Column: Community Events (10/12/12)

Another week, and another set of events for you! This week is a fairly even spread between Roleplaying and Player vs. Player events, so let's get to it. Jung Ma is busy with two events this week; one of the military guilds are planning weekly RP-PvP patrols on different planets, and one of the Sith guilds will be hosting an RP “Social” in the Nar Shaddaa cantina. The Bastion is making “kickball style” Ranked Warzones a proper event, improving it over the last attempt which was done spur of the moment. Lastly, the Gav Daragon will be hosting a Republic Class-based PvP Tournament to prove who is the best PvPer on the server. If you have an event or a guild you think I should cover, remember to send me a message on this site telling me the name of the event or guild, the server and contact information. Now let's talk about some events!

Events

Military Patrols
Jung Ma

Most people consider RPers and PvPers to be separate groups of people with little overlap. However, I have seen RP-PvP groups that can put together very interesting events that appeal to both groups. The Republic guild Alpha Company is having some military patrols on Hoth, Alderaan, Tatooine and Belsavis every week Monday through Thursday. They are hoping to use this as a chance to get some World PvP going out in the Galaxy, as well as to get some roleplaying kicked off out in the wilds.

These events are stressed to be in-character role playing events as much as they are potential PvP events, and are not kill on sight missions, so Imperials shouldn’t be too worried about approaching them for some interaction. They will be in small squads on these planets for one hour on the selected day, though times can change in the future if a guild would like to coordinate it for an event. Check out the schedule and the original post if you want to get involved. Try to catch them out on those planets and see if you can get something fun going.

Jung Ma

Another event over on Jung Ma, this time a pure social roleplaying event. The Imperial guild Jen’jidai is hosting an evening social event Saturday nights at the Slippery Slope Cantina on Nar Shaddaa beginning at 10:00pm est. They invite everyone on both factions to come by and hang out, have some fun, and interact with their fellow Jung Ma players. Should be a fairly interesting event, because what could possibly happen when opposing factions meet in neutral space? If you are looking to try your hand at some roleplaying, go check it out, or read the topic for more information.

Kickball Style Ranked Warzones
The Bastion

A few weeks ago you might have seen me discuss an interesting method of forming Ranked Warzone teams, called the ‘kickball’ style. The fine people over on The Bastion will be hosting another one of these events on the 13th of October at 12:00pm PST. They will start with sixteen people forming an ops group and separating off into two Warzone teams. This way, they will both have a guaranteed opposing team to play against. It will quickly become apparent if the teams are equally matched, or if re-balancing is needed. Therefore, after a few games have been played, the teams will be shuffled around a bit to make them equal and encourage everyone to have more fun.

The coordinators of the two teams are “Depinto” and “xcornelius,” so be sure to contact them for an invite if you are interested in trying this out, or read the post here. Good luck to the two teams, I hope it works out for them. If it does, it would be good to see if the idea can spread to other servers.

Class Tournament
Gav Daragon

On Sunday, October 14th at 12:00pm in the Senate Plaza on Coruscant, there will be a tournament to prove who is the best Republic PvPer on the server. The organizer “Dawn” will choose players of each advanced class to start out as champions, who must then fight any and all challengers to the position. Winning two out of three matches against the current champion will make that player the new champion. Once all the champions have been determined in combat, they will fight each other to determine the best single PvPer in the Republic. Be sure to come fully stocked for a fight. Everything that can be used in a fight, as long as it is not an exploit, is permitted. If this works out, there will be an attempt to run another event for the Empire as well. Good luck everyone, and may there be plenty of glory for everyone involved. Check it out here for details.

The class battles will take up blocks of thirty minutes each, so be sure you get there on time, with the final battle happening afterward.

Shadows – 12:00pm
Guardians – 12:30pm
Commandos – 1:00pm
Sage – 1:30pm
Vanguards – 2:00pm
Gunslingers – 2:30pm
Sentinels – 3:00pm
Scoundrels – 3:30pm
Championship Battle – 4:00pm

My Thoughts…

The poll was a fairly clear one, it looks like people think that guilds should support events as much as they can but not have control of it. I’m one of those types that think there was no right answer to this one. The events I run tend to be a mix, depending on the event itself and the people involved. Some I have full control of, and lose a fair bit of Credits and give a lot of my time for it. Others, I have guilds helping me, and simply work in the background keeping the framework together. Sometimes, an event can flourish or disappear simply because of the supplies it has to work with, and the people putting it together. Be very careful who you involve.

Your Thoughts…

It's time for something new though, so let's get to it. This is a simple one, but I want all of you to say something about it down in the comments. There are many types of events; PvP, PvE, RP, prize events, guild events, so on. However, when you boil it down to just the basic idea of the event, there are only two types; those that are planned ahead of time, and those that are started and left up to the random flow of the participants. These two varieties can be mixed up as well. For example, an event can have a planned beginning but the ended can be entirely open-ended.

This is what I ask: Do you prefer planned events, impromptu, or a mix? After you answer, I want you to tell me a type of event you have done that covers that type, or an idea for an event you might have. I would like to see what kinds of things you are doing out there, so start talking.

Poll: Poll Question

Which type of events do you prefer?

Poll Question - Single Choice

  • Planned 60%
  • Impromptu 0%
  • A mix of the two 40%

This poll has ended as of 10/18/2012 12:00:00 AM.

    Hello DH,

This is Depinto from the bastion. I just wanted to say that the ranked warzone "kickball style" went extremely well today. We got four solid hours of queuing and the teams were pretty evenly matched. Those who stayed for the full four hours had a pretty even distribution of wins and losses. At one point, there were 4 RWZ teams running. I am so pleased with how this turned out that I will be doing this every weekend. In fact, I would even like to start a guild (even if you just want to keep your alts in it) that runs inner-guild RWZ matches with 16 people.

Thanks to DH for the promotion and to all those that attended.

See you next Sat. Oct 20th at 12pm PST for more!

Completely planned events often end up railroading a specific outcome.

Entirely impromptu events usually aren't events and they can leave the people who show up without any reason to even interact, or leave people just standing around doing nothing. If something arises spontaneously, that's cool but that rarely happens when you're trying to make it happen unless you do some planning and nudging (which means it's not entirely improptu...)

I find that having a good initial planned premise will get people together and get them started but that from there, it doesn't matter what you plan or what you expect, it will go someplace entirely different. It's a table-top RPG gamemaster joke: I had a perfect story, then I introduced it to my players.

I have a *special* relationship with Lady Luck. She smiles on me often.
    Usually, it's with derision.
