Open Forum: Group Finder

With Patch 1.3 on the way sometime Soon, the group finder and its implications on the game has players of Star Wars: The Old Republic buzzing. Should the group finder be cross-server functional? If so, how should it prioritize filling the group? If not, what do you see as the pros and cons of keeping it on the same server? Regardless of what it is and will be, we want to hear what you think of it in the comments section after the jump. Keep the opinions constructive and do not flame your peers. We will moderate accordingly.

Next week’s podcast will feature a few of the comments as well as a discussion around the area that received the most remarks.

As for LFG in general, I'd love to see an implementation of a global LFG channel, so that you don't have to travel to the fleet before spamming LFG, and more people of your level (who are most likely going to be on the planet levelling) can see your LFG message and join the group. I think this should help with most of the problems people currently have, although to be honest, our biggest problem at the moment isn't in finding people - it's finding the right roles. Lots of people around, especially of similar levels - just not enough tanks, apparently.

This is genius! ide love to be doing dalies... and then tgo to the LFG channel..so i dont have to sit my butt in the fleet..

Our server has had one for months.  Yours doesn't?

Only problem is, for some reason people can't join it any more.  Stealth cap on # of people on a custom channel?  Who knows.  There's a new one now but none of the old people are on it.

Yeah, but the problem was people had to "join" it. I would prefer it to be on by default, maybe with level-appropriate ranges - ie. have brackets you automatically join, say [Looking For Group 20-30]. It would automatically put you into the next bracket as soon as you hit the appropriate level, but it might keep you in the LFG for the previous one too - I know a lot of people love running instances that are lower than them just because they may have missed it/want to grind social points/want gear from there. Of course, you'd have the option to turn it off, but I believe most people would be on it (almost 100% actually) if it was automatically on by default.

So say I'm on Tatooine, and i'm level 34. I would be in the LFG [20-30] and LFG [30-40]. Someone who is Level 38 would be able to say "LFG X Flashpoint" and it would automatically go out to all planets, and all players who are level appropriate (and are therefore in the channel) would see this. Saves a lot of hassle of going to each planet to recruit, or having to pause your questing just because you want to do a Flashpoint.

I really don't think a Random LFG tool is needed if the above was implemented. I have no problems in finding groups when there are enough people on the fleet, and this is usually only at specific levels (notice how quickly an Esseles/Black Talon run is formed - this is because there's an abundance of just-turned 10/11 players on the Fleet as they are guided there by their quest). Incorporating a global, default channel would ease the burden of having to travel to each level-specific planets to recruit.

In fact, you could reward players who start a group by making the gear that drops in dungeons more specific to the actual classes that have entered it. I know that it is the case 75% of the time, but it should be 100%.

A question we haven't really touched on, but just how 'instanced' are Flashpoints from the rest of the game world?

From a technical implementation point of view... it could be a huge change to make these cross-server if they are not built in such a way to separate the instance from the originating game server.

But yes, I really think a LFG tool needs to be cross-server.

In my opinion, this is the biggest thing the game is missing at this point.  Its so hard to find groups (especially while leveling alts) and that makes players avoid them.  It will be great being able to open up the group finder while questing just like the pvp finder.  Well over due.

A nice compromise would be same server queue for 20 minutes and then fill out the group xserver after that.  Hopefully you would have at least two people in the group from the same server.  LFG should allow people to find competent players to group with or guild with, and that can't happen with xserver.  One of the major factors for player retention is whether or not people have friends to play with.

As much as I want LFG (and hopefully soon after LFO, Looking for Operations) to be cross-server, I don't believe Bioware will release cross-server anything until PVP cross-server is ready. I would love to be wrong.

    So, here is my guess:

    - 1.3 = LFG, ranked pvp, legacy, and guild content,

    - 1.4 = new space content, story additions/chapters, new WZ, legacy

     - 1.5 = new operation, WZ, and flashpoints to build on 1.4 story and introduce cross-server LFG, legacy

add for 1.4 Multi Spec...its not going to be here for 1.3...

Re: Looking for Group - Cross Server Please.  Why? Less Waiting Time, especially helpful for people on Low Server Populations.

Biggest SWTOR issue imo: like mentioned in previous posts is the Need for Server Transfers and to migrate some of the lowest Server populations into the other Servers.  We just don't want 1 Fatman server that is thriving.  Take the lowest 12 Servers and sprinkle them into 8-12 of the top third servers.   With BW loosing another 400k or so people since the last subscriber report - they are going to loose even more subscribers with New Releases coming out this year - D3, MOP, and GW2.  Game potential here is so High but they really need to focus on helping developing great communities (Guild features) and some additional Untraditional End Game stuff to make SWTOR stand out (Swoop Racing? Space Battles?) from the crowd so it will be able to weather the hits that are ahead in 2012.

My biggest Bioware Question: What is their current priority for making SWTOR stand out and shine?  Quality stuff is great, and 1.2 really helped but they should be asking themselves the question - how do we retain the people that have done all the story stuff and leveled multiple alts?

The Group Finder should be defo in my opinion cross-server. This because of some very low populated servers, finding a group is a pain on those servers. And in regards to that I think it should not be limited to only flashpoints and operatives if that is what BW had in mind (I don't know on that one, so please don't go nuts on me for that). It should also include normal/heroic missions, dailies, world bosses, achievements, objectives (codex), etc. Although I think only flashpoints and operatives should be cross-server and rest same server.

The way how I think the Group Finder should prioritize the filling of the group is to try gathering a group with at least two different classes with advanced classes taken into account aswell. I think asking the group finder to make a group with four different classes is too much asked, it also would just increase the queue times. At the same time I think it should try to make a group with having at least 1 class that has a cc.

Along those lines, I think the Group Finder should come with options allowing ppl the following:

    • able to choose cross-server or same server
    • able to choose specific or random flashpoints/operatives and difficulty
    • able to set a LFG comment
    • although with no dualspec yet, or is this coming too in 1.3? able to queue up as dps/tank/healer at same time (more in future option)

On a side note, after reading Blizzard blue post about cross-server zones, I think Bioware should "really" consider that idea. Doesn't need to have the same limitations or exact implementatons as Blizzard's but the idea itself "cross-server zones". On some planets even on a high populated server I have a hard time finding ppl for some heroic 4 missions or even can't find ppl for it. And I love doing missions and hate to skip missions on a planet. And they should introduce server transfers/mergers very soon.

It has to be cross realm and this is why. Rift added a LFG tool ( I dont remember what patch) that was server only. I was playing it at the and was excited to see it added to the game. Spamming in trade is never fun in any game. So I logged in on my rogue after patch hit and clicked LFG tool and waiting 2 1/2 hours!! Only reason i was on for so long waiting is because i was farming matts. So yeah server only will not help at all. Rift learn from there mistake and made LFG server wide the following patch, as well as server wide PVP Que. I love SWTOR and i want to see it succeed. I played wow for 6 years straight and I personally dont give a crap about panda's so make it right MAKE LFG TOOL AND PVP QUE'S SERVER WIDE!!

Sorry, to me the Group Finder is kind of pointless.  I play with 1 to 3 other people almost constantly.  In fact I am usually a bit releaved when I get some time to solo.  Most of the time we are running dailies, or leveling alts.  Finding people has not been a big issue.  The only thing I could see a group finder being used for is Operations... which I really don't want to pug anyways and when I want to do them will just sign up with my guild.

However, I may just be a lucky one.  I play a tank, and the person I play with the most plays a healer.  Having that combo means it isn't to hard to attract DPS.

To me the biggest things that need to be added, a lot more orange schematics for EVERYTHING.  There are a lot of green items, especially at the lower levels, that I would like to wear as augmented oranges.  There are a lot of looks I can't craft and would like to.  Augment tables will be a huge help (assuming they work right), but still I want schematics for everything.  Also give crafters some sort of ability to mess with looks, colors, etc on outfits before crafting.  I am a member of the TCL and I know we would really like to have Corellian robes for our Jedi guildies (and a variety of styles fo those green robes too).  That is way more important than a group finder.

The second biggest thing is the ability to list guild members by Legacy instead of per character.  So that way 1 person and all their alts only take up one slot in the guild cap.  That to me is the second biggest thing.

Well right now they need to prioritize things on what will attract and retain players. Group finder would be top of that list.... sure cross server would attract more people but it would degrade server unity. As a tank I agree that having a healer to play with a lot does tend to attract more dps but it doesn't change the fact that we only have 50 people on the fleet or 1/10th the players that signed up for TCL that actually stuck around.

The game does need some flavor to keep people in the guild and yes dyeable armor would be nice... but all threy really need to do is add more colors and models to the custom chest armors that can be crafted If those are there they can be mass produced for members and they can unify it. This would allow a unified look for the chest but allow others to be able to look unique with the other slots.

Augment kits would be really nice and I'd prefer those being added to armormech and synthweave. Who would better be able to modify a piece of gear than people that specialize in it???

Free flight space is a must in a star wars game... we won't really have people running back until this is a star wars game.

So after all that I just want to say that things need to be prioritized.. Getting some of the 400 people that stopped playing to come back would be better for our guild and server than better crafting control (as much as I'd like that).

I cannot see a reason for it NOT to be cross server. It helps the light population/'standard' population servers a lot. If they feel that they need to limit it, make server clusters so that the cross server is kept to a 'local group' thing. I'm still a little baffled at how they shipped without this in the first place, but que sera sera.

Well for me the LFG tool has ot be cross server PVE, I don't do PVP.

My server is light, leveling alt is a nightmare.. ther eis nobody to do heoric or Flashpoint.

On the fleet it's the same, below 50 it's just a waste of time...

Whatever people say about cross server or not, I would just add an option to allow people to unselect the cross server option if they want to keep it as "same server".. at least everybody will have what he thinks is better for him.

If they restrict the LFG tool to "same server" then allow guild/people to move FOR FREE to another server... the result will be more or less the same as  a "merge server"... some servers will be gull while others nearly empty.

I really believe that if Blizzard manages to implement the cross-server quest zones as they announced today, then Bioware will be put to shame even more. I am simply astoundent by the difference between the differences in capabilities and understanding shown by the two companies regarding the needs of their game. I really hope Bioware catches up soon since MoP is shaping up to be a lot of things that swtor promised to be and never delivered- and that's a bloody shame imo.
