Column: Community Events (10/5/12)

Ladies, gentlemen, and assorted sentient beings, it's time for another dose of community events! This week is PvP heavy, so you PvEers and Roleplayers get kicking! I want to see some more variety out of all of you. We have an RP-PvP Bounty Hunt event on Ilum that looks like it’ll be a blast. Jung Ma is making an attempt to get an evening of Ranked Warzones going. There is an open topic to plan an Open World PvP event going over on the Ebon Hawk server. We also have two non-PvP events for you, but one I mentioned last week. Another +10 Datacron run is being set up on Begeren Colony, and the Swoop Race I mentioned last week on Jedi Covenant had a time change. If there is an event or a guild you think I should cover, let me know by sending me a message with the name of the event or the guild here and I’ll try to put it in the next publication. With that, hit the jump for this week's Community Events.

Events

Bounty Hunt
Gav Daragon

Our first to be discussed this week will be on the 7th of October, 5pm EST. Labeled as a “community event,” it more accurately appears to be an RP-PvP contest to see who can score the most kills with screenshots on the predesignated targets. This contest will be held out on Ilum, with each faction’s hunters starting in their respective bases and hunting very specific targets throughout the battlefield. The first hunter to kill the three targets will get a sizable credit bounty.

You’re going to have to move fast though, hunters need to register, and it closes on the 6th. Check out the page on the official forums or reddit and follow the directions for registration.

Ranked Warzone Nights
Jung Ma

The concept of Ranked Warzone nights seems to be spreading. Taking a page from the Ebon Hawk server, the Angeli Aetherii guild on Jung Ma is organizing a twice weekly Ranked Warzone night. By the sounds of it, their first attempt was a bit underwhelming, but that is to be expected for a first attempt. Keep it going Angeli Aetherii, and keep getting people’s attention, and it will pick up eventually.

All you PvPers and RP-PvPers out there on Jung Ma, take note of 8:00 pm EST on Monday and Wednesday. Try and queue for Rated Warzones at that time and you’ll have a guaranteed opponent waiting for you. Check out the original post on the official forums for more information, or if you would like to discuss it.

+10 Datacron
Begeren Colony

You all know how much I love to get the +10 Datacron, but everyone knows its problematic to get that many people together and organized for it. Republic players on Begeren Colony will be having a Datacron run Friday at 6:00 server time, which at this point is likely only a few hours away so hurry up. The organizer will need help getting the event started, but they would like to get as many people involved as possible. If you want to be involved in preparing and helping others get the Datacron, get the Red Crystal and the MGGS and meet up at 5 server time on the fleet. Sages are also welcome for their “Rescue” ability.

You can check out the original post for more information and to discuss it with the organizer. Below is the linked video from the topic, which I have also used when I originally went for it with my guild.

Open World PvP
The Ebon Hawk

Lastly, a player is trying to get an Open World PvP event started over on the Ebon Hawk. A PvE-RP server usually is not what you think about when PvP is mentioned, but any and all players out there looking for a bloody fight should check it out. Open World PvP is always a kick, but as I have discussed in previous articles, there are several mechanical limits in place for Open World PvP.

The current plan is to have it in Outlaws Den, but as of this posting they are still discussing the rules and how to craft the event over at the official forums. These events can be very fun, but are certainly difficult to organize. If you would like to take part in helping make this event a reality, pay that topic a visit and give them a hand.

Correction

It does not happen often, but I have something that needs to be corrected for all of you. Out on the Jedi Covenant server I told you there would be a Swoop Race last week. To anyone who showed up to that event, you might have noticed that it never happened. That’s because the race was put off a week to the 6th! That’s right, its still happening, just on a new date. Everyone who still wants to have a good race, head to Belsavis and have fun.

Poll

It looks like everyone thinks a smaller number of events a week is a better option, with one to two events sliding into first place. I understand the desire to have fewer numbers; having too many, players wont have enough time to play the actual game. The question at this point though becomes who decides on the events that are on the server? I know many servers have more than that, some have none. The server I am on has a single weekly event and several other non-weekly events.

This opens up an interesting problem though. Some events I know of are supported, ran, and coordinated by a single individual. Others are guild events that simply have random people show up to it. Both options have pros and cons. A single person running an event has freedom to do what they want, how they want, but are limited because its just them supporting themselves. People doing it alone can get burned out if they have to do too much. Guilds however, have the ability to have multiple people working on different aspects of an event. This gives them the ability to run more in depth, creative events, but only as far as the people within the guild are willing to help. The problem with guilds though is that it requires pooling guild resources for an event not all members might agree with. There is also the issue that a guild event, however neutral it should be, will end up being used for recruiting and often is swelled with their members, which might be an issue for ‘rivals’ wanting to do the same event.

Poll: Poll Question

So, my question. How much control should guilds have with community events?

Poll Question - Single Choice

  • None. Let individuals handle it. 0%
  • Guilds can support events if the individuals ask for it. 0%
  • Guilds should support events, and should provide resources if they have them, but not control them. 72.7%
  • Guilds should have control of events, but be as neutral as possible. 9.1%
  • Guilds should have complete control of events and use them how they want. 0%
  • Some other arrangement (comment below!) 18.2%

This poll has ended as of 10/11/2012 12:00:00 AM.

I'm not sure how to answer this one because it really depends on the server community and the guilds involved. Some guilds are great at running events, some not so much. Same with individuals. So I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer to the question.

Guild events are often, in my experience, mostly an individual or a small group running them though and the rest of the guild shows up to participate. Guilds have a greater resource pool in a literal sense (more credits, bank space, etc), but rarely in terms labor or organization -- it still usually boils down to the organizer having to ask their friends to help, which may all be people in guild or may not...

    Usually, it's with derision.
