We know both the names of the Advanced Class we don't really know much about them except for whats found here . I personally haven't seen ranged tanking before in an MMO, if any of you Haters have please post about it, so as an old tanker myself I'm curious as to how that would work and looking forward to trying it out.
Also will both be able to CC effectively or will one go another route. Please provide your input as to which you'd rather play and why.
Pesonally i'm going to go Merc, I leveled cap with my Prot Pally and really want a change of pace. Plus I love the idea of dual blaster pistols. Laying down a pattern of blaster fire and using missiles with my Death from above skill sounds Epic. Though the Powertech Class has shields that remind me of SWG's BH class that appeals to me a lot i just don't think it will be as fun.
Powertech Flamethrower Defense / Energy Shields Tank Mercenary Dual Wield Guns Missiles Ranged DPS
This is from the Swtor forums and shows (at least to me) that the Powertech class will have an edge in CC but I doubt that either will be bad at it.
As a swg vet of 6 years, I've player bounty hunter for the most part, (my main) and dark jedi as an alt. Over the years I've tried every class out more than a few times, and yes they have a ranged tank "commando". Some classes in swg can be spec'd toward tank or dps, but others can not. With evolution of swg, one thing has been constant for me over the years. That has been the player bounty system. Even when things had grown stale and content was lacking, there was the player bounty system. I my personal opinion, the system is new content every time you play it. No two bounties are ever the same. While I rant about the player bounty system, it did have its down falls at times. Those down falls were only because of the unbalance between classes. I plan on playing a dps bounty hunter(mercenary). If we do end up getting a player bounty system, it is from past experience that I have made quick kills by rushing in unexpectedly with heavy dps before my target knows what has happened. The same goes for pvp, hit and run tactics have been very good over the years as well as ranged support. Depending how many character slots we are allowed to have, I may even roll a power tech as well. Just to see the difference.
Actually thats what I'm basing my hopes on this class from, out of all the classes I played in SWG BH was my favorite to play, for several reasons. 1: Player Vounties made sure I was never bored, there was always something new. 2: They weren't the most OP class out there so you really needed to know what you were doing to make it. 3: I was able to live out my little fantasy of being a BA BH. So i agree that ill prolly go Merc for the same reason. Dps won me a lot of fights even against some of the better Jedi which truly game me a Heroic feeling afterwards...
Though there were the times i Ganked people coming out of shuttles......... But we dont talk about those times..... Openly......
In some of the more recent videos, they've shown the need for multiple tanks and ping ponging solo mobs back and forth between tanks. Since all classes have close range and long range attacks, this should work out fine. So I wouldn't be worried. Plus the BH uses pistols, which is a close range weapon anyway, even if it does have long range than a melee weapon.
I'm thinking the Advanced Prototype AC is going to be a fairly good counter to Jedi Knight, if not a hard counter. What do JK's like to do? get in your grill and swing like mad. Well, if the AP BH has some good melee range abilitys, he'd have the JK right where he wants. From BioWare's AC page, there's a few talents that come up: Meltdown. 20% chance on Wrist Blade and Immolate Shot to make your next flamethrower tick at double time. Then stuff that resets Rail Shot, Missiles have no dead zone (that I could find). Then there's one up in the AP tree that lets you move or rotate while casting Flamethrower.
Now where does the Jedi want to be? With his mommy.
