Game Update 1.6: Cartel Market Additions

Game Update 1.6: Ancient Hypergate is now on live servers and with it comes a new assortment of items for the Cartel Market. In order to show the community at large the items, we created this post to serve as a listing for them. Initially, this post will only contain brief summaries with images due to time constraints. As the day progresses, we will make a list in entirety. As with new Cartel Packs, items may take a while to find for some but when we come across them, we will add them here. For the current items, hit the gallery below.

Wait a minute... Grade 7 ship items for CC?!?  I thought this is exactly what people raged about on the forums... the ole pay to play issue.  So, if I play with top parts pre 1.6 and get my ass kicked.. seems like I'll be strongly drawn to buy those upgrades via CC.  Isn't that pay to play?  How is that different than buying Dreadguard gear with CC?

While I am not really thrilled about the idea either, I don't think you can call it pay to win because you don't compete against other players in space combat, it is just a side game.

It is a slippery slope though and it does have me concerned.

Right.. Pay to Win is a better way of looking at it but you said "against other players".  You're not playing against other players in Operations either.

From what I've read most players would need the upgrades to effectively compete in the new missions.

So what?  If a person spends a bunch of money to play space missions, that is their choice.  Again space missions are a solo play mini game and have no bearing on the rest of the game nor do you play it with other players.  The whole point of playing the space missions is for your own enjoyment and to earn the ship parts to make it easier to do.  If you blow your wallet on it, then that player is just killing the challenge and really point of that minigame.  Good job, you bought high end ship gear and now it's trivial and pointless to play those space missions anymore.  Space missions are not even a good source of credits/coms as you get far more and faster doing dailies.

Also the player crafted ship parts added in this are better than these grade 7 parts, so any player with enough credits in game can just skip them already without "paying to win".

As long as they don't charge for endgame gear and pvp tier sets, few are going to really care or consider it pay to win.  Progression gear for endgame is what people are going to care about and what BW has to stay away from monetizing.

In addition, equal gear is available via in-game means, so the pay-to-win label doesn't really hold water here.

That being said, I'm in agreement that this does set a dangerous precedent in terms of future gear sales on the Cartel market.

So, Grade 7 isn't endgame gear?  Okay, can I get the last pieces of my Dreadguard set via CC?  Because I want them and it doesn't effect any other players.

There is competition in PvE.  You compete for first kills, you compete on the meters, and in some situations you compete for raid spots.

Space is just a side game, it is not the same thing.

I already said that I do not approve of this idea and I am worried that it is a stepping stone to worse things, but I still can't call it pay to win.  Yet.

And yes, they are necessary to do the new missions.  BUT you can get them all without spending a single coin.  I did, I got them all in game.

Space missions are a (complex) minigame.  Nobody gives a shit whether you're good or bad at space missions.

I will say that it is kind of neat but I agree that I am sad that there isn't an actual life day event which would be very cool so rather they just add items that if we want to celebrate life day and do fun stuff we have to buy.  I am somewhat upset but am imagining the EA is pushing BW to make more money and milk the cow, which is sad because I expected more.

BW is just digging their hole deeper...

kinda disappointing that grade 7 ship parts are in market, when full access to space missions is supposed to be a subscriber perk.

  • #3 Shadowlance

The items purchased in the ship parts packs are earnable simply by playing (for fleet comms).

  • #4 sensical0xymoron

Of course they are. I'm just pointing out that BW is disproportionately targeting subscribers with these items such that even though you're paying a sub, if you want the best parts for your ship right away, you have to buy CC. I'm sure you've seen the in-game prices for the items -- they require a rather long grind to acquire.

It also makes me inclined to see the new space missions not as an exciting/interesting challenge, but rather a simple ploy to make some extra $. Honestly, I'd rather not see new content in that light.

  • #11 PanzerKitten

Then don't buy them?  All this content we knew was in the works earlier in the year before the game went F2P, so how this was turned into a money making scheme is a pretty stretch.  And if you buy the ship components you are basically killing the point of playing the missions in the first place.  Why would you trivialize the new content buy spending real money to basically skip past it?  It's your choice if you spend money on taking out the challenge and point of content.  I'll be content playing through the content and earning my ship rewards without spending a dime.
