they're rolling out 1.2 in 3½ days, they would've been a lot firmer and louder in announcing this, especially since they did say that we'd be given forewarning.
2: The soundbite containing "(...)it's going to continue to roll out month after month. It's exciting.".
This speaks to the tools that BW have developed that cuts down the production time of new content remarkedly, enabling them to design, code, create and release content at a reasonably faster pace than most of the competitors out there.
Whether this also applies to the barebones mechanics of the SWTOR system (eg. multispec/legacy upgrades/gb upgrades) or this is only aimed at content creation eg. Ops/FP's/WZ's is hard to say.
My personal opinion on this is that their tools are designed for making instances, be it FP's or Ops.
When you have a game out and no tool to automatically xfer chars from one server to another (like we saw in the PTS case where the participating guilds in the EC test had to get their chars copied over manually by devoted BW employees) then you're kindda behind on some of the stuff.
So +1 for fast ops creation and implementation, -3 for not having the backend system ducks in a row.

Posted 4/6/2012 9:43:15 PMIf they go with the Trion/Rift development philosophy, I'd be pretty cool with that.
They have a pretty efficient toolkit for content creation and, with that, they can crank out said content at a decent pace. In that same stroke, they're constantly adding little tweaks, quality of life features and the occasional Big Damn Thing.
What that manages to do is create something that's better than the sum of its parts, because not only are you not waiting for a quarterly (or longer) development cycle to get content, you're getting as much (if not slightly more) new content than you would in that longer development cycle and it feels fresher because that's always something new.
It's far too early to say what exactly BioWare is going to go for but a few months in, it definitely sounds like they're going for the faster, fresher, "get what we can out when we can" development philosophy and I am very happy with that.

Posted 4/7/2012 2:31:44 AMi think they should be embarrassed over their inability to automate as simple a task as to copy a file (which is all your characer is) over to the test server w/o (apparently) throwing a wrench into the works. their database must be in a very sad state.

Posted 4/6/2012 9:01:18 PMUnclear antecedents are unclear.
"Update 1.2 coming in the next week and then after that it's going to continue to roll out month after month."
I have the feeling that the "it" he's referring to is just the additional content he just touted, rather than Update 1.2. I'm reasonably certain that when 1.2 hits, it will be all in one patch.

Posted 4/6/2012 8:37:21 PMFrom what I get, they will install the 1.2 starting next week (no exact day), but in more than one patch. So maybe in several days, we get some 1.2.x patches.
