What's Next for Server Transfers

It’s no exaggeration to say that the last few weeks have been quite tumultuous for a majority of the Star Wars: The Old Republic playerbase. While the free character transfers have consolidated the community down to a smaller number of core servers, holdouts still exist on many of the Origin servers. To combat this, BioWare offered rewards to entice some of those holdouts. Today however, the team announced in a blog post that further measures would be taken to reinforce those core server populations. This will all culminate in a series of mandatory transfers for some servers, though there are no details on how many Origin servers will be depopulated yet.

In addition, character creation has been disabled on select Origin servers, a list of which can be found at swtor.com/transfer.

For the full text of the announcement, read after the jump.

Announcement

Hi everyone,

We want to thank all players that have participated in our Free Character Transfer Service.  With strong destination server populations, we hope that you’re enjoying the improved gameplay experience and are excited about receiving the Gannifari mini-pet and the 25 Black Hole commendations that we announced as part of the Free Character Transfer Reward Program.

Later this summer, we’re taking steps to further strengthen destination server population. Ultimately, we are working to transition all players to designated destination servers in the Free Character Transfer Service.

To continue to enhance the overall gameplay experience for current and new players, we have eliminated the option to create new characters on selected origin servers. Visit www.swtor.com/transfer to see a list of all the selected origin servers that will be affected.

Later this summer, any remaining characters on selected origin servers will be automatically moved to designated destination servers. We will provide additional details regarding the automatic character transfer process at that time.

For more information, please visit this article.

Thanks again for your participation and support!

When will I be able to consolidate my main characters on a single server. I have a large investment of time, money, crew skills and legacy on two different servers. I don't feel like playing until I can merge them. What's with the frickin' delay?

There is no delay, I dont know what are you talking about. Transfers are over. Enjoy the game.

Transfers are certainly not over.  The Free Character Transfer Service is still active and will be at least until the end of July, when the rewards census is conducted on the destination servers.  As for bfrick's question, there is no announced date for paid transfers to a server of your choice, which is the only way to get what you're asking for.

Yes. You didnt understand what I said... what I was referring to in "Transfers are over" was that Destinations/Origins servers have all been defined by now. Sure you can transfer if you haven't yet, but origin/destination servers are not going to change.

As I had mentioned previously, they should have just merged servers and called it a day. That is exactly what this was. The only difference is they allowed those who wanted to merge to go, then whoever did not want to go gets forced. Would have been much easier to just do it and call it a day.

Yep, everyone had to guess this would happen. No need to waste money, time, servers on completely dead servers. Since the game is pretty much a fail game all together they need to save on money which will hopefully help the remaining..5 servers that are left now? lol. I wonder if it's coincidence that they are giving those comms in August..Hint hint. ;)

Why don't you stop posting, on one wants to read your troll comments.

If you hate the game why are you wasting time here? Go away.

I saw this coming and I'm glad it is. For those of you not transfering. Suck it up, it's Bioware doing you a favor. If you want to play alone go play a single player game. I heard Skyrim is fun. There's no reason for Bioware to keep a server up for a population of under 100 players a day. This is a good thing it will help them focus on the servers they have and alleviate the load on them. If they need more servers later they can re-open some of the old ones.

    +1 Bioware.

The description in this article is not quite correct.  Character creation has not been completely disabled on "select origin servers," or indeed on any origin server.  Instead, on every origin server, you can only create a character if you already have at least one character there (and fewer than the max, of course).  Those are the only origin servers you can connect to at all.  Once you connect, you can create and delete characters to your heart's content.  If you don't already have a character on a particular origin server, it's locked to you, presumably forever.  This will force new F2P players onto the destination servers.

Originally I had Empire characters on one server and Republic characters on a different server, both of those have now been consolidated to the server I was playing Empire on.  I still have Republic characters on the Origin server as I don't have slots on the Destination server, they are alts so it doesn't really matter but has Bio-ware addressed what they are going to do about that when they forcibly migrate off the Origin servers?

Hmm.  I thought they were starting with voluntary transfers to separate the active players from the inactive players.  Then I figured they would sprinkle the intactive players around to smooth out the pops with the forced merges, since people who can't be bothered to transfer on their own probably don't care where they end up.

But if they put everyone in the same place regardless, then there goes that theory.  And I agree with the poster who said they should have just done it in one clean stroke and buttoned it up fast.

So my level 50 char on Hex Droid will be force-transferred to The Tomb of Freedon Nadd and then I will have to PAY to transfer him to Nightmare Lands where the rest of my characters are. Good Job Well Done!

  • #4 hunterofprime

Where are the payed transfers though? That's what I've been waiting for since launch.. (since I didn't want to restart my sith inquisitor I had already put enough effort into).  Commmmee on BIOWARE, you clearly already have the technology for this...

  • #5 ChuckNorris

Wait, I dont get it. You created chars on different servers and now you are blaming Bioware?

    Please enlighten me.

  • #15 Socrates

Well I do not know his situation. But, when I got tired of their being less than 5 people on the fleet at 10pm when my normal time to play is, I made a couple characters on the fatman server so I could actually play my MMO with other people. I would guess he was in a similiar situation, or just had too many characters.
