LiveStream Q&A Notes

Earlier today, BioWare held their first monthly LiveStream Q&A. Like many of the fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic, we were in virtual attendance and managed to take notes for those that were unable to watch live. Do note that repeated points were ignored. Full notes are available below.

  • Free to play players will not have rest xp, but will get mid level gear sets, xp boosts, will be testing F2P before the official launch on the PTS, couple of weeks before, anyone who logs on will get coins to test with
  • Want to offer paid character transfers to other servers, near future
  • Cathar and HK-51 are coming, HK before the end of the year, Cathar when it's ready
  • Pets, mounts, non endgame gear, not restricted by faction or class, cartel packs random assortment of items, good and cool stuff but not powerful coming for F2P store
  • Nightmare mode: Denova coming first on EC, sometime after that for TFB, fully fledged mode, differences from hard mode
  • Can't go into detail on the overlapping perks and F2P
  • Species unlocks for Cartel Coins, players can purchase the Cather unlock, will see how it goes for the rest after launch
  • Want to do a toggle hood option, researching it for possible implementation in the future
  • Down scaling difficulty - hard and have to remake from ground up, thinking up other ways for smaller group of players

Update: Our recorded recap of the Q&A is now available.

The one part that erks me a lot is that they are now stretching content that was going to be ONE/maybe two patch(s) into what now looks like content going well into next year. Most of these things just 2-3 months ago were part of 1-2 patches all coming out this year and now just cause they are going F2P they are stretching out this content till prob mid next year. Games go F2P and still deliver content a lot faster then this. It sounds like they lost all their good developers so they are just stretching the work they did before they left, and who knows what they have to deliver after that runs dry. My guild is taking a break till new Raid content comes out, but now we are not sure paying the sub is worth it if they stretch the content out so much we have to keep taking breaks for months in between them. It has already been 6+ months since we finished Denova. I know they will have content gaps, but that is a bit much. This is why people left WoW. their last raid has been out for a year now. MMOs just seem to be a dying breed. Too much to make in this economy.

Yes, they postponed the Terror ops by one patch, that seems to be the main problem for you & your guild (as NM for Denova is not yet playable).
The other content, well, it is staggering, I was hoping to see HK-51 and Cathar as the first "big" locked content for F2P players, so something that is coming in November. However, what was said in this interview, that does not fill me with hope. I do not understand what is not "done" on Cathar, seeing as the model for both male and female are already in the game. But then, maybe, they are saving them for the F2P update.
As for loosing developers, no MMOG, or any game for that matter, retains the complete team that was building it more than few months after launch (SWTOR kept the team for the longest time, AFAIK, most other devs team disband a month after launch, in BW is was after half a year or so).

I agree in many aspects of what you are saying. But MMO's are really not doing well. I mean the only thing they really supply after launch is looks and stupid stuff like face emotes. I could care less about face emotes and would rather have more content, or how about this, they want to work on looks they could start with the looks of their gear and make it more viable looking to the lore. Or how about those that are light jedi that want to defect to a sith. I think they could come up with better stuff. MMO's are not really a dying breed. They just do not have people making them with a good imagination any more. These new people think its all about looks. I do agree to some extent that looks is in some cases a factor but so is content.

Keep in mind that some thing are easier to do than others.

Face emotes, while pretty stupid thing, are extremely easy to do, compared to scripting and designing new operation or planet.

Gear looks, that is an interesting point. While some gear looks pretty unrealistic, not to mention unpractical (enormous hooks on bracers, etc), you can always use the mods in any piece of orange gear you like. And pretty much all the gear except endgame for Jedi/Sith classes looks lore-realistic.

Defection to other side were stated to not happen way before launch. You cannot take a Jedi and repaint him as Sith. They have completely different storyline. If such thing was possible, it would have to be one time only deal at higher levels. Otherwise, the writer team's heads would just implode.

I find this rather disturbing. I am not one to flame. I have been playing Tor since before launch. I have even stayed through all the other stuff they have done. Now I am seeing alot of stuff that is... well to put it bluntly not why I pay to play a game. So now they are going to make it free to play. But give the free guys xp boosts and mid level gear? I am really disappointed in this game, I was already reluctant since they closed down SWG to launch this game. And yes they closed SWG down for this game because lucas did not want 2 games with his name on them competing. Then they hire a guy who has been involved with every game that has failed. Something wrong here? or is it me? I will be sooo glad when they launch project swg and bring back a game that should never have been shut down for this game.

Somehow, my comment disappeared, so I am posting it again

In the video, there is no mention of FREE items or FREE XP boosts. They say that those things can be bought for Cartel Coins (aka real money) in the Market, that is all. That means everyone can buy those, even subscribers, who will get Cartel Coins for their already paid subscription time (as per table on swtor.com/free) and then even for each month they will pay after F2P launches

True but That just confirms my idea that with it being free to play.... it will end up as pay to win. eventually we will be seeing new people with high level toons they made a week ago and wearing the same gear you spent several months to get. Then lets look at this point as well. The free to play will produce several new faces yes but they will be limited to content. so us vet players who pay the monthly sib will get ganked as we will not be able to set up groups for the raids and such. Now i know that there will still be several players that pay but we all know they will lose alot of subs since they already have taken out the new race til... when ever. When they make a promis and then go back on it they make people mad. They had already promised that all this new content will be out this fall. Now it is being pushed back on some things. They have the new 1.4 patch on test, But no one loggs on to level a toon to 50... Wait if I level a toon to 50 ojn test I will miss the test and it will be live by that time... useless. And they will not do copies to test either. I sometimes do not understand why they do what they do. But I guess I will go with the flow til something better comes out for me to spend my time and money on.

Watch the video again please, several times probably, so you hear everything they say, because I have a feeling you did not understand anything they said. It has been clearly stated that high-end gear will not be for purchase from Market.

Then lets look at this point as well. The free to play will produce several new faces yes but they will be limited to content. so us vet players who pay the monthly sib will get ganked as we will not be able to set up groups for the raids and such.

Not sure I understand you here. You are worried that you will not be able to get group for Operations with more people online? That is insane troll logic. Plus, F2P people have operations disabled and they have to buy them.

Now i know that there will still be several players that pay but we all know they will lose alot of subs since they already have taken out the new race til... when ever. It was stated that HK-51 will be "this year" and Cather "when it is done". As I stated, that could mean that both are meant as "exclusive" for subscribers and something that F2P people must pay for. To it is possible they are delaying it until F2P launches in November.

They have the new 1.4 patch on test, But no one loggs on to level a toon to 50... Wait if I level a toon to 50 ojn test I will miss the test and it will be live by that time... useless.

Well, I think that your characters remain on PTS, because you see people like DH.com team doing test runs of the new Operation day or two after it is uploaded to PTS, and that would be impossible if they had to level up new characters.

Does this mean they are lifting class/faction restrictions on gear currently in the game or does it mean that there is new gear coming to the F2P store that will not have class/faction restrictions?

Probably new gear. I expect it to be like adaptive social gear with mods already intact.

Hey guys I have been reading DH's articles for about two plus years now.  I wanted to say that I appreciate the effort that it takes go get the information out to the public first.  You do such an excellent job, so thank you for that.

One of the things that I have a good deal of interest in is the species unlock, that being said I found this statement a bit confusing... "players can purchase he father unlock, will see how it goes for he rest after launch"

Can you clarify this statement a bit?

I believe what it should say is "players can purchase the cathar unlock, will see how it goes for the rest after launch (referring to vanilla races)"

Correct. Was a typo. Fixed now. Thanks!

Why aren't there any comments yet? I am posting at 3:31 am PDT. I am only interested in the Toggle for removing the hood from my Jedi Robes. It's hard enough to connect with my character at level 50 now that my story is done.
