Pre-Order Rise of the Hutt Cartel Expansion Today

This morning, visitors to the Star Wars: The Old Republic Official Website found a new addition to the swtor.com/buy page, most notably, a pre-order section for the new expansion -- Rise of the Hutt Cartel. The page reveals details regarding price, content, and how to pre-order. For those that do not care to visit it themselves, here is what you need to know.

  • Coming in Spring 2013
  • Subscribers can buy the expansion for 50% off the regular price off $19.99 making it $9.99.
  • Preordering entitles you to Five days of Early Access if pre-ordered by January 7, 2013 11:59PM CT / 5:59AM GMT
  • Increased level cap by five levels to a total of 55 which include new story based missions
  • Includes story on the Hutt Cartel and the new planet Makeb

Included on the page is a new FAQ about the new expansion. In it, there is a pretty lengthy description of what players can expect.

Face off against a frightening new enemy on the brand new planet of Makeb as you battle the nefarious Hutt Cartel and its massive new creatures and weapons of destruction. The Hutt Cartel has emerged from the shadows to challenge the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire for control, unleashing never-before-seen Droids and monstrous battle stations to serve as powerful weapons of destruction. As a player, you will be forced to take a side as you earn new weapons, armor, abilities and more.

To pre-order the new expansion, head over to the announcement page.

At this point the expansion is 50% cheaper than the ridiculous holiday speeder. Think about that.

Everyone is always saying how the game is dying. I'm sitting there on the fleet with upwards of 250 people just thinking; this is dying? lol

Dying is relative. For example from the birth of anything it is dying if it has an 'expiration' date. However normally when something is 'dying' it means its not doing well and close to not existing.

Anyone who is a finance guy, and knows how much it costs to run swtor and develop can tell you if it is dying or not and how much cash they need and how much cash they make in comparison.

And even so, if they make more than they spend, it does not mean the game is going to succeed by that alone, it also depends on what they develop. So there are unknowns in risk assessment of the market and development other than numbers. And I believe the beginning of swtor development was geared towards a market that would not sustain swtor too well with a p2p model that was mostly story since that is what single player games are, and they are not p2p. So the difference of swtor being an MMO compared to a single player game was not enough for a p2p model for the market.

good to see subs get 50% discount. this will prob increase the amount of sub

is your are f2p you best sub for a month preorder rise of the hutcartel becouse the discount is 2/3 of the monthly subprice

Subscribers can buy the expansion for 50% off the regular price off $19.99 making it $9.99

Subs cost 15$. They pay for a sub, and then pay for the content. $15+10 = 25

    Or preferred / f2p only pay 20$.

The perks of extra cartel coins, preferred status, or the 1 month p2p status are also worthy and worth consideration as well... but its relative to the consumer hence the 'flexible' pricing model.

  • #15 sepulhead

so you get a month sub for $ 5. you get 2 weekly unlocks for that monney

  • #16 DarthSerious

Yea. the perks are good. I am not denying that. However its up to the consumer to see that since the price difference is obvious but the perks are not, unless they experienced them. But you are talking about f2p players as well.

Also the whole point of flexible pricing is people play at their leisure. Some people prefer to play a weeks amount of swtor, so 5 bucks a month is a good deal. But 5 dollars more, and the expansion is a good deal as well which as the previous example is the same thing to them but they get to try p2p model.

You worded it strangely at first, and I was just showing the math.

I'm wondering if you will be able to buy this with Cartel coins and if its 10 bucks then what? 1000 to 1200 cartel coins then? If that's the case then I just have to save 2 months of the 600 cartel coins I get a month and Walaa! free expansion

  • #27 DarthSerious

Good point. Another perk is the prelaunch release with early purchase. Which could be a big deal considering it can also have a good population for certain rares/bosses compared to a larger group fighting over the boss/rares after pre-release.

Unfortunately they've flat out said in their FAQ that you will not be able to purchase this with cartel coins.

I have a question about this.. will this come with new tier 2 flash points ?

  • #8 KingofGob

They had mentioned a while back that they were working on a way to scale up all the current operations and flashpoints so  that they don't get obsoleted by a level increase.  I would guess this would have to come with at least one new flash point.

  • #6 KingofGob

They should tack on 10$ worth of cartel coins to make paying for it a little more friendly.  That's essentially free for them to do and it helps drive cartel market purchases.

  • #10 DarthSerious

The problem is that they release their content in small patches and then the large content. So putting a specific value on an expansion should also consider the other content.

And paying 10$ is a good deal without even knowing how much content is actually being released. If its more story at the same quality ...its worth 10 more dollars.

I wish they treated their game with larger expansions but had more filler content for the wait. For example pvp tournaments, solo rank for pvp, mini games, duel arenas, player bounties, guild mechanics, sieging, NPC alignment and resource collecting etc

Then they could charge for larger content and make us wait longer but be glad when the expansion hits. I think it has more stronger impact to draw back subscribers when they see that the expansion has 2 new WZs, 2 New ops, 3 new FPS, more story, one more planet, one more race etc... since that is what the expansion will be if they released all the content at once since release date.

Well, at the end a few bucks here and there wont make a difference as long as the content is coming.. but really... when is the filler content that keeps us preoccupied coming? Im not sure about others, but I thought there are people like me, who wanted lots of horizontal progression for the end game... I hope things like those are important for swtor, and the devs and players both want it... or I might have to be a less active supporter of swtor until the content such as story comes once a year or whatever may be the case. And I believe adding more horizontal activities adds to retention and just like them 'scaling' FPs for end game... horizontal progression will be re-playable and wont bother anyone with any scaling since it is its own system that may start at early lvls or at end game. And that actually to me is a big deal since I am seriously tired of gear grinds and want some alternatives and pazaak for example is a good one... or maybe a mini game that does not have gear grinds for pvp/duel arenas... or even large scale pvp might be less dependent on individuals and therefore I wont notice the difference in gear...
