Just recently picked up a new cpu for my computer. Was running with a intel e6500 dual core (which ran swtor, but not all that well) and just bought a core 2 quad q9550. According to intels website my motherboard is compatable with that cpu, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01324212&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3752855, however when I install the new cpu the computer will turn on, but won't make it to the desktop without just completely shutting down on it's own. What am I missing?
I put the old CPU back in to make sure and that is running just fine. I checked for any bios updates and I already have the recent update. I am running on windows 7 64 bit. The fan that came with it is one of those fans that click into place and doesn't screw in. I've tried playing with it a few times to make sure I had it in right and it seems to be plugged in all the way. Yet each time I try I can't get to the desktop. It keeps shutting down right after I log in.
Looks like it was the cooler. I picked up the thermaltake slimx3 (had to remove the motherboard to install it which was a pain in the ass for my computer) and now everything is working just fine. Thanks for all the help guys.

Posted 12/22/2011 2:03:05 AMYou might have had to apply a BIOS update before switching to the newer CPU.

Posted 12/22/2011 2:37:00 AMmy guess is your cpu is not being cooled properly which means you either couldnt set the fan to its place or forgot to plug its cable

Posted 12/23/2011 12:33:09 PMTry an aftermarket cooler with screws? Hyper 212+ or the like.
You can keep it for your next build too. ;)
