Game Update 1.6 introduced new Heroic Space Missions and Tier 7 ship parts to help players complete these challenging missions. The prices to obtain these new ship parts are hundreds of Daily and Fleet Commendations. To the surprise of many players, these parts were also made available for purchase on the Cartel Market. Players have discussed this approach and debated whether the large discreprancy in costs between the two ways of obtaining the items is truly a step towards "pay to win" for SWTOR. Community Manager Joveth Gonzalez has posted some feedback from Lead Systems Designer Damion Schubert indicating that BioWare is looking for solutions to reduce the gap between the two paths:
Unfortunately, there is, in fact, a great disparity between these two costs. We want to apologize for this, as there was a miscommunication internally on how valuable these upgrades were, how challenging they should be to earn, and how fast a player should be able to earn them.
We are currently looking at solutions that cause the least amount of frustration for all players affected, while keeping the integrity of both the Cartel Market and the game intact.
It is not our intent to make the Cartel Market the “way to play" the game—we want you to feel that both the Cartel Market and earning gear in game are viable options as far as value goes, neither being far more efficient or effective than the other.
We truly hope you enjoy the challenge of the new Heroic Space Missions and apologize again for what we hope is a small distraction.
I want to reiterate that we are actively looking at solutions and they will be communicated to you as soon as we have a solid plan.

Posted 12/17/2012 6:24:14 PMare the space missions fun? Yes
is the challenge to reward necessarily balanced? Not really. I think more reward would be good. IE actually repeatable daily 3 of the 6 missions.
Should space components be up for cartel coin purchase with no cooldown on resell? Not at all
I think the components should still come in the packs like they are now, offense, defense, and tactical, with a choice of purchase: 120 daily comms, or 80 fleet comms.
It took awhile to earn 240+ fleet comms from the existing missions. That would've been fair to upgrade for about that with all 3 packs. Currently the cost is over triple that in overall investment and you can only buy selected parts as standalone.
I don't buy the miscommunication bit. That's a spin on "we didn't realize that would cause this reaction to charge that much in game currency for the grade 7 progression"

Posted 12/17/2012 12:48:10 PMLets not forget that these P2W ship parts allow you to get BH comms. They should have made the grind for the parts less intense, or the CC items more expensive. As it is, I will probably buy the ship parts with my monthly sub allowance so I cn get the BH caomms. I think they knew exactly what they were doing by putting play to win parts in the least popular aspect of the game. They wanted to gauge the response to see what they could get away with. More and more this game is showing the influence of the "suits" at EA. These aren't the tactics of game developers to make a better game, these are tactics meant to squeeze money out of a product. I will probably stay subbed for a while. If I start to feel like people who pay have a distinct advantage over me, I'm done. The only reason I have stuck around this long is because I love Star Wars. I have never played any other MMO, and don't really have much interest in anything else that is out there.

Posted 12/14/2012 5:39:28 PMI just canceled my sub because of Damion Schubert's comment that the cartel market would become a viable way to get gear. I am hopeful that Joveth will come back to clarify his statement. If/when Bioware clarifies this statement to my satisfaction, I will happily resubscribe.

that highlighted words are what scare me.. i can tell you this. if they start putting P2W raiding and pvp items in the CM, im done with swtor. i bought the CE and still have time on my current 6 month sub. thus i will finish the content i payed for (the 8 stories). but after that.. unless they have a dramatic switch in philosophy, im done.

Posted 12/14/2012 11:33:49 AMEven the current line with putting cosmetic stuff in the cartel market bugs me. It seems to bug players too, given how everyone is mad that all the Life Day stuff was put on the Cartel Market instead of an event. Since freebies have to buy a license to wear Event Items, they still would've gotten their blood money out of giving everything out in an event. But no, everything from hereon out has to be on the cash shop for real money. Even subscribers have to buy the Life Day items instead of being given them free, so their monthly fee goes to nothing.

Posted 12/14/2012 8:16:41 AMPart of me wants to believe the dev's excuses but there is also my suspicious self that says he's lying.
It was their intention from the start to have those parts an inshop purchase along with a steep and grindy gameplay acquisition option. They knew that they could make some money out of it because of frustration and convenience. They cant force anyone that plays Space mission to buy from the shop but they ensured that if anyone wants to play them and avoid the long grinding they can milk them. There wasnt any miscommunication or if there is one then it is a bigger problem that they say it was.
If what Shubert states is true then they really have a serious communication problem, a design problem, an issue of vision. In other words they really do not completely comprehend what they are doing because in every single patch they create more reasons for players to be frustrated and every single time they come forth late to save what can be saved. They are not doing it right from the start. Hell, in every single patch the only sure thing that will happen is the expansion of the Known Issues list.
This post also does open a P2W intention on behalf of the devs so, sadly, i m expecting more items to be added to the shop as an easy method of getting them using the usual lame excuses for doing this. I only hope they keep the shop selling only fluff items, which is ok by me and the majority of players, imho.
Let this be the last time they ll anger their fans and may this be the beginning of certain actions in order to build and maintain a positive mood on their troubled and frustrated but loyal Star Wars community.
Edit Notes: Edited spacing at bottom.

Posted 12/14/2012 2:43:02 AMI hope that BW learn from this "political sh*tstorm" that resulted from this most unfortunate move (and it is a good thing that it happened).
While I agree that Space Parts do not matter much, as it is a part of the game that is not widely played (most people I have seen in "space" location were 10 shortly after launch), it is a troubling thing to see items with stats on Cartel Market.

Posted 12/14/2012 1:31:05 PMThe parts don't matter yet. If and when the SSSP sees the light of day, then it'll matter. If the main forums were any indication, EA just saw a large wave of people unsubscribing over this move. Hopefully this will be the last attempt to put P2W items in the Cartel Market.
Honestly if the clothes on the CM were Level1 empty shells for 300-600 points, I'd be all over the Outlaw set.

Posted 12/14/2012 1:34:51 PMYeah, but before SSSP sees the light of day, I am sure we will be treated to at least 1 more tier of ship upgrades.
And since nobody knows what is the SSSP, it is premature to judge (it could just be co-op 3D flight, not PvP)

Posted 12/13/2012 10:18:51 PMNot pick knits but if that is the case in what he is saying, why can't we earn Life Day items in game...
If 1.6 is the hallmark of things to come, my optimsm for this game has finally and truly been killed at this point. This is sort just the straw that broke the camels back for me personally.

Posted 12/13/2012 8:38:47 PMThe issue with the parts being on the cartel market and the disparity in their in game and cartel costs was the final straw for me, blaming this on a "miscommunication" is icing these devs have had 12 months to get their act together on stupid moves like this and they continually have made bone had mistake after bone head mistake, so much promise this game had, squandared by incompetence and blatant money grabing

Posted 12/13/2012 3:59:39 PMWhat I'm still confused about is that Mr. Schubert seems to be addressing the problem as if the two "paths" to obtain the gear are unbalanced, when really one shouldn't exist at all.
Say what you will about the importance of the space mini-game, but at the end of the day the grade 7 ship parts have STATS: numbers the dictate the effectiveness of the piece. When you are paying real world money for stat-ed parts, you are paying to win the game. In my opinion the same thing goes for the color crystals.
Don't even get me started on the fact that after being purchased, these ship parts can be sold on the GTN, creating a THIRD, easier path to obtaining them.

Posted 12/13/2012 2:46:25 PMI hate to say it, but they really messed up this time. I do not like pay 2 win. First they did it with the color crystals and now ship parts? There apears to be no line in the sand. :(
