After thinking on it some, I started to wonder about the Vanguard's DPS tree as described by BioWare: -Vanguard (Roles: Close - Mid Range Damage Dealing, Ranged Tanking)
Close - Mid Range doesn't sound much like a traditional battle rifle (mostly because it's point blank), but then I started thinking: 'What if they used Carbines instead?'
We already know that the Operative, the IA Advanced class has access to Blaster Carbines, so why not let them serve double duty as a Vanguard weapon as well? This would account for the Close - Mid Range dilemma, as Carbines are very inaccurate weapons at long distances, as well as feel very trooper-like, due to their use in The Clone Wars EU by Clone Troopers.
Thoughts and comments below, as well as your ideas about Vanguard DPS as well.
I think I remember seeing it early on, either when they revealed the Imperial Agent, or some time after, though I may be a bit mistaken. I think it's more likely that we will see carbines, but not as an official weapon set, like blasters or lightsabers. It'll most likely be a subset of Blaster Rifles, but if you take a look at a lot of the media surrounding the Operative, the blaster rifles don't seem to be as long as the ones in the movies, or on the newly released Trooper Prog video.
Most likely culprit as to why I thought this way: I might have some kind of undiagnosed Psychosomatic disorder that makes me see things. Although it would be a cool look for the Vanguard and Operative....
Vanguards will use blaster rifles, and judging by the 3 models of chaingun we saw in the armor progression video, chainguns will be the equippable weapon of choice for Commandos.
I think they'll be using grenades and blaster rifle primarily.
Theoretically, the blaster rifle should be fine at long range, but it's a game play thing.
As a whole though, I believe the DPS Vanguard will be less of a straight damage dealer and more of a buffer/controller. Nothing I have really seen gives me this impression. That's just the way I feel for some reason.

That's exactly what I'm hoping the Vanguard will play out as! In the stage demo's that I played it hasn't really pointed out to it that way. If anything he was a CC/AE high damage dealing tank, but a level 14 or 15 doesn't exactly represent how the character will be end game which is what really matters.
As far as I can tell, a Vanguard DPS just suck overall. I much prefer the tanking aspect of the whole thing. He/she does just enough damage to be helpful in PVP and in Huttball can take the beating of a lifetime and still stay up long enough to deliver the goods, but asking a Vanguard to pick the right weapon and do DPS is just wrong. Also, with the healing companion you get on Tyrus (think I spelled that right) you can kill anything in the world. It will take a hell of a long time, but otherwise use your cool downs correctly and just enjoy the fact that it takes a hell of a long time to kill you. PVP rules!!! Long live the Vanguards!!!
My Vanguard is a god in Huttball, but not from direct damage. I rack up a bunch of kills just with a combination of standing by an acid pool/fire trap, harpooning a foe to me into the acid/fire, and adding a bonus Cryo Grenade to ensure they stay in it until they die. The game is unlikely to register the damage as being directly mine, but it does kill the foes through my actions.
This is a Vanguard DPS spec that Im doing.. my trooper is currently only 24 but has no problems taking the damage and killing with little effort. the Spec relies on Dots and HIB for damage output and as such bypasses the assault plastique in favor of Gut
