One concern of mine is that amongst the Jedi AC's, only "Wizard" stands out. All the others: Shadow, Guardian, Sentinel, are actual roles/titles in the Jedi Order. One must wonder why on Earth they went with this.
Aside from the ludicrous name, what are your thoughts on this Advanced Class? We know from comments at Gamescon and Comic Con that the Wizard AC will involve the single saber, healing and Telekinetics, essentially combining the Yoda playstyle with the option for a support role.
My question is how dynamic will this subclass really be? Will we be able to focus entirely on TK and be more of an offensive character, or are we always going to be relegated to a support role?
I'm jazzed about this AC. I'm imagining heavy crowd control ability - Force Slam one baddie, Force Push another, trap a third in a Force Whirlwind, and then throw a heal while you slice a fourth with your lightsaber. Sounds pretty darn heroic to me. I can't wait!
I hate the name, but the way I'm imagining it, it'll be loads of fun and likely a change of pace, since it'll be control-oriented instead of "blow everything up!"-oriented like a trooper, or "slice everyone in two"-oriented like a Jedi Knight.
I expect the Wizard to get pegged as the healer more often than not, depending on how the Scoundrel's Medicine tree pans out. Then again, we can't forget about companions taking over healing duty to some degree.
My biggest worry is the versatility of the Advanced Classes, and whether they're genuinely capable of performing more than one role. From the sound of it, the Guardian, for example, is a tank and nothing more. It seems kind of a waste to make AC's permanent if they can do only one thing.
We know the Scoundrel and (sigh) Wizard are capable of stealth/healing, and TK/healing respectively, but will those really be two full paths? It may be that the Scoundrel's main focus is stealth fighting with *some* healing and the Wizard is focused on healing and *some* TK. Seems like a terrible design choice, if this is the case. Hopefully, at least with the more support oriented characters (Smuggler/IA/Inquisitor/Consular), there's more hybridization than that. It really does seem like a waste of skill sets otherwise.

I think Bioware is just emphasizing the main role an AC will be expected to fill, not that Guardians, given the example, can tank and only tank. It's as if Wizards could heal and only heal. Are they going to heal mobs to death or going to rely on non-upgradeable skills? I doubt it.
Devoting two trees in an AC for different flavors of healing or tanking will not happen. What do I see happening? This:
Wizard: Tree 1: Healing Tree 2: DPS
What's the main theme of the class? Healing, so that's what they are going to make as the poster child for the AC.
JC got the shaft when if comes to the name. WIZARD?! WIZARD?! Truly I dont care if they called obi-wan a wizard in the IV film its, a disgrace to an amazing project.
It's interesting that both trees have healing capabilities. Since there is no mention of healing with the Shadow, I guess that knocks it off the shared tree.
Now I want to get my hands on a Wizard and compare the healing style to a Scoundrel. The resource dynamics should be interesting.
Edit - Belay that first bit. Rereading the description leads me to think that there will be a healing tree and a DPS tree.
Yeah, I don't think they're describing specific trees so much as central elements to the Advanced Class. The breakdown for Wizard will probably be TK vs. Healing, and the Scoundrel will be Stealth vs. Healing.
Oh yeah, let's have a nerd war, we star wars nerds (spending hours a week talking about a game that hasn't been released) are soooo superior to the LARP nerds. It's just a name, it's a descriptive name that says precisely what the class does in the game. Okay it's not super star-warsy, it's a new addition to the universe and it has some unhappy connotations in popular culture. But the fact remains that it characterises what the class does and it's probably barely going to be mentioned within the game (you will be defined by your class not your AC). So could we possibly save the criticism of the name for the SWTOR forum, where it might get noticed (and therefore might result in it being changed) and instead get down to some speculation about mechanics, story and end-game viability.

Posted 8/19/2010 6:04:44 PMThe name may seriously keep me from playing the class entirely.
edit -- perhaps this is Bio's way of keeping the Jedi classes from being oversubscribed?
