On May 7, we covered the Electronic Arts Q4 2012 Earnings Conference Call. During the call, Electronic Arts mentioned large layoffs incoming to portions of the company. What we did not know was how deeply it would affect BioWare. Today, BioWare announced the layoffs of people who we have come to know over the two plus years of working on Darth Hater. We wish the best of luck to all those affected by this news.

Posted 5/23/2012 10:49:45 AMI don't get why Reid would be fired. He doesn't seem to be at blame for any of TOR's problems since he's just a community guy. In fact, he seems to be one of the highlights of the dev team, with a twitter that is constantly active and talking to fans about TOR. He may be the most community-involved community rep of any game I've ever seen. He was doing his job well and then some.

Posted 5/23/2012 12:27:47 PMI take it you haven't been at any companies with lay-offs then...
They are normally based on a percentage and/or numeric value of the amount that they want to reduce by.... So say 25% of gross annual salary costs. It would be upto the senior management to pick the staff with the salaries to equal this figure/percentage... It could mean one person on $150k a year, or 3 people on $50k... it wouldn't be based on seniority, only if senior management thought that by getting rid of SR, for example, they had adequate cover to make his larger salary count.... They also have to take into account, possible severance pay... why get rid of someone who has been at the company 10 years, and could get a pay-off of several tens of thousands of dollars, if they can get rid of someone who has been there around the 2 year mark, who wouldn't command that much of a severance package...

Posted 5/22/2012 9:57:03 PMWith MMOs its not good in any way, shape or form. It means less people to develop content. Less content, longer waits.
It also shows that the powers that be are losing confidence.
This is bad no matter how you look at it. I still have an active subscription, though I'm too consumed with Diablo III to care about TOR right now.... but I am rooting for Bioware.

Posted 5/23/2012 5:38:43 AMyou, sir, aren't paying attention. taken together with EA Ricotello's not-so-veiled demotion comments regarding TOR in their portfoilo, the future does not look bright for TOR.
1.3 is just a "features" patch w/o any new content and it's not even on PTS yet. how much longer will it take them to get out 1.4 after laying off staff? Ricotello said they'd get 2 updates out in the next 3 months. i don't see how that can happen at this rate, especially since 1.4 is supposed to be a "content-heavy" patch.

Posted 5/22/2012 6:27:13 PMBioware made mistakes with SWTOR. They tried to do too much, and they set the computer requirements too high for entry. Speaking for myself personally, the primary reason why I've quit is because the game runs like total crap on my computer, and I see no indication that this issue will be resolved, and I am not going to upgrade my computer for this game. I would have been interested in upgrading my computer for the game if the game had compelling long-term content. Sadly, it does not. Apart from the character story(which is interesting, I admit), there is very little here. My recommendation is this: if you're looking for a new MMO, something different, something new, do not look for a WoW clone, which is what SWTOR is.

Posted 5/22/2012 5:54:37 PMI'm pretty sure 1 million ppl are not playing Tor right now. They might be subscribed but, they are going to quit as soon as there sub runs out. Not really sure what Stephen Reid has to do with the game failing since he didn't make it. The ppl that should get laid off are the ppl who designed the quests, raids, worlds, gear, crafting, fleets, content and I'm sorry not having ewoks in the game was a dumb decision. Pvp was good and story was good.

Posted 5/22/2012 4:43:11 PMI don't know why people always want to fault a single reason.
Company layoffs, especially for a huge company like EA, come in many forms because of MANY reasons. It is not SWTOR nor ME's fault. It is a much bigger picture.

Posted 5/22/2012 4:52:27 PMI'm sorry, but this is naive. If they didn't lose 400k subscribers last quarter (and dropping) these layoffs would not be happening.

Posted 5/22/2012 5:19:08 PMReid hasn't posted on his Twitter since Friday, when he's normally very vocal. Maybe there's a connection.
But who will take his place? I like Reid. Amber Green or one of those other CMs who make most of the news posts?
